It was already 8:30 in the morning. Lin Tao, a 14-year-old schoolboy, still didn't show up at school. He was often late for school! The teacher called his father and got to know he played computer games online late the night before and couldn't get up that morning. In fact, he had played online games since the age of 11. Lin Tao is not alone. Information from China Internet Center shows that the number of teenage Internet user in China had been about 170 million by the end of December, 2017. Many of them, like Lin Tao, spend too much time playing computer games online.

To deal with this problem, the Chinese government worked out a draft regulation(法規(guī)草案)in January this year. According to the regulation, players need to use their own ID cards to play online games. Game companies will control teenagers' online game time. They will not be able to play online games between 12:00 at night and 8:00 in the morning. If they are still playing during the time, the game companies will lock them out.

Many people think that the regulation can surely better protect Chinese young game players online, while others doubt whether it can successfully stop them from playing games too much. "More and more people come to know that playing online games too much not only brings teenagers healthy and study problems, but also makes them depressed(沮喪的)and lonely," Tong Xiaojun, director from a university, told CCTV. A THINKING MACHINE

In 1769, long before computers were invented, a man from Hungary(匈牙利)built a wonderful machine that could play chess very well. It made people all over Europe happy and beat nearly everyone it played against .including famous people like French leader Napoleon Bonaparte, and scientist and inventor Yenjamin Franklin. For years, many people believed that it was truly a thinking machine. There were people who said it was a hoax, but could not prove it or explain how it worked. About 85 years later, the secret was finally found. There was a man hiding inside the machine all the time... who was very good at playing chess!

ZOO ESCAPE(逃脫)

On November 9, 1874, New York newspaper, The Herald, ran a terrible story on its front page. It said that all the animals in the Central Park Zoo had escaped and were running around the city. It said the police were working to save people, but 27 people had already been killed, and 200 people hurt. It warned everyone to stay at home to avoid the danger. Many people in New York were terrified, and did as the paper said. If only they had read the final words of the article, which said; "Not one word of it is true. Not a single act described has taken place." It was just a hoax. The story was made up by Thomas Connery, aneditor at The Herald, who wanted to draw attention to the poor condition of cages in the zoo.

The first woman to cross the finishing line of the 1980 Boston Marathon(馬拉松)was 23-year-old Rosie Ruiz. There is a popular belief that goldfish only have a three-second memory. But a 15-year-old schoolboy from Adelaide has just finished an experiment to tell us that it is not true. He shows everybody that the goldfish is smarter than we think.

"I don't believe that they had a three-second memory because animals need their memory, so they build up over time a knowledge of where the food is," said Rory Stokes, a student at the Australian Science and Mathematics School.

He did the experiment in a small tank(魚缸)of goldfish. "I decided to get a bit of red Logo and just feed them next to that. Every day I'd put it in and spread food around it." He said.

"At first they were a bit scared of it, but by the end of the three weeks, they were actually almost coming before I put the food in."

After leaving the fish alone for a week, Rory placed the red Logo block in the tank again.

"They remembered perfectly well," he said.

"They actually had a time faster than the average(平均)of the three feeds before I left."

The goldfish showed that they not only could store information, but also had the ability to get it back at a later date.

Culum Brown. a researcher at Sydney′s Macquarie University, has studied fish behavior for more than ten years.
