My friends and I used to be a little afraid of the old house on the corner. It’s painted grey with plants almost as tall as the house. No one has lived there for years. Some of the older kids said a monster lived in the house.

One day when we were playing in the street, Sara hit the ball hard and it went towards the yard of the old house.

Sara was too scared to move. “Well,” I said. “Let’s go to get it.”

We jumped into the yard. I stayed near the wall, afraid to get close to the house. We searched and searched, but nothing turned up. All we found was rubbish of years. “We could,” said Mariana. “Er … we could go inside.”

The door of the house wasn’t locked. Half the windows were broken. Though it was light outside, it was dark inside. I felt foolish looking for a black ball in a completely dark room. Just then, we all heard a low, deep creak(咯吱聲) coming from the ceiling above.

“The monster!” cried Sara. We all held our breath. Then we heard the footsteps getting closer and closer. It was growling(咆哮). And … barking?

“Huh?” said Mariana.

It was actually a big dog, smiling with the ball in his mouth.

“You’re no monster at all!” we said. Mariana took the dog home and named him Monster.

1.The old house on the corner looked _______ to the kids.

A.scary B.beautiful C.comfortable D.fascinating

2.What color is the ball the children played with?

A.Grey. B.Red. C.Black. D.Yellow.

3.Who helped the children find their ball in the end?

A.A stranger. B.A cat. C.A monster. D.A dog.

4.What can we know from the passage?

A.The children entered the old house with a special key.

B.The old house was completely dark inside in the daytime.

C.A dog, together with its owner, lived in the old house.

D.Mariana felt sorry for kicking the ball into the old house.

The Lady’s Lamp

Once there was a poor lady who lived on a hill near the seashore. She had no children and lived a lonely life. She was so poor that she had to work hard every day.

But one night as she sat at her work, the lady said to herself while the winds blew, “I wish I could be of some use in the world. Why can’t I do good to someone besides myself?” At last, she came up with an idea.

She decided that she would keep a lighted lamp at the window for the sailors every night. She found that ships sometimes were broken up on the rocks in the sea, since there was no lighthouse to warn them of their danger at night. Maybe her lamp would warn them when their ships came near the rocks on the coast.

The lady felt glad when the thought flashed through her mind. She found that, if she worked an hour later each night, she could earn enough to pay for the oil for the lamp. So she worked late and earned money to buy the oil; and then she placed the lamp at the window each night. In this way she saved many lives.

She did this for five years without reward, or the hope of reward. However, good deeds (行為) are often found out. The sailors whose lives had been saved began to send gifts to her from faraway countries. They sent her tea from China, cloth from India, silk from France and grapes from Spain. But the poor lady did not need these gifts to make her happy. She gave many of them to the poor and the sick.

She was happy with the thought that she was doing good. So, as long as she lived, she lit her lamp each night, and placed it at the window.

1.The lady decided to light the lamp for _______.

A. the sick B. the children C. the poor D. the sailors

2.How could the lady pay for the lamp oil?

A. She worked one more hour each night.

B. She raised money from the sailors.

C. She got rewards from her country.

D. She sold tea and grapes to others.

3.The lady was happy because ________.

A. she got gifts from faraway countries

B. she helped many people in her way

C. the sailors gave gifts to the sick

D. the sailors found out her deeds

閱讀短文,根據(jù)短文內容回答問題。

It's not useful for you if you can't remember what you read or study. You just waste your time.

If you want to remember what you study or read well, you must have a special purpose or reason for reading. When you know why you're reading, you can remember better.

Think why a salesgirl in a store goes away when your answer to her offer is "No, thank you. I'm just looking around", because both you and she know that you aren't sure what you want. But if you say, "Yes, thank you. I want a pair of sunglasses. "Instead, She will say, "Right this way, please.” And she will be very glad to lead you to what you want.

It's quite the same with your studying or reading. If you choose a book, you only think, " just look” but without any purpose, you are likely to get nothing. But if you know what you want, you are almost sure to get something from it when you read or study. You want"to find out more about…"to understand the reason for…". A good reader has a clear purpose or reason for what he is doing. He can connect the information to his goal and remember it better.

Reading is not one single activity, either. At least two important processes go on at the same time.

As you read, you take in ideas quickly and correctly. But at the same time you express your own ideas to yourself when you read: You have a kind of mental conversation with the writer. If you express your ideas, they may sound like this:"Yes, I agree. That's my opinion, too, or"Oh, I thought that record was broken much earlier. I'd better check those dates,” Or “But there are some other facts to be considered!” You don’t just sit there taking in ideas, you really do something else, and that something else is very important.

Another process of thinking about what you read includes judging it, connecting it to what you already know, and using it for your own goals. In other words, a good reader is a critial (批評的)reader. When you read, you can tell between facts and opinions. Another part of critical reading is you can judge sources. Still another part is drawing right conclusions.

1.Is it useful if you can't remember what you read or study?

2.What must you do if you want to remember what you read?

3.What can you get if you just look at a book without any purpose?

4.How many important processes when you read?

5.What's the passage mainly about?
