【題目】Learning to love reading

Taking public transportation in the United States, you can often see people reading books on their way to school or work. But in China, I rarely (很少地) see people reading during their free time.

Are people’s attitudes toward reading different here? Not really. Data (數(shù)據(jù)) released by Amazon China in December 2017 show that Chinese people still read a lot. They simply prefer e-books over regular books.

However, other data show that reading is still more popular in the us than in China. Is there a reason for this difference? I’m not sure. What I do know is that China has a rich history of literature (文學(xué)). From classic novels like Romance of the Three Kingdoms (《三國(guó)演義》) to the modern science-fiction books The Three-Body Problem (《三體》), and many other styles, Chinese authors have created many fantastic written works.

Perhaps the difference starts from childhood. Reading textbooks and doing homework can make you feel quite tired. By the time you finish it, you might not feel like reading for fun. Chinese students definitely (肯定) have to read more and do more homework than US students. So it’s no wonder that they might not want to read much in their spare time.

But learning to love reading can be great. Reading can open doors to places, people and ideas that you cannot imagine. Even just a single book has the power to change your own personal beliefs and attitudes. Where will your next book take you?

1From Paragraph 1, what do we know about people in the US?

A. Most people take public transportation to work.

B. Students have homework to do on their way to school.

C. Many of them have the habit of reading.

D. They read books that are left behind on public transportation.

2Chinese authors have created many fantastic written works including ________.

A. classic novelsB. science-fiction books

C. realistic novelsD. All above

3Which of the following is TRUE?

A. Chinese people’s attitudes toward reading have changed.

B. Chinese people prefer e-books to regular books now.

C. Chinese people never read in their spare time.

D. Chinese people bought the most books from Amazon China in 2017.

4Why is reading less popular in China, according to the author?

A. Because Chinese people prefer to watch plays instead of reading.

B. Because it’s hard to choose what to read.

C. Because Chinese people already read enough books during their childhoods.

D. Because People’s childhood experiences may influence their reading habits.

5According to the author, reading books can ________.

A. help you learn more about schoolworkB. take too much of your time

C. make you feel tiredD. change your view of the world

【題目】We all know that lying (說謊) is wrong. But do you know that it is bad for both your physical and mental health? A recent study shows that telling fewer lies helps people physically and mentally.

“For ten weeks, 110 people aged from 18 to 71 were tested to see the relationship between the number of lies they told and their health,” said Anita Kelly, a professor at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. “When they lied more, their health declined,” said Kelly.

Researchers divided the people into two groups. Group A was told to avoid telling any lie for any reason to anyone. They may omit (忽略) the truth, refuse to answer questions, and keep secrets, but they can’t say anything that they know are not true. Group B was not told anything like this.

Over the study period, when people in Group A told fewer lies in a week than they did in other weeks, they experienced fewer health problems such as sore throats and headaches. Professor Linda Stroh said, “When you find that you don’t lie, you have less stress (壓力).” The results of past research show that each American tells about 11 lies a week. In both groups, when people lied less during a week, they reported better physical and mental health during that period.

“It’s certainly a good thing to have people be more honest,” said Robert Feldman of the University of Massachusetts. “It may improve our mental health, but I don’t think it can improve our physical health.”

1The underlined word “declined” means “________” in Chinese.

A. 變壞B. 改善C. 加強(qiáng)D. 混亂

2From the second paragraph, we can learn that ________.

A. the test continued for no more than one month

B. older people lie less than younger people

C. the number of lies one tells can affect one’s health

D. many people feel sick when they don’t tell lies

3People in Group A were allowed to ________.

omit the truth refuse to answer questions

keep secrets tell lies to strangers

A. ①②③B. ②③④C. ①②④D. ①③④

4According to Linda Stroh, ________.

A. mental health is more important than physical health

B. when people don’t lie, they feel more relaxed

C. to be honest can’t improve our physical health

D. telling lies is necessary sometimes

5We would most probably find this passage ________.

A. on a travel websiteB. in a story book
