I had been a happy girl until one day when I was fifteen months old.One of my eyes was badly hurt in an accident.I lost the sight of the eye, with an ugly scar l * around it.
Children refused to play games with me.It made me very sad.I always walked ,looking at the floor ,so that people would not see the ugly face.My mother encouraged me to be brave. She told me,"Alice ,hold your head up high and face the world. If you do ,it will be OK ,and people will see your beautiful soul *."Mom's words meant different things to me over the years.

In high school,I worked hard at my lessons and succeeded in my studies.Everybody began to like me and I had some friends. However,I still felt sorry about my scar,my ugly face.Sometimes when things got really bad,I would cry to my mom.She was always there for me.She would look at me and said," Hold your head up high and face the world.Let them see the beauty that is inside."I became confident" .
At university,I took part in all kinds of activities.I joined a music club.We held concerts to raise money to help poor children. The club became so famous and I had more friends. Then John,a popular musician, came into my life.He didn't mind the scar.We soon fell in love with each other. Two years later,we got married.

Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. The building next door was only a few feet away from mine. There was a woman who lived there, whom I had never met, yet I could see her seated by her window each afternoon, sewing(縫紉)or reading.
After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, “I wonder why that woman doesn’t wash her window. It really looks terrible.”
One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including washing the window inside. Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was clearly visible(可見(jiàn)的). Her window was clean!
Then it dawned on me. I had been criticizing(批評(píng))her dirty window, but all the time I was watching hers through my own dirty window.
That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings(缺點(diǎn))? Since then, whenever I wanted to judge(評(píng)判)someone, I asked myself first, “Am I looking at him through my own dirty window?” Then I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the world about me more clearly.
