Old George bought the black gloves for just $35 ten years ago. They were made of lamb skin (羊羔皮), soft and warm and very strong. Until then, he had worn cheaper man-made material. Those gloves never lasted longer than three years. He first decided to buy the expensive gloves, because they would make him feel nice in front of others.
George never let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves, so they looked new. Losing this favourite thing was almost like losing a child to him.
Bad luck! George lost his expensive gloves on New Year’s Day…
Back home, George was at a loss. In deep winter, he could not do without a pair of gloves. If he bought cheap ones again, he would have to replace (更換) them very soon. If he bought a new leather (皮革的) pair, it would cost $50 now. He was upset that people no longer returned things they found on the road.
After the holiday, poor George decided to buy another leather pair. Before taking the subway, he went into Value Mart (特價(jià)市場(chǎng)) again to see if his gloves had been returned to the Lost and Found Office.
“What colour are they?”the woman in the office asked again.
“Black,”he gave the same answer. She looked into her drawer (抽屜) and took out a pair of men’s leather gloves.“Are they?”
“Yes! Those are mine!”George explained, with great joy in his eyes.

Do you know when restaurants were invented? The first restaurants were invented thousands of years ago. However, they were very different from restaurants today.
The first restaurants were in ancient Greece (希臘) and ancient Rome. These restaurants served food in large stone bowls. People didn’t order food from a menu. Everyone shared the food from big bowls. People believe that these places were very popular because most homes in ancient Greece and Rome did not have kitchens. Also, people didn’t have to store (儲(chǔ)存) food at home if they ate their meals at these restaurants.
Later, restaurant began to open in China. In the early 1100s, more than one million people lived in the city of Hangzhou, China. It was a very busy city, and people had money. All of these people had to eat. Smart cooks started cooking and selling food along the big street in the city. Unlike in ancient Greece and Rome, people in China could choose food from a menu. They didn’t have to eat the same food as everyone else.
For the next several centuries, there were restaurants all over the world. People could buy food in the street or at inns (小旅館). Then in the middle of the 1700s, restaurants started opening in Paris. These restaurants were more similar to restaurants we know today. There was a wider choice of food, and eating in these restaurants was a more enjoyable experience. In the 19th century, trains made travel much faster and simpler. In the end, this kind of restaurant began to appear all over Europe and in other parts of the world.

Dear Patrick,
Thank you for sharing your problems to me. You stay up late every day. It is a common problem for a Grade 9 student. I think a best way to solve it is to manage your time carefully. Try to finish some homework during lunchtime at school instead of play basketball, and then you can go to bed a little early at night.Maybe too much noise at home is other reason that makes you stay up late. Your grandfather keeps the TV very loud because his hearing (聽力) are not very good. How about losing your bedroom door when you study outside? Or perhaps you can talk him about your problem. I am sure he loves you very much that he will listen to you.I hope you think my advice is worth take .
Best wishes,
Ivan
