A. gives(一般現(xiàn)在時,主動語態(tài));B. gave(一般過去時,主動語態(tài)); C. has given(現(xiàn)在完成時,主動語態(tài)); D. was given(一般過去時,被動語態(tài));主語it是動作的承受著(被給),指代上文提到的昂貴的鉆戒,文章的時態(tài)是一般過去時,由此推斷空格填一般過去時、被動語態(tài),故選D。

A. which(關(guān)系代詞,先行詞是物); B. who(關(guān)系代詞,先行詞是人);C. when(關(guān)系副詞,先行詞指時間);D. where(關(guān)系副詞,先行詞指地點);分析句子成分,判斷空格是定語從句的關(guān)系詞,空格前diamond指物,所以關(guān)系代詞用which,故選A

A. look(原形);B. looked(一般過去式);C. to look(不定式);D. looking(動名詞);根據(jù)上文“I was really worried我真的很著急,從文字表層意思推斷此處表達是回頭去尋找鉆戒,空格當句子目的狀語,所以動詞用不定式;故選C

A. fix(原形);B. fixed ();C. was fixing(過去進行時); D. have fixed(現(xiàn)在完成時);根據(jù)下文“I ran into an old gentleman by accident我意外地撞到了一位老人.”,推斷是由于當時正專注地在地面上尋找鉆戒,所以意外地撞到一個老人,判斷空格用過去進行時,故選C。

A. kind(和藹的,形容詞);B. kindly(和藹地,副詞);C. kindness(和藹,名詞);D. kinder(比較和藹,形容詞比較級);根據(jù)下文“"Don’t worry," he said.”,可知在老人被撞后,他還安慰我別著急,由此推斷上文老人是“和藹地說”,故選B。

A. something(某物); B. anything(任何東西);C. nothing(沒有東西 );D. everything(每件事、物);根據(jù)上文可知我在走路時發(fā)現(xiàn)昂貴的鉆戒丟了,推斷此處是向老人解釋“丟了重要的東西,故選A

A. keep(一般現(xiàn)在時);B. kept(一般過去式);C. was keeping(過去進行時);D. will keep(一般將來時);從情節(jié)的發(fā)展推斷,“keep my eyes open on it” 是老人安慰我他會留心,動作還未發(fā)生,所以用一般將來時,故選D。

A. what I saw(一般過去時,語序正確);B. what did I see(一般過去時,語序錯誤);C. what I see(一般現(xiàn)在時,語序正確);D. what do I see(一般現(xiàn)在時,語序錯誤);根據(jù)賓語從句主過從必過的原則,主句“I couldn't believe” 是一般過去時,判斷從句是一般過去式,所以排除CD;從句要按照陳述句的語序,所以B表達錯誤,故選A

A. to(去……,表動作的方向);B. for(為、給……,表原因);C. with(和……

A. many(很多的修飾可數(shù)名詞,形容詞原級); B. much(很多的修飾不可數(shù)名詞);C. more(更多的,比較級);D. most(最多的,最高級);根據(jù)“than before.”

Have you ever had trouble sleeping in a new place?

Lots of people do. And now researchers from Brown University in Rhode Island think they know why. They found that one-half of the brain “remains more awake” than the other half when people are trying to sleep in a new place.

This appears a case of the brain keeping people ready for trouble in a new place, the researchers said.

The sleep findings were reported in Current Biology by Brown University. In their report, the researchers said many people report they have a harder time sleeping the first night at a hotel or other places outside their home. They call it “first-night influence”. “In Japan they say, ‘If you change your pillow, you can’t sleep,’” said Yuka Sasaki, one of the report’s writers, “You don’t sleep very well in a new place. We all know about it.”

The researchers measured brain waves(測量腦波) for 35 volunteers over two nights in a laboratory. The two nights were a week apart. They found during the first night the left half of the brain was more active than the right half. This was during the first deep-sleep period, the researchers said.

Sasaki said a lot of questions remain.

Researchers did not keep measuring brain waves all night long. So, they don’t know if the left half keeps “watch” all night. Or whether it “works in shifts” with the right half later in the night. They also don’t know why the brain activity, at least during the first period of deep sleep, is always on the left half.

For some, this research may be calming. It is good to know that our brain is “l(fā)ooking out for us” in a new place. But it may not help with sleep. That brain activity, at least according to this new research, makes it harder to get the sleep people need to wake up well rested in the morning.

1What did the research find during the first deep-sleep period?

A.They found the brain wave remained the same.

B.They found the brain activity helped with sleep.

C.They found the right half of the brain kept “watch”.

D.They found the left half of the brain was more active.

2Which of the following is one of the questions that remain?

A.Whether the new bed keeps you from sleeping.

B.How you have trouble sleeping in a new place.

C.Why the brain activity is always on the left half.

D.What people can do when they can’t sleep well.

3The underlined word “calming” has the closest meaning to ______.

A.pleasingB.differentC.seriousD.strange

4What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 7 refer to?

A.The brain wave.

B.The brain activity.

C.The whole brain.

D.The left half of the brain.

Is sleep important for children? A new study says yes.

In America, most people don't get enough sleep. Children aged 5 to 12 are advised to sleep 10 to 11 hours every night, but most of them can't sleep that long. A study found that about 41 million American workers got less than six hours of sleep every night. Scientists worry that parents are passing their poor sleeping habits down to their children.

In the study, Reut Gruber and some other scientists either added or reduced(減少) one hour of sleep for healthy children aged 7 to 11. They watched the children for five nights. They wanted to know if the amount of sleep can affect(影響) a child's behavior.

Before the study began, students were asked to sleep the same amount of hours as usual. Their teachers were asked to record their behavior. After changing the children's sleep for five nights, the teachers had to record again. According to the two records, scientists found that those who slept one hour less behaved worse than those who slept one hour more. Students with less sleep were more likely(可能的) to feel sad and had more problems paying attention.

The scientists chose to study children in their homes instead of in a laboratory, because they wanted to find out how everyday changes might affect children's behavior at school. "In the study, nobody became a talent, and nobody became crazy. But small changes in children can really make a big difference," says Gruber.

1According to scientists, what may cause children to sleep less?

2Why did scientists do the new study?

5Was the study done in a laboratory?
