Charles Dickens was born in 1812 in one of the small towns of England.

When Dickens was nine years old, his father found a job in London and the family moved there. Later on his father was put in to prison (監(jiān)獄) for owing (負(fù)債). His mother could not supply enough food to him and his younger brothers and sisters. He had to do something for his family. He did some housework and looked after his brothers and sisters. Their life was hard, so he could not go to school.
