So he put a notice on the gate of the farm: whoever finds the gold watch will be rewarded 100 dollars.

People tried their best to look for the watch in order to get the reward. However, the barn was too large and the straw in the barn was too thick, it was getting dark they were still unable to find it. So they give up the reward of 100 dollars one by one.

But only a small boy was still not discouraged but kept looking for it. He had nothing to eat throughout the day. In order to solve the family problem, he looked forward to finding the gold watch and let his parents, brothers and sisters have a full meal.

The night was already getting late, the boy was also tired. He was lying in the straw to have a rest when he heard a strange “ticktock”.

Learning to save money when you’re young is an important lesson. All good habits begin early, and saving is a skill that everyone needs. Many people— adults included do not have a good sense of saving for the long run.

I have been lucky to learn this lesson early because I have had a grass-cutting business since I was 10 years old. Of the money I make I spend about 10 percent and save the other 90.

Making sure you save and don’t spend too much is a good way to build up wealth (財富). I have put my earnings in a bank. Many teens I know spend all the money they earn so it never has a chance to grow. Young people should realize that their teenage years are a great time to begin saving.

At high school many parents pay for almost everything, so your expenses can be small. If you have a job, you should have fun with some of the money. But you should also save some so that it will grow. Then you can begin planning for your future. When you spend money, you not only lose that money, but also lose the interest you could have earned by saving it.

After high school, college is expensive and then “real” life begins, with expenses such as food and rent. If you can hold onto a good percentage of the money you earn as a teen, going to college and buying a house will be much easier. If you are in your teen without any savings, you will always have to struggle. The earlier you begin saving, the easier it is to create a nest egg.

Later in life it can be hard to start saving because general costs of living are more expensive and you may only have enough to pay your bills. If you want to buy a house and have a family, you need money to start with, which comes from saving.

Many say money cannot make you happy, and this is true. But money can help you to lead a secure life.

Saving early will mean you will have to work for fewer years when you are older. It will also allow you to spend time doing the things that you want to do.

In addition to this, it will mean you can live the way you want to without worrying.

Do you know that a student can produce up to 240 pounds of school waste and lots of waste gas during a term? This includes transportation, food, paper, pens, pencils and so on.

Transportation

Many parents like driving their kids to school every day. We all know waste gas from cars is a main cause of air pollution. If parents who live in a neighborhood can take turns to drive their kids to school each day, that’ll be better. Another way of going green is to walk to school if students live near it.

Food

It is surprising that only one primary school could produce up to 19,000 pounds of lunch waste each year. That is only one school. One way to help take care of the environment is to stop using plastic bags. There are all kinds of environmental boxes for students to put their food in.

Paper, pens and pencils

A lot of paper is thrown away by American students. They throw away about 1.6 billion pens every year. They waste many pens and the chemicals of them are bad for the environment. Much more pencils are thrown away than pens. Pencils are made of trees, so if more pencils are thrown away, more trees will be cut down. So students should reuse paper, pens and pencils instead of throwing them away.

Backpacks

As fashion comes and goes, almost every kid needs a new backpack every year. They can save a lot of money and materials if they reuse the same schoolbags.

1.What’s the good way of going green for the students who live near the school?

3.What are pencils made of?

A few years ago, my husband and I were on an island for a weekend with our 3- and 4-year-old daughters. As we went back and thought about what to do next, our girls jumped in and told us exactly what they wanted to do. “We want to go to the butterfly museum, ” said Ariela and Eliana.

As soon as we walked into the main area of the museum, we saw thousands of beautiful butterflies, all flapping (拍打) their colourful wings.

My girls were jumping up and down and I knew we had made the right decision to come to the museum. They were having so much fun. I turned to our museum tour guide because I was curious and asked, “How long do butterflies live? ” She said, “About ten days. ” “What can butterflies do in ten days? ” I asked. The guide stopped, looked at me and said, “They make the world a more beautiful place. ” “Wow, ” I said, “I never thought about butterflies like that. Thank you. ”

After we said goodbye, I couldn’t stop thinking about what the guide had said. She was right. We all have something to offer the world with the time we have. When we focus our gifts on taking care of each other every day, we can make a difference.

Appreciate(感激) the influence you can have on your family, friends, co-workers and neighbours. Like a butterfly, you have your own way of making the world a little better for everyone.

Coffee has been a part of people’s lives for thousands of years, and today it is still a favourite drink of millions of people in the world. Coffee is so popular ,but do you know the story of coffee and how it was discovered?

There is an old story that says coffee was discovered in Africa long ,long time ago. One day,a farmer was watching his goats, and he saw them eat some small berries(干種子)from a plant. After they ate the berries, the goats became very active. The man often felt tired,so he decided to try the berries too. Surprisingly, he did not feel tired any more.Coffee plants were thus discovered. Then coffee was taken from Africa to Arabia(阿拉伯半島),and there it was first used as medicine. The Arabs kept coffee a secret for many years. Later, coffee came to Turkey(土耳其),then italy, then France. From Europe, the coffee plant was taken to America. People found that coffee plants grew well in many parts of South America, so large coffee farms were started, and many coffee plants were grown. Most of us use alarm clocks to wake up at the right time for school or work. We look at our watches to know the right time for the bus or train. However, there is also a right time to eat, sleep, exercise, and take medicine. We can’t look at a clock for the right time for these activities. We must listen to the clock inside our bodies: the biological(adj.生物的) clock.

