If you are given only 1 yuan, could you live in a city for one day? It seems this may be a little difficult. But students from Xi’an did it.

On April 10, more than 60 students from the Middle School Attached to Northwestern Polytechnical University took part in the One Yuan Metropolis Survival. The charitable organization for teenagers called Imperceptible Education held this activity. Students not only have to live, but they also have to deal with a lot of hard tasks. It has happened in eight cities and is going to four others, including Beijing, in June.

To make money, many students looked for part-time jobs and saw how hard life was. Zhang Qiyue, 14, asked more than 10 restaurants for a job and finally got one chance. “We were sad when they said no. But gradually(逐漸地), we got used to it,” he said. After being a waiter for an hour, he got 25 yuan.

Some made use of their talents by singing and dancing in parks or shopping malls. Many people who walked by took notice and helped them. Zhao Jiacheng, 14, drew pictures and made paper crafts(手工). “This showed it’s important to learn a special skill,” he said.

Living was hard, but finishing the tasks wasn’t any easier. They went to different places to finish tasks in a short time. The most amazing one was when they had to exchange things worth thousands yuan with only a piece of paper in half an hour. “We learned how to persuade others. ①Some days, don’t you think, “Wouldn’t it be nice if the clothes just washed itself?” Self-cleaning clothes may sound crazy. But Australian researchers have found a way to make something like this possible!

②A team at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, found a way to put special nanostructures (納米結(jié)構(gòu)) into clothing, which can then clean the clothes. When sunlight hits the nanostructures, they break down the dirt and marks that don’t belong on your clothes.

③The nanostructures don’t break down the real clothing because cotton and the other clothing materials are too strong to break down. According to CNN, the researchers cover the clothing in a solution made of silver and copper(銅) nanostructures. All it takes is 40 minutes of sunlight and your clothes will look as good as new.

④So if you spill on yourself during lunch, you can step outside for a walk, and it will be clean by the time you go inside. It not only makes your life easier, but it can also be good for the environment.

⑤According to the US Department of Energy, washing a piece of clothing uses about 25 gallons of water. Water is a very important resource, so using less of it to wash clothes is better for the environment. But one of the scientists at RMIT University knows more needs to be done.

⑥“There’s more work to do before we can start throwing out our washing machines,” said Dr Rajesh Ramanathan, “but this is a strong foundation(基礎(chǔ)).” So what’s the next step? Ramanathan wants to either start selling the solution by itself or asking clothing makers to treat(處理) the clothing with the solution while clothes are being made.

1.According to the first three paragraphs, _____.

A. the self-cleaning clothes are easily worn out

B. the clothes will be covered with silver and copper after self-cleaning

C. people can use the self-cleaning clothes on rainy days

D. the nanostructures can break down dirt and marks on clothes

2.What does the underlined word “solution” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. 方案 B. 溶液 C. 水盆 D. 模型

3.What do Paragraphs 4 & 5 talk about?

A. How the self-cleaning clothes are made.

B. How the self-cleaning clothes work.

C. What advantages the self-cleaning clothes have.

D. What helps the self-cleaning clothes work.

4.From the passage, we learn that _____.

A. it’s time to throw out our washing machines

B. the solution sells well

C. clothing makers like the solution

D. the solution is not on sale yet

5.We might read the above passage in ________.

A. a fashion book B. a guide book

C. a science magazine D. a newspaper advertisement.

Most people hope to have a memory which helps them succeed in study, work and life. Can memory be improved? Luckily, hundreds of studies in the past 50 years have already given us a clear answer.

A healthy lifestyle keeps your brain young and memory sharp. First of all, it is necessary to have a healthy diet. Eating more food rich in B vitamins and Vitamin E, such as vegetables and lean meat, helps you have a better memory. Doing exercise can keep your brain alive, too. Proper exercise provides much needed oxygen for the brain. Running, riding a bike, swimming and even walking two or three times a week are helpful. Moreover, getting enough sleep is important. When your brain gets a good rest, it can work well. The healthier your lifestyle is, the better your memory will become, but do not expect a sudden change---it takes a long time to make a difference.

Memory skills help you remember things better. The following three are the most widely used. Chunking(分塊記憶) is a way of remembering a piece of information by cutting it into smaller ones. For example, to memorize a ten--digit telephone number 2127983630, you can divide the digits into three groups: first 212, then 798, and lastly 3630. This method is far more effective(有效的) than remembering a string of 10 digits. Organization means organizing information into groups of the same kind. For example, trees, grass and flowers are plants; tigers, pandas, horses and cows are animals. Imagery(形象) is remembering newly learnt information by using your imagination and connecting it with something that you are familiar(熟悉的) with.

However, memory skills will hardly work if you don’t understand the information. What’s more, only a regular review can make the memory last long. That is why students are always advised to go over what they have learnt after one day and then after three days, and then use it as often as possible.

Human brains are like muscles(肌肉) that need nutrients(營養(yǎng)) and exercise to become stronger. If you make a few lifestyle changes and try some memory skills, you can certainly improve your memory.
