What do people usually put in their living rooms? Perhaps you will think of something such as a TV, a coffee table or a sofa. But French designers(設(shè)計(jì)師)Mathieu Lehanneur and Anthony van den Bossche didn’t think that was enough. They wanted to add something new in people’s living rooms. So they created a do-it-yourself ecosystem (生態(tài)系統(tǒng)) named “Local River”. The system lets its owner grow fish and plants inside tanks(缸) in their living rooms.

In the DIY fish and gardening ecosystem, the plants on top of the tank feed on the waste of the fish below. It makes the water clean so the fish can go on living. In this way, the fish and plants in the “Local River”can keep the balanced environment with a little help from the owner. The system is also called “fridge-aquarium (冰箱水族館)” by some people because owners can use the fish and plants as food. That is to say, owners are able to grow fish and plants within the "Local River" before eating them. Almost any plant can grow on top of the tanks and most freshwater fish are able to live in the tanks below.

The“Local River”ecosystem from Paris comes in small and large models. It is a relaxing thing to have in your home.

Millions of people across China will crowd onto trains and buses next February, hurrying home to be with their families for the country’s most important holidays, Lunar New Year, or the Spring Festival. February 4th, 2019 marks the end of the Year of the Dog.

History of the Holiday

According to an ancient legend, Buddha(佛祖)asked all the animals to meet him on Lunar New Year. Twelve animals came, and Buddha named a year after each one.

The Year of Good Luck

Buddha announced that people born in each animal’s year would have some of that animal’s personality. If you were born in 1970, 1982, 1994 or 2006, you were born in the year of the Dog. In ancient times, the dog is considered the best symbol for honesty and loyalty(忠誠). People who were born in these years are believed to be honest, brave and filled with good luck and strength. They are said to get along best with people born in the year of the Tiger, Rat or Horse.

Festivals, Lions and Feasts(筵席)

On Lunar New Year’s Eve, the Chinese celebrate with fireworks and family gatherings. One of the most popular ways to celebrate the holiday is with the lion dance. During celebrations, dancers dressed as lions perform. The dancers are supposed to bring good luck to people. People often wear red. Legend has it that red can drive away bad luck.

A lady, in a plain(樸素的)cotton dress, and her husband, dressed in a homemade suit, stepped off a train. They walked into a university president’s office without an appointment(約定).

“We want to see the president,” the man said softly.

“He’ll be busy all day,” the secretary said.

“We’ll wait,” the lady replied.

For two hours, the secretary didn’t pay any attention to them, hoping the couple would give up and go away. They didn’t. The secretary finally decided to tell the president about it. The president agreed to meet them. But clearly, he didn’t want to do so. When the couple went into the president’s office, the lady said: “We had a son who ever studied in this university for one year. He loved here very much but he died last year. We would like to give a building to the university.”

The president glanced at(瞥了一眼)the cotton dress and homemade suit, and then said, “A building! Do you have any idea how much a building costs? We have over seven and a half million dollars worth of buildings at the university.” For a moment the lady was silent.

The president was pleased. He thought the couple could go away now.

The lady turned to her husband and said quietly: “Is that all it costs to start a university? Why don’t we just start our own?” Her husband nodded.

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,回答下列問題。

1.Where did the conversation happen?

2.Why did the couple want to see the president?

3.How much are the buildings at the university worth?

4.How did the president feel when he found the lady was silent?