Barbara Wells exercised every morning. She woke up at 6:00 a.m. She ran about two miles before she went to work. But Barbara’s legs and back started to hurt. She did some exercise before she ran. But her legs and back still hurt. She ran slower, but the pain didn’t stop. Barbara talked to her doctor. The doctor said, “Don’t run in the morning. Try to exercise later in the day. That is the time when your body is at the right temperature for exercise after work.” Her legs and back didn’t hurt anymore.

Today, doctors are learning more about chronobiology(n.生物鐘學(xué)), the study of biological clocks. They are learning about the importance of time for our bodies. For example, it is best for people to go to sleep on time every night and to eat only when they’re hungry. Also, doctors discovered that some illnesses, such as heat attacks, occur(v.發(fā)生)most often in the morning. This information tells them that the best time to take heart medication may be at night. When patients take heart medication at night, they may prevent a heart attack in the morning.

Many doctors believe chronobiology(生物鐘) can help us live healthier lives. It may be the right time to listen to these doctors!

My favorite great book is The Adventure of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Tom lives with his aunt Polly in a quiet street of St Petersburg,Missouri. He's a lively and clever young boy,and he finds himself in many exciting adventures(冒險).He runs away with his two friends,Huck Finn and Joe,to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River for several days. With Huck he goes looking for treasure, with Becky he gets lost in a cave, and finally, they find a box of gold.

My favorite scene in the book is when everyone thinks Tom is dead.He decides to go to his own funeral(葬禮).He hides and watches for a time, and then suddenly he appears.Everyone is surprised to see him but they're also pleased to see him alive.

Tom is the hero of the story, but there are other important characters.Huck is an outsider and everyone is afraid of him.Becky is pretty with fair hair. Joe is Tom's best friend. And Injun Joe is the bad man of the story.

The theme of the story is about children growing up.It describes how strangers are seen in small towns of America. Finally,it talks about freedom, social rules and how people are punished for bad behaviors.

Why do I think The Adventure of Tom Sawyer is a great book? Mark Twain wrote the story in 1876,but it's still read and loved by people all over the world today. And although it's only a story,Twain wrote it in the everyday English of the southern states of America in the 19th century,so it sounds very real. Today it's still thought to be one of the greatest books in American literature.Go on--read it! I know you'll enjoy it,too.

Nowadays people are making themselves beautiful in Korean ways.

“Thank goodness you have double eyelids(雙眼皮). Your parents will save a lot of money,” said a friend when I was five years old. Double eyelids, which almost all the white people have, are rare among Northeast Asians. Only 25% of South Koreans are born with double eyelids.

I never quite understood how having double eyelids saved my parents’ money until this summer. When I came back to Seoul, everywhere I noticed cosmetic surgery clinics(整形診所) and advertisements with South Korean women—tall, thin, with milky skin, long legs, nice big eyes and perfect noses. I found that South Korean beauty meant looking as “white” as possible.

Cosmetic surgery has a kind of magical attraction to women—the promise of beauty. Women are often sure that suffering is necessary and worthy in order to be beautiful. This suffering is not for nothing. It is believed that beauty leads to attracting a better-looking partner, which then leads to a better-looking child and a better life.

Appearance is starting to be more important in workplaces. People with good appearance can have more chance. For example, my 29-year-old brother, who is slim and very tall, gets more job chances than his best friend, who is shorter and heavier, though both of them came from the same college, had the same good marks in their studies. In fact, many South Koreans believe that physical beauty equals happiness.

2.When did the writer understand having eyelids saved his parents’ money?

3.Why do so many women want to have cosmetic surgery?

4.What kind of people can get more job chances in the passage?

Sixteen is a special age in the United States. There’s often a special celebration for a girl’s 16th birthday---a big party called Sweet-16. It is like a wedding reception(結(jié)婚晚宴) in the number of guests and gifts handed out.

About a month before the party, the girl’s family sends out invitations to the guests. They must buy a special present for the birthday girl and the girl guests find good dresses to wear. A sweet-16 present usually costs $40 to $60. This is about $20 more than the usual-cost of a birthday present.

The party itself is not held at someone’s house. The hostess rents(租賃) a reception hall for the event. Food, cake and a DJ are provided. Around 6’clock, guests arrive and meet the birthday girl. Then the girl and her father have a special father-daughter dance. After that, guests dance for about 30 to 45 minutes.

Then there is the most important part of the Sweet-16 party, the candle-lighting ceremony.

The sweet-16 hostess stands behind 16 unlit(未點燃的) candles and dedicates(獻給) each candle to her friends, family, and anything that she feels is important to her. A lot of crying and hugging goes on at this time.

Afterwards, people sit and eat. Most guests begin leaving around 11 o’clock.

This school year, I have been to two Sweet-16s. I am one of the youngest students in my grade (My birthday is in December). I’ll have to wait another year before I can have my own special Sweet-16 party. I can’t wait for it!

2.How much does a usual birthday present for a teenager cost in the USA?

3.What is the most important part of the Sweet-16 party?

4.How old is the writer?
