To me, life would be boring without music. I realize that it is not true for everybody. Many people get along quite well without going to the concerts, and listening to the CDs. But music plays an important part in everyone’s life, whether he realizes it or not. Try to imagine, for example, what films or TV plays would be like without music. Would the feeling, the moving story, and the greatest interests, be so exciting? I’m not sure about it.
Now, we have been speaking of music in its more common meaning- the kind of music we hear in the concert hall. But if we look at some parts of music more closely, we discover them in our everyday life, too-in the sound of the sea, the singing of a bird in the woods and so on. So music surely has meaning for everyone. And, of course, it has special meaning for those who have spent all their lives working on playing or writing music.
It is well side, “Through music a child enters into a world of beauty, expresses himself from his heart, feels the joy of doing things alone, learns to take care of others, develops his mind and makes his body strong.”
1.Music is very important in my life.
2.Some people don’t realize the importance of music.
3.Music can’t be found everywhere in everyday life.
4.Music has meaning, especially for musicians.
5.The writer talked mainly about the development of music.

“What’s the name of the supermarket? I can’t remember right now.” Have you ever heard your grandparents ask questions like this sometimes? Usually, we think that older people’s memory becomes had because their brains get weak. But now a team of scientists at the University of Tubingen in Germany has a new idea. “The human brain works slower in old age,” says Michael Ramscar, the team’s lead scientist, “only because it has stored more information over time.” The findings are based on a series of computer tests related to learning and memory.
Scientists had the computers read a certain amount of words and learn new things each day. When the computer “read” a small amount of data(數(shù)據(jù)),its performance on cognitive(認(rèn)知)tests was similar to that of a young adult . But if the computer took in larger amounts of data, its performance was similar to that of an older adult. Often it was slower, but not because its processing ability had dropped. Rather, increased “experience” had caused the computer’s database to grow, giving it more data to process-which takes more time. This is similar to how old people process information.
Imagine that one person knows just two people’s birthdays and can get them right each time he or she is asked. Another person knows the birthdays of 2,000 people , but can only match the right person to the right birthday 9 times out of 10. Can you say the first person has a better memory than the second person?
“The larger the library you have in your head , the longer it usually takes to find a particular word,” Benedict Carey, a science reporter for The New York Times, wrote in an article about the study.

How do you feel when you teacher asks you to work on a group project with other student? Do you like to work together with others or work alone?
The Programme for International Student Assessment, or PISA, carried out a survey of student's ability to work together in groups. They found that students who do well on tests by themselves are also likely to be better at working with other people. This finding was true for many countries. Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, where test scores are high, also did well in working together to solve problems.
But this was not the case for every country. Chinese students, who have high scores as well, displayed just average collaborative (合作的)skills. "One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers focus too much on grades," said Zhao Zhongxin, former vice president of the Chinese Family Education Association. "Students have a lot of exam pressure and they see schools as places for competition." "However, collaborative skills are very important for preparing students for today's society." he added. "Luckily, more Chinese parents and teachers are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students improve this skill."
Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls can be better than boys at working together. They said girls show more positive attitudes (態(tài)度)to wards relationships, which means they are more willing to listen to other' opinions.
PISA also found that the classroom environment can influence how well students collaborate. In classes where there are a lot of activities that require communication such as class debates, students might have better attitudes towards collaborating.
1.The PISA did the survey to find out the students' ability to____________.
A.work with other people B.get high scores on tests
C.solve difficult problems D.make plans for projects
2.What can we know from the findings of the survey?
A.Boys are better at working with others than girls.
B.Students who do well on tests are worse at working with others.
C.Collaborative skills are less important than scores for students' futures.
D.The classroom environment can influence students' ability to work together.
3.What do Chinese teachers and parents think of working together now?
A.They like it a lot.
B.They can't stand it.
C.They think it's important.
D.They think it's unnecessary
4.What can be done to improve students' ability to work together according to the passage?
A.Giving students high scores on every test.
B.Helping students to get used to exam pressure.
C.Making girls work with girls rather than boys.
D.Arranging more communicative activities in class.
5.What's the passage mainly about?
A.The popularity of PISA across the world.
B.Chinese students' ability to work with others.
C.The findings of a survey about working together.
D.The difference between boys and girls in working together.
