【題目】

Ukuleles(尤克里里)look like small guitars, but unlike guitars, they usually only have four strings. Ukuleles come from Hawaii(夏威夷)and make bright, happy sounds. They make people think of island vacations and summer days. Even though ukuleles come from Hawaii, they are now popular around the world. One of the reasons is because they are fun and easy to play.

Playing a ukulele may be easy, but making one is not. Ukuleles must be made step by step. First the head and neck are glued to the body. As soon as the glue is dry, the fingerboard is glued onto the neck. Once(一旦)that is dry, the ukulele maker sands the fingerboard to make it smooth.

Next, the bridge is glued onto the body. The bridge holds the strings and allows them to make sounds. After the bridge is in place, the ukulele can be painted and decorated. The next step is to connect tuning heads to the top of the ukulele. Then finally the strings are put on the instrument. Now a player can make music.

1According to the article, what kind of music does a Ukulele make?

A. Sad music. B. Fun music. C. Difficult music. D. Unpopular music.

A. In an easy way. B. Like a big guitar. C. In several steps. D. With some strings.

【題目】Many people run for exercise. But what will you do if you are not a “born” runner or jogger (慢跑者)? You may still want a kind of exercise that’s inexpensive and easy to do. Why not try walking?

Walking requires no special equipment (裝備). It is a kind of exercise that almost any normal, healthy person can do. Walking is good for your health like jogging or running; it will just take longer. Jogging and running make your heart work harder than walking. They also put more stress on your legs and feet than walking does.

The problem with walking is that most people don’t take it seriously. But there’s a big difference between serious walking and the walking that most of us do. Walking, like jogging, should have a steady and continuous motion (穩(wěn)健而持續(xù)的動作).

If you want to get your exercise by walking, you need to have your own walking plan. After all, runners and joggers set goals for themselves. Walkers need goals, too. You also need to set a course to walk. Start by walking about 15-30 minutes a day. Increase your time and distance (距離) slowly. And try increasing your walking speed little by little.

If you prefer to jog or run, follow the same advice. Start off slowly. Spend most of the first few days just walking. Then, start walking and running on the same day. Run or jog a short distance, then walk for a while, then, run, then walk. Follow that pattern for 15-30 minutes a day. Slowly make each run longer and each walk shorter. Later on, you can increase your distance, speed and exercise time.

【題目】The rising costs of health care have become a problem for many countries in the world. To deal with this problem, it is recommended that a big part of the government's health budget (預算) be used for health education and disease prevention instead of treatment. In fact, many kinds of diseases are preventable in many ways and preventing a disease is usually much cheaper than treating it. For example, people could avoid catching a cold if they dressed warmly when the weather starts getting cold. But many people get sick because they fail to do so, and have to spend money seeing a doctor.

Daily habits like eating more healthy food would have kept millions of families from becoming bankrupt if the patients had taken action for early prevention. For example, keeping a balanced diet seems to be quite important.

One very effective (有效的) and costless way of prevention is regular (規(guī)律的) exercise, which is necessary for a healthy mind and body. Regular exercise, such as running, walking, and playing sports is a good way to make people feel better or reduce stress.

Health education plays a key role in improving people's health. By giving people more information about health, countries could help people understand the importance of disease prevention and ways to achieve it. For example, knowing one's family medical history is an effective way to help keep healthy. Information about health problems among close relatives will make them aware of what they should do to prevent certain diseases through lifestyle changes, which will work before it is too late.

However, paying more attention to disease prevention does not mean medical treatment is unimportant. After all, prevention and treatment are just two different ways toward the same effect. In conclusion, we could save money on health care and treat patients more successfully if our country spends more money on health prevention and education.

1What’s the best title of the passage?

A. Prevention or Education B. Prevention or Treatment

C. Health or Illness D. Exercise or Illness

2Which of the following can replace (替代) the underlined word bankrupt?

A. unable to be cured B. unable to pay one’s debts (債務)

C. stronger than ever before D. more successful than ever before

3We learn from the passage that ________.

A. dressing warmly can prevent diseases

B. a balanced diet is cheaper than regular exercise

C. the more health education, the better

D. the government’s health budget should be increased

4Which of the following shows the structure (結構) of the passage?

CP (Central Point) P (Point)

Sp (Sub-point次要點) C (Conclusion)

A. B. C. D.

【題目】

JOINING A CHOIR

I’ve always loved singing, but singing hasn’t always loved me. I

would open my mouth with a beautiful song in my head, fully expecting

my voice to follow suit — only to get an awful tone (音調)in return.

Still, without a second thought, I continued to try to sing whenever

possible. On car journeys, when my now twenty something sons were

small, they would make a great play ( hands over their ears, shouting

‘ No,Mum,stop!’) of going through punishment as I sang along to the radio.

Never in a hundred years would I have thought about joining a choir. And when I did finally become a member of my first choir 15 years ago, something fantastic happened to my life. From the first time I experienced my voice as something special but also comfortable, in harmony (和諧)with the other singers, I lost my heart to singing. It was like falling in love. And everyone in the choir had the same shining smiles and bright eyes — singing made them feel happy, too.

Although it is singing itself that makes me happy,it is also how a choir works together. There is something magical about breathing together. The voice of everyone singing quietly together is powerful and excitingly mysterious (神秘的),almost spiritual.

And there’s the unexpected friendship from the activities we do as a choir: raising money for good causes and taking our singing sometimes to places where people are forgotten and sad.

I am now a member of six choirs and,if I can, sing every day of the week. I stand in front of several hundred people, and know that some,if not all,of each song will sound not bad at all.

1What did the writer’s sons think of her singing when they were small?

A. Terrible. B. Comfortable. C. Fantastic. D. Boring.

2When did the writer join her first choir?

A. A week ago. B. Six years ago. C. Fifteen years ago. D. Twenty years ago.

3What brings the writer the unexpected friendship?

A. Having car journeys with her sons.

B. Helping others by singing in choirs.

C. Having shining smiles and bright eyes.

D. Singing in front of hundreds of people.
