When your doctor asks how often you exercise, do you give her an honest answer? How about when she asks what you’ve been eating lately? If you’ve ever stretched (夸大) the truth, you’re not alone.

Sixty to eighty percent of people surveyed have not told their doctors about some information that could be relevant (相關(guān)的) to their health, according to a new study. Besides fibbing (小謊) about diet and exercise, more than a third of respondents (受訪者) didn’t speak up when they disagreed with their doctor’s suggestions. More often than not, they fail to admit they didn’t understand their doctor’s instructions.

When respondents explained why they weren’t transparent (坦誠直言的), most said that they wanted to avoid being judged, and didn’t want to be lectured about how bad certain behaviors were. More than half were simply too embarrassed to tell the truth. Most people want their doctor to think highly of them, says the study’s senior author Angela Fagerlin, Ph. D.. “They re worried about being thought as someone who doesn’t make good decisions,” she adds.

Scientists at University of Utah led the research study together with colleagues at University of Michigan and University of Iowa. The results will be published online in JAMA Network Open on November 30, 2018.

Insights (深入了解; 洞察) into the doctor- patient relationship came from a national online survey of two populations. One survey got responses from 2,011 participants (參加者) who averaged 36 years old. The second included 2,499 participants who were 61 on average.

“I’m surprised that such a large number of people chose to withhold (隱瞞) relatively benign (相對無害) information, and that they would admit to it, says the study’s first author Andrea Gurmankin Levy, Ph. D.. The trouble with a patient’s dishonesty is that doctors can’t offer accurate medical advice when they don’t have all the facts. “If patients are withholding information about what they’re eating, or whether they are taking their medication, it can have influences for their health, especially if they have a chronic (慢性的) illness,” says Levy.

1What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Patients always lie to their doctors.

B. 60 to 80 percent of the patients can’t understand their doctor’s instructions.

C. Most respondents disliked being judge.

D. Fibbing can’t have bad influences for patients’ health.

2What does the underlined word it in the last paragraph refer to?

A. Relatively benign information.

B. Withholding relatively benign information.

C. A large number of people chose to withhold relatively benign information.

D. The trouble with a patient’s dishonesty.

3Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. There were 3 universities doing the research study together.

B. Over a third of respondents didn’t show their disagreement with their doctor’s suggestions.

C. Some patients often choose to tell fibs when facing doctors.

D. Levy believed most people want their doctor to think highly of them.

4What is the meaning of the word “accurate” in the last paragraph?

A. professionalB. effectiveC. availableD. exact

Patients always lie to their doctors病人總是向他們的醫(yī)生撒謊;B. 60 to 80 percent of the patients cant understand their doctors instructions 60%80%的病人無法理解醫(yī)生的醫(yī)囑;C. Most respondents disliked being judged大部分的調(diào)查對象不喜歡被批評;D. Fibbing cant have bad influences for patients health撒謊不可能對病人的健康有著惡劣的影響。由原文most said that they wanted to avoid being judged可知,大部分人想避免被醫(yī)生批評,與C項意思一致。

C. A large number of people chose to withhold relatively benign information許多人選擇隱瞞相對無害的信息;D. The trouble with a patients dishonesty病人的不誠實帶來的麻煩。由原句Im surprised that such a large number of people chose to withhold (隱瞞) relatively benign (相對無害) information, and that they would admit to it我很驚奇的是有如此多的人選擇隱瞞相對無害的信息而且他們也會承認這一點可知,it應(yīng)該是他們選擇隱瞞相對無害的信息。

There were 3 universities doing the research study together有三所大學一起做了這次研究調(diào)查;B. Over a third of respondents didnt show their disagreement with their doctors suggestions有三分一之一以上的調(diào)查者并沒有顯示他們對于醫(yī)生建議的不贊同;C. Some patients often choose to tell fibs when facing doctors一些病人面對醫(yī)生時,經(jīng)常會選擇撒個小謊;D. Levy believed most people want their doctor to think highly of them Levy相信,大部分人是想要他們的醫(yī)生對他們的高度認可。

The trouble with a patients dishonesty is that doctors cant offer accurate medical advice when they dont have all the facts病人的不誠實帶來的麻煩是:當醫(yī)生無法獲知所有的事實時,他們無法給出準確的醫(yī)學建議可知,D項代入意思吻合。

What is the meaning of the word accurate in the last paragraph?而根據(jù)后文提示when they dont have all the facts可知當醫(yī)生無法獲知所有的事實時,他們當然是無法給出準確的醫(yī)學建議。

In today's world of mobile phones, MP3 players and mini computers, most people have at least one time-telling tool with them. Since these small machines are so common, will people stop wearing the 500-year-old watches? According to some people, yes. A teenager says it's unnecessary to wear a watch. Many young people agree and use their mobile phones to tell time. Louis Galie, a president, said that fewer young people wear watches today than five years ago.

However, watchmakers say that watches get popular again when people reach their 20s and 30s. By then, they want to spend money on a nice time-telling tool which doesn't just keep good time. For this reason, the watch industry has become an accessory business(配件業(yè)) in recent years.

Today's watches offer a lot of uses that meet the need of almost any personality(個性). They can be used as compasses(指南針), calendars, and even USB drives...

People are always trying their best to create new kinds of watches. A certain watchmaker business makes watches that don't even look like watches. Their popular model uses different color lights to tell the time. Another watchmaker business, makes a “handless” watch, using a ring of circles to keep time. This watch makes people talk a lot about modern watches.

Whether a watch expresses fashion sense, creative ability or a love for sports, people want their time-telling tools to be beautiful, fashionable and practical. All in all, a watch has become more important than the time it tells.

It looks so good on you," said my friend. I was trying on a bathing suit. Then the topic of conversation turned to going on a diet(節(jié)食).

I wanted to become pretty and thin. So I decided to stick to the diet. I didn't eat my lunch. Some people asked me where my lunch was. I lied to them and made up excuses.

I did the same with breakfast. I tricked(欺騙) my dad into thinking that I ate my bread, but I fed it to the cat. My weight dropped fast, but when I looked at myself in the mirror, I still thought I was not thin enough.

Finally, dark circles formed under my eyes. I wore thick clothing in hot weather, but I was still cold. That didn't matter. I still needed to be thinner.

About a month after I bought the bathing suit, I tried it on again, and it fell right off me. My mother told me to look in the mirror. I could see my eye sockets(眼窩). That was the day I realized how skinny I was.

I went to see a doctor. My total weight loss was about twenty-five pounds in one month. It took one year for my body to start working normally again.

Sometimes I want to go back to being thin, but I will never do what I did again. It's not worth it. Please don't go on a diet when you're young. You will regret it. Don't judge and compare yourself with others. Try to love yourself for who you are, not for what you look like.
