In New York City, every year on Thanksgiving Day? firemen cook turkey for a soup kitchen in 125th Street in Harlem. At the same time, many people give all kinds of food, fruits, meat, juice and so on to the soup kitchen.
A woman called Mary opened this soup kitchen for homeless people. Sixteen years ago,she found all the restaurants were closed during the Thanksgiving holidays ? so many homeless people had to live on the food which restaurants left in the rubbish bins. Mary decided to cook food for those poor people. People heard about Mary's story and many of them joined her team.
T his year,on Thanksgiving Day,I had a chance to do something for the soup kitchen. When I got there,I was surprised to find many homeless people standing in line, waiting for free food. I was even more surprised when I found there was lots of food there. Of course,it was given by kind people.
From noon to half past two,I was busy putting food into a white box. Every time when I was handing out the box to homeless people, everyone said “thank you” to me.
