That year, I was a Junior 2 student. Falling off the stairs hurt me in the head. Almost everyone thought I was dead. But they were wrong. However, it was difficult to get back to normal life. I had to leave school and learn everything, walking, talking, and yes, maths.

To help me with that task, Mrs. Pillar volunteered to come to the hospital and later to my house once a week. We began with basic maths skills. As time passed by, I made progress.

I remember very vividly how she came to my home on Sundays, sat with me at the kitchen table and threw different coins on the table. She asked me to show her 38 cents, 17 cents, 63 cents. It was challenging, but she also made it fun.

After a year and a half, I had progressed a lot, both in body and mind, to return to school. Seven years later, I graduated from the University of Texas at the top of my class.

As years went by, I always kept in touch with Mrs. Pillar. Unluckily, one day my parents told me that Mrs. Pillar had been in hospital because she suffered a stroke (中風(fēng)).

Now it was my turn to help her. Mrs. Pillar lay in bed, unable to speak or know anybody around. I pulled some coins out of my pocket, dropped them on her bed, and asked her to show me 12 cents. The nurse thought that my action was very strange until one day Mrs. Pillar smiled happily as I began working with—just as she had worked with me years before. She made progress every day and was moved out of ICU (重癥監(jiān)護(hù)室) and finally out of hospital.

One day, I called to wish her a happy New Year. She spoke into the phone excitedly, “Happy New Year to you and your family, Michael. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.”

Mrs. Pillar was one of my Junior 2 teachers, but she taught me so much more about life than only maths.

1.Which of the following is NOT right according to the story?

A.Mrs. Pillar suffered a stroke and was in hospital. B.I fell off the stairs and had to leave school.

C.I returned to school with Mrs. Pillar’s help. D.Mrs. Pillar got better without my help.

2.What does the writer mean by saying “I graduated from the University of Texas at the top of my class” in Paragraph 4?

A.He was cleverer than his classmates. B.He worked very hard on maths.

C.Mrs. Pillar’s help greatly influenced him. D.His classmates failed to graduate.

3.The writer asked Mrs. Pillar to show him 12 cents in the hospital in order to ________.

A.make the nurse in the hospital feel strange B.play an interesting game with Mrs. Pillar

C.see whether Mrs. Pillar was getting better D.help Mrs. Pillar just as Mrs. Pillar helped him

4.What is the best title for the passage?

A.A Great Teacher B.Kindness Makes Wonders

C.Never Give Up D.Always Have A Dream

You have tried too hard but you don’t succeed; you’ve made all your efforts but you don’t get the results you want. What should you do? Give up and turn over a new page. Drop it like it’s hot, and run in the opposite direction as fast as you can.

Do you feel surprised? What is wrong with giving up? Oh yes, we all have been trained and asked to work hard to achieve our dreams, and that is a good thing. The problem comes out when all these inspirational quotes (勵志名言) start confusing us.

These messages tell people not to give up, but they don’t tell you that it should only apply to (適用于) your true dreams. They tell people to “try and try again” until they succeed, but that amount of effort should only be put toward what people really want in life and they should never give up no matter what life goals they have. The rest is all just there to confuse you, distract (使分心) you, give you a headache and sadness, so don’t let it happen.

If you are really not good at something, give it up and try to do something you like. Once you do something you like, you won’t feel bored and also won’t give it up. You know clearly what you want even the road to success is hard. So you need to know what you’re good at. To find your talent, you need to observe (觀察) the things around you and write down the things you’re interested in on your notebook. Then you can search them on the Internet, and know more about them. Asking your parents or friends for help is also a good idea because they can see something you can’t. They can help you know yourself clearly.

Try to discover your talent, your ability and your skills. Find out what you are good at, what makes you happy and then work on it. If you do, no one would have to tell you or inspire you not to give up because when you love something, you keep trying until you get it right and the enthusiasm flows from within. Don’t worry about what people will say or think. It’s your life, so you have to love it and be your own boss.

1.Inspirational quotes are suitable for those who ________.

A.are successful B.have no life goals

C.have true dreams D.never give up

2.Once you find something you like, you won’t ________.

A.achieve your dreams B.feel bored or give up

C.know yourself clearly D.continue it

3.Why can you ask your parents for help to find your talent?

A.They can see something you can’t. B.They are good at everything.

C.They are older than you. D.They know how to help you.

4.The underlined word “enthusiasm” in the passage means?

A.happiness B.curiosity C.ability D.warmth

5.What’s the main idea of this passage?

A.We can’t believe everything about inspirational quotes.

B.It’s not a bad thing for us to give up sometimes.

C.Each of us has our own talent and skills.

D.Anything is not so easy to do well.

閱讀短文,并按要求完成文后小題。

Every student spends lots of time studying and almost everyone would like their study to be more efficient (高效的). Here are two ways to help you manage your time better when studying.

Your study environment

Watching TV while studying is a bad idea and makes your study ineffective (無效的). So you’d better turn off the TV while you’re studying. Some students like listening to music while studying. Music is OK, but whether it helps or hurts depends on whether it can keep your mind at peace. Make sure that any music you listen to is actually helping you study, but not drawing your attention away. Good lighting and temperature are necessary, too. When it’s too hot or too cold, it will be harder for you to give all your attention to what you are working on.

Full attention for at least 40 minutes at a time

One of the most important things you can do to study efficiently is to give all the attention to your study for at least 40 minutes at a time. Don’t let anything else draw your attention away from the study during the period. Then have a rest and relax. Don’t study for too long a time because your brain gets tired and it needs a rest.

If you choose these ways, you will make an improvement in how you manage your time for study.

1.完成句子 If Henry likes listening to music while studying, he’d better choose the music that can keep his mind________________.
