Dragon Head Raising Day: time for a haircut
China is a country with many colorful days and festivals. The Dragon Head Raising Day (Longtaitou) is one of them.

Habits in Russia
There is an old saying that says when in Rome, do as the Romans do. I learned the meaning of this when I stayed in Russia as a visiting scholar(學(xué)者).
One day I invited some of my Chinese friends to a famous local restaurant in Moscow. My guests and I were excited about our meeting. We had a lively talk until the waiter told me that we were too loud. We lowered(降低) our voices. 1. The waiter came over to us two more times with the same message.
How bad an impression(印象) we must have left on the local people! In China, it's natural and important for a host(主人) to make a lively atmosphere(氣氛). However, in Russia and Western countries, having a meal in a public place means you must keep your voice low. 2. I felt bad about this.3.
4. My Russian friend Andrey always looks around and thinks for a while before leaving home. I asked him why he did this. “Aha,” Andrey said, “In Russia, people always spend about a minute going over things and plans in their minds before leaving home. 5.”
Finding the differences between cultures is so much fun. I like to keep my eyes and mind open.
A.But this didn't last long.
B.Russians have their own special habits, too.
C.You need to be polite to others.
D.So they won't leave anything necessary behind.
E.Luckily, people usually do not pay much attention to that in Russia.
F.Even though we tried our best, it's very difficult to fight against habits.

Each different part of China has its own special forms of traditional art. These usually try to represent the things that are important in life such as love, beauty and family. The most common things, from paper to clay to bamboo, are turned into objects of beauty.
According to Chinese history, sky lanterns were first used by Zhuge Kongming. He sent them out to ask for help when in trouble. Today, sky lanterns are used at festivals and other celebrations. They are made of bamboo and covered with paper. When the lanterns are lit, they slowly rise into the air like small hot?air balloons for all to see. They are seen as bright symbols of happiness and good wishes.
Paper cutting has been around for more than 1,500 years. Paper cutting sounds very easy but it can be difficult to do. The paper, usually red, is folded before it is cut with scissors. The most common pictures are flowers, fish, animals, and things about Chinese history. During the Spring Festival, they are put on windows, doors and walls as symbols of wishes for good luck and a happy new year.
Chinese clay art is famous because the clay pieces are so small but they look very real. The pieces are carefully shaped by hand from a very special kind of clay and then allowed to air?dry. After drying, they are fired at a very high heat. They are then polished and painted. Finally, materials such as wood or paper are added to make different things. It takes several weeks to complete everything. These small pieces of clay art show the love that all Chinese people have for life and beauty.

Now students’ English handwriting gets worse and worse. That makes their teachers feel worried. Is your English handwriting beautiful? If not, here are four steps that really work!
◆Use paper that has lines
Using paper that has lines can keep you writing straight when you write English words or sentences. Those lines on the paper can help you to write words in the right size. Be sure to fill the lined space completely. And make sure those capital letters(大寫(xiě)字母) are written properly.
◆Slow down
If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. For some kids, going slower makes the handwriting clear. If you write too fast, it’s hard for you to stop where you should, and even worse, you may make more mistakes.
◆ Hold your pencil right
When you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. Some kids press(按,壓) down really hard when they write. That makes the handwriting not nice. Try to relax yourself and don’t hold the pencil so hard. Let your writing appear nice and clean. If you do so, people will guess you are a student with a good habit.
◆Draw more pictures
Drawing can improve your handwriting. You need to use the skills to control your pencil better when you are drawing pictures. Even though you have no chance to draw at school, you can practice by yourself at home.
Handwriting is very important. Imagine you are a world-famous movie star or a well-known sports player, what do you do when your fans run up to you? Give them your autographs (親筆簽名), of course!
