【題目】Tim BernersLee is not the most famous inventor in the world. However, his invention has changed our lives.

He was born in London, England in 1955. When he was a small boy, Tim was interested in playing with electrical things. He studied science at Oxford University. He made his first computer from an old television at the age of 21.

Tim started working on early computers. At that time, they were much bigger than now. He worked in England then Switzerland. Tim was really interested in two things, computers and how the brain works. How could the brain connect so many facts so quickly? He had to work with people all over the world. They shared information about computers. It was hard to manage all the information. He answered the same questions again and again. It took a lot of time. It was even difficult for computers in the same office in Switzerland to share information. Tim also forgot things easily. Could a computer work like a brain? Could it “talk” to other computers?

There was an Internet already but it was difficult to use. In 1989, Tim BernersLee invented the World Wide Web (WWW) all by himself. This had a special language that helped computers talk to each other on the Internet. When people wanted to share information with others, they used the World Wide Web. The Internet grew quickly after that.

Tim BernersLee doesn't think he did anything special. He says that all of the ideas about the Internet were already there. All he did was to put them together. He says that many other people worked together to make the Internet what it is today.

Most inventors want to become rich. But Tim gave away the World Wide Web for nothing. He now works in America. He helps people share technology and wants the Internet to be free for everyone to use. Maybe he is the most important but least famous inventor in the world today!

C. He helped people understand better how the brain works.

4In what order did the following events take place?

a.Tim worked in England.

b.Tim worked in Switzerland.

d.Tim invented the World Wide Web.

e.Tim studied science at Oxford University.

A. c-e-d-a-b B. e-b-a-c-d

C. e-c-a-b-d

5What does the writer think of Tim BernersLee?

A. He is not famous because he is not rich.

【題目】Fifth-grader Kayla Martel loves basketball. But her school doesn’t have a girls’ team. So for the past four years, Kayla has played on the boys’ team at St. John the Apostle School in Clark, New Jersey. That hadn’t been a problem until earlier this year. The team was told that it either had to ask Kayla and another girl to leave the team or end its season early.

【題目】To: Aggie@ yahoo. com From: Joe@heinfo.Net

Subject: Help! Date: 21/ 10/ 2006 10:02 a. m.

Dear Aunt Aggie,

I’m having a problem with my classmate, Rena, at school. The other day I wrote an e-mail to another classmate, Beth, in which I said some things about Rena that perhaps weren’t very nice. Unluckily, when Beth was writing back to me, she accidentally forwarded(無(wú)意間轉(zhuǎn)發(fā))the message to Rena! Now Rena is really angry with me and won’t talk to me, and Beth is unhappy as well. She’s said sorry to me a hundred times already, but the harm is done. I feel bad, because I never would have said those things to Rena’s face, but how can I get her to forgive(諒解)me? What should I do?

Joe

To: Joe@ heinfo. net From: Aggie@ yahoo. com

Subject: Some advice Date: 22/ 10/ 2006 10:45 a. m.

Dear Joe,

This problem is more common than you might think! E-mail is very useful, but also very dangerous, as you don’t know where your message might end up! First of all, you should say sorry right away to Rena. Explain that it was a mistake, and that you didn’t mean to hurt her feelings. It may take time for her to be able to forgive you, but that’s up to her. Then you might want to do something nice for her. Perhaps send her some flowers to show that you’re truly sorry. Also, you should remember that old saying: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. ” And good luck!

Aggie

1What is Joe’s problem in the first e-mail?

A. Joe made Rena unhappy and he felt very sad.

B. Joe’s classmate, Rena, sent Beth an e-mail and made her unhappy.

C. Joe received a wrong e-mail from Rena and became angry.

D. Joe’s friend, Beth, is unhappy because Joe sent her an angry e-mail.

2After Rena’s feelings got hurt, what did Joe do?

A. He emailed her and said sorry. B. He asked Beth what he should do.

C. He emailed Aunt Aggie for help. D. He said sorry to Rena face to face.

3What does the underline sentence mean in the second e-mail? It means “______.”

A. because you don’t know who the e-mail is for

B. because you can never know who will get your e-mail at last

C. because you don’t know where your e-mail was written

D. because you never know where the message is from

4What advice did Aggie give Joe?

A. Joe, Beth and Rena should have a talk together.

B. Joe should wait for some time before saying sorry to Rena.

C. Joe should ask Beth to explain that to Rena.

D. Joe should say sorry to Rena, and then send her some flowers.
