14.The Rise of a Young Scientist
Hannah Herbst,a 15-year-old teenager from Florida,US,has just become America's Top Young Scientist.She was given this award (獎(jiǎng)賞)for her invention which turns ocean (海洋) energy into electricity for the developing world.
In fact,Hannah was just a middle school student before that.She came up with this idea because of a letter from Africa.Shortly after the school began in 2014,she received a letter from her 9-year-old pen friend,Rose,in Africa.In the letter,she told Hannah that her family didn't have enough fresh water or electricity.Hannah realized that Rose's situation was bad and in some developing countries some people were in the same situation.She really wanted to help them,so she decided to do something useful.
Hannah began to work on her invention called"BEACON"to produce electricity from ocean power.Luckily, her idea won the attention of Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. She got the opportunity to work with a scientist to improve her invention. Thanks to this project, she won a prize of 25,000•She offered to donate (捐贈(zèng))half of the prize to people in need of energy in developing countries and planned to keep working on BEACON to improve the real life situation.
Bill Goodwyn, the CEO of Discovery Education said,"It is always encouraging to see young people like Hannah use their skills to solve real problems and make changes for the better life of people."Millions of American students have a"scientist dream",but Hannah was the few ones who could realize their goals. She wrote in her blog (博客),"It was so great to see my ideas come to life.I knew that it was hard to begin with, but I kept working and never gave up.After successfully creating BEACON,my love for science was discovered.I hope others will find their interests and make their dreams come true.

2.A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lessons perform better on exams than those who use laptops.[筆記本電腦]
Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility(清晰度).But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and use what they have been taught.
Researchers performed experiments to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency (趨勢(shì))to make notes"mindlessly"by taking down word for word what the teachers said
In the first experiment,students were given either a laptop or pen and paper.They listened to the same lesson and were told to use their usual note-taking skills.Thirty minutes after the talk,they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood what the teacher taught.
The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand.However,the laptop users performed worse at remembering and using the ideas.Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.
The researchers'report said,"While more notes are beneficial(有益的),if the notes are taken mindlessly,as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears."
In another experiment was done to test long-term memory,students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lesson.This time,the students who wrote notes by hand performed much better on the exam.
These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate(即時(shí)) learning and understanding, but that they also lead to better revision in the future.
31.More and more students prefer to use laptops for note-taking because they canD.
