In it, he said: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content (內(nèi)容) of their character.” Those words remain famous to this day.

After the march, King and other civil rights leaders met with US President John F. Kennedy and vice—president Lyndon B. Johnson at the White House.

In 1964, following the assassination (刺殺) of Kennedy, president Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law. The law gave all Americans equal rights in working, voting (選舉) and the use of public facilities (設(shè)施).

Since the march in Washington, 50 years has passed. Much progress has been made. Barack Obama became the first African—American president in 2009, and his second term ended in 2016. But there is still work to be done.
