An example of VR technology
Have you ever wanted to sing on stage with Taylor Swift, or go to Mars? With the rise of virtual reality (虛擬現(xiàn)實), you might be able to do these things without even leaving your home. Unlike real reality, virtual reality means completely imaginary worlds, using high-performance computers and special glasses and gloves.
Virtual Reality (VR) has been with us for many years – at least as an idea. Although it’s hard to tell the father of this amazing technology, history suggests that it could have been the fruit of not one but five key people. First, Morton Heilig introduced users to 3D films. Then, there’s Jaron Lanier, the first person to use the term “Visual Reality”. Douglas Engelbart invented the computer mouse. Ivan Sutherland is the inventor of the first HMD and Myron Krueger, the audio wiz. Thanks to these inventors, the technology has now come of age. Users can virtually experience things they could only dream of. Virtual reality is changing the way we communicate experiences in the same way the Internet has changed the way we communicate information. Indeed, VR has become a worldwide reality, with different types of applications ( 應(yīng) 用 ) from computer games to medicine, engineering, scientific research, and so on. For example, medical learners are able to train through VR in order to deal with all kinds of injuries. Designers can check every corner of their buildings and make preparations. And if you are heading to Mars, a trip in virtual reality can help you “see” what you will find before you get there.
One recent example was a doctor who practiced an operation on a little baby’s heart. This enabled him to plan out his surgery ahead of time, and helped to save the baby.
VR will make the world even smaller than it is now. It’s definitely going to bring us closer together. Like any technology, however, virtual reality has its negative effects. The first big danger is disconnection from the real world. Apart from this, too much use of VR equipment can create obvious physical and even mental (精神的) dangers. Loss of one’s sense of direction and position, sea sickness and headaches are among the signs of illness some experience after using virtual-reality equipment for long periods.
This is an ongoing topic that people are arguing about.

“The only thing holding you back is yourself. Never say never”, said a rising 17-year-old singer, Justin Bieber, who was just an ordinary boy in Canada a few years ago.
After the accident of falling from the 18th floor and lying in the snow for three hours, my hands were frozen and my spinal cord(脊髓) was seriously injured. All the doctors and professors in the famous hospitals in Beijing told me that there was little chance for my hands and my body to recover(康復(fù)).
After half a year of medical treatments and recovering exercises, I could not make any more progress for over a year. What was worse, I suffered a lot from depression(絕望). On top of this, I suffered from insomnia, making every minute of the light seem to last forever. Hopelessly, mom and I came back to my hometown, which is small town in Guangdong.
At that time, I thought that I would never be able to walk again. I would never love and be loved. I would never be able to earn even a penny. I would never be able to repay the kindness I got from my parents and many nice people. Life was meaningless.
Now two years has passed. My hands are 80% recovered. I can even type faster than a healthy person! Up to now, I have worked for a law firm as an interpreter for half a year already. Although I don’t earn as much as before, I am able to pay for the food and clothes I need. What’s more, I even have extra money to buy thanksgiving presents for my parents and my boyfriend. Through my blogs(博客), many people get to know me and like me. I can bring happiness to them. I can help those who are still suffering from depression and the pain of illnesses by chatting with them…. You see, I am living a meaningful life and I am happier than ever I could have dreamed.
So, my friends, never say never. As long as you are alive, there is always hope and possibilities. It is never too late to take action to realize your dreams.

It’s nice to be invited to birthday parties, but sometimes you have to say no. How do you politely (禮貌地) refuse an invitation?
◆Send it in.
If you get a written (書面的) or e-mail invitation to a party, refusing politely is easy. All you have to do is to give a polite answer.
◆Ask for time to think.
Refusing a face-to-face invitation can be difficult. The polite way is to ask for time to check your calendar. Then, you have time to find a polite answer. Just make sure that if you’ve been invited in person (當(dāng)面), you’d better refuse it in person. It’s polite.
◆Be thankful.
Even if you have to refuse the invitation, thank him or her for the invitation all the same. If your only reason is a conflicting(相互沖突的) event, tell the host that you will come if the dates are different.
◆Be honest(誠實的).
This may be the most important thing in politely refusing an invitation. You wouldn’t want people to lie(說謊) to you, so it’s correct etiquette(禮節(jié)) to give an honest reason. Just say it in a polite way.
根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,判斷下列句子正誤。正確的用“A”表示,不正確的用“B”表示。
1.The writer gives us five pieces of advice.
2.We can refuse a face-to-face invitation by asking for time to check our calendar.
3.If an invitation conflicts with another event, you can tell the host that you will come if the dates are different.
