Kitty O’Neil
Twelve - year - old Kitty O’Neil tapped her coach on the arm. “Let me try”, she said. She was already on the swim team, but this was different. One of the divers had not shown up, and Kitty wanted to help out. Her coach looked down at her.
She had been practicing dives, but could she really stand up to the competition?Besides, she was completely deaf. Hearing and balance go together. Many people thought a person who was deaf wouldn’t be able to dive well. However, Kitty did, and she won the first place at that swimming meet and went on to win the Junior Olympics in her district.
Kitty began diving with Dr. Sammy Lee, a famous coach and former Olympic diving champion. The teenager went to school in the morning and then spent most afternoons diving. It was hard work, and Kitty often hit the water the wrong way. However, she was somehow able to keep practicing. In her diving career Kitty won many blue ribbons and gold medals, but she wanted more. Perhaps she learned determination from her mother. Kitty lost her hearing at the age of four months. Because she wanted Kitty to lead a normal life, Kitty’s mother went to college to learn about teaching people who are deaf. At last Kitty’s mother started a school for those who are deaf.
Kitty’s life was anything but normal, and as an athlete, Kitty was much older than others. When
she gave up diving, she wanted danger and adventure. She raced cars, boats, and motorcycles.
In 1971 she met a motorcycle racer named Duffy Humble ton. Friendship grew between them, and they were married within a year. Kitty settled into the marriage as Duffy continued his job for movies and television. Kitty became bored. Finally, she suggested that Duffy train her to do stunts. She was so brave and strong that everyone enjoyed her stunts. Soon this 97 - pound woman was dangling from cliffs, falling out of windows, and flipping cars. She became one of the busiest stunt women in Hollywood. In 1976 Kitty O’Neil also became the fastest woman in the world in rocket - powered car that went more than 512 miles per hour.
【1】How old was Kitty when she won the first champion?
【2】Who was Kitty’s first coach?
【3】When did Kitty lose her hearing?
【4】What did Kitty do when she gave up diving?
【5】Why was Kitty able to become one of the busiest stunt women in Hollywood?

【題目】Do you or someone you know use a mobile phone?
In today’s world, many people use a mobile phone especially businessmen and businesswomen.
These people are an important part of the business world and help our economies develop. In fact in some countries even children and the elderly use mobile phones to keep in touch with family and friends.
We know how useful it is to have a mobile phone, but do we know how safe these phones are? Some scientists say that mobile phones could be a risk to our health. So,money is being given to scientific re search to find out if mobile phones may be harmful in any way.
What does the future look like?Is a hands - free phone the an swer? The idea behind hands - free sets is simple and maybe they are a safer way for people to communicate. The hands - free set has a piece in your ear and a microphone near your mouth which is con nected to a wire that goes into your phone. Some scientists think this is a much safer way to use a phone. Some scientists have proved that a mobile phone 10 centimetres from your head is far safer than if the headset is right against your ear.
Some reports say that hands - free sets have 95% less radiation(kl)exposure, while other reports say that hands - free sets expose you to more radiation.
Governments and the mobile phone industry are researching the effects, including:
● the effects of radio waves on blood pressure and the brain, such as the abilities to concentrate, remember and learn
● the connections between mobile phone use and brain cancer
● long - term effects of mobile phone use, looking at health histories of people who have used mobiles since the 1980s.
They will be looking at both current mobile phones and the new generation of 4G phones. The results from these studies will help us understand more about the world beyond mobile communications.
Wouldn’t it be strange if scientists discovered that mobile phones were too dangerous and we had to stop using them and go back to writing letter and using the normal telephone?

C. think carefully D. answer quickly

【題目】Read the passage and choose the best answer(根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,選擇最恰當(dāng)?shù)拇鸢福?/span>
Dinosaurs were the dominant land animals for 160 million years, making them one of the most successful groups of animals ever. However, all the dinosaurs that were living 65 million years ago went extinct. About 70% of all animal life on the earth died out. Scientists call it a mass extinction(大滅絕).
Having existed for 165 million years, why did dinosaurs die out? There are many different theories about why this happened. We will probably never know exactly what happened, which means that scientists will continue to disagree and come up with different dinosaur extinction theories. Here are two of them:
Ice Age Theory
Now and again, the earth cools into periods we call ice ages. As dinosaurs were thought to be cold blooded, it was hard for them to cope with such cold conditions.
Disease
It is possible that a disease spread through the dinosaur population causing their extinction.
Scientists have come up with some strange ideas but none of the theories really explains everything, so we will probably never be sure what happened.
【1】The underlined word “dominant” in the passage probably means _________.
A.biggestB.powerfulC.strangeD.special
【2】Why did the dinosaurs become extinct? ___________.
A.Dinosaurs could not suffer from cold weatherB.A disease spread through the dinosaur population
C.Other species became stronger than dinosaursD.We have not known about the truth yet
【3】Dinosaurs existed on the earth for _______ million years.
