One day, a small business owner decided to ______ because he'd had enough of the endless work, enough of the lack of payback, enough of the uncomfortable loneliness.
He went into the forest to have one last talk to the wise man he met before. "Wise man," he said. "Can you give me one good reason why I shouldn't give up?"
The answer surprised him. "Look ______ you," the wise man said. "Do you see the fern(蕨類植物) and the bamboo?"
"Yes," the man said.
"When I planted the fern and the bamboo, I took very good care of them. So both of them got enough food and water. They enjoyed ______ in spring and were protected from the storms in autumn. The fern quickly grew from the earth. Its large long leaves soon ______ the forest floor. Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed (種子). ______ I did not give up on the bamboo. In the second year, the fern grew even better than before but nothing came from the bamboo seed. In year three there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not give up. In year four, again, there was nothing from the bamboo seed. Still I would not give up and I waited. "
"Then in the fifth year a tiny sprout(芽) came out from the earth. Compared to the fern, it was ______ . But day by day the sprout grew bigger. Within six months, the sprout had reached a height of 100 feet. It had spent the five years growing roots(根). Those roots made it strong and gave it what it needed to stay alive."
"Do you know, young man, that all this time you have been struggling, you have been growing? Grow the roots that you need to produce your ______ ."
"Don't compare yourself to others. The bamboo has a different purpose from the fern, but they both make the forest beautiful. Your time will come. You will rise high."
The small business owner thought this was good advice. He left the forest to practise what the wise man had told him.
When it seems like nothing is happening in your life, even with all the work that you're doing, remember that you're probably growing roots, not fruit. Being hard-working and ______ , one day not long from now, you will have a great harvest.

A desert is a difficult place for animals to live, and some have unusual ways of making a living. The Texas lizard has a strange way to keep itself safe. When a predator(掠食動(dòng)物) gets too close, blood goes out from the lizard's eyes. Then it breathes in much air to make its body look bigger. Another interesting desert animal is the javelina. To make a predator afraid and run away, the javelina bravely faces the animal. It makes a big noise with its teeth. It raises the hard hairs on its back to make itself look bigger. The javelina also gives off a strong smell as a warning when it is afraid. This smell is so strong that javelinas are also called "smelly pigs". Javelinas keep safe by staying close to their family, so there's a good chance they can make a predator change its mind!
You might think a rain forest would be easier to live in than a desert. After all, there's plenty of food and water in a rain forest. But that also means a lot of animals live there. Being able to climb trees is a useful skill in the rain forest. It allows an animal to keep away from predators. The sloth spends most of its life in the treetops. Its strong, curved claws(爪子) help it climb and hang upside down from branches. The sloth also moves very slowly. It does this so it's not noticed. The aye-aye lives only in the rain forest of Madagascar, near Africa. The aye-aye is a night animal. This helps it to stay safe from daytime predators. However, the number of the aye-aye keeps going down and they may die out. People have hunted it because they think it brings bad luck. Also, much of the rain forest in Madagascar has been cut down, which has destroyed the aye-aye's home. Today there are laws(法律) to keep people from killing it.
1.What is the passage mainly about?
A. What the animals in the desert look like.
B. How the animals in the rain forest find their food.
C. How the animals in the desert and in the rain forest stay safe.
D. What animals are in danger of losing their living environment.
2. How does a lizard protect itself when a predator gets too close?
A. It climbs trees.
B. It makes a big noise.
C. It gives off a strong smell.
D. Blood goes out from its eyes.
3.Why does the sloth move very slowly?
A. Because it is a kind of lazy animal.
B. Because it is too fat to move fast.
C. In order not to be easily noticed.
D. In order not to hurt its claws.
4.What can we learn from the passage?
A. The aye-aye is a welcome animal in Africa.
B. There is no food, no water and no danger in the desert.
C. The lizard and the javelina can make their bodies look bigger to keep safe.
D. It is really dangerous for the sloth to live in the forest no matter where it is.

Ever since a 71-year-old Brazilian(巴西的) man, Joao Pereira de Souza, saved a dying penguin(企鵝), he's been receiving visits from his feathered friend every year.
In 2011, Pereira de Souza found a hungry Magellanic penguin on the beach near his house. He named the penguin "Dindim" and fed it every day until it was strong enough to leave. 1. Magellanic penguins regularly swim thousands of kilometers a year to find places to have their babies on the coast of Argentina and Chile. 3. Many of Pereira de Souza's friends thought that when Dindim finally left, that was it for the human-bird friendship. But a few months later, Dindim returned and found Pereira de Souza. "It arrives in June and leaves to go home in February, and every year it becomes closer to me," Pereira de Souza said, " 4. If others try, it pecks(啄) them or waddles away. "

Once upon a time there was a writer who liked to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day he was walking along the beach. As he looked down the beach, he saw someone moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day. So he began to walk faster to cateh up. As he got closer, he saw that a young man was reaching down to the shore, picking something up and very gently throwing it into the ocean.
As he got closer, he called out, "Good morning! What are you doing?"
The young man stopped, looked up and answered, "Throwing starfish into the ocean."
"I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?"
"The sun is up, and the tide(潮汐) is going out, and if I don't throw them in, they'll die."
"But, young man, don't you see that there are miles and miles of beach, and starfish all along it? You can't possibly make a difference!"
The young man listened politely, then picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean, past the breaking waves and said, "It made a difference for that one." And he kept throwing starfish.
There is something very special in each and every one of us. All of us can make a difference in life. If we know that, we have the power to shape the future.
1.When did the writer meet the young man?
2.Why did the young man throw starfish into the ocean?
3.What can we learn from the passage?
