On March 23, a single goal led China to beat South Korea 1-0 in the 2018 World Cup qualifying match(預(yù)選賽）in Changsha, Hunan province. It is only China’s second victory over South Korea in the past 32 games these years.

So who scored the winning goal? It was Chinese striker Yu Dabao, 28, who plays for Beijing Guoan in the Chinese Super League.

He was born to a soccer-mad father in Qingdao, Shandong province. As a kid, Yu also fell in love with the game. When he was young, his father took him to training on the back of his motorcycle, no matter how bad the weather was. He made such fast progress that he was accepted into the Qingdao youth team aged just 11 years old.

FIFA called Yu “China’s lucky star”, since he’s saved his team many times in important games. Modest Yu said: “As a player, you need to work hard and get prepared so that you can live up to expectations when the chance comes.”

And he has indeed. In 2014, without any commercial sponsorship (商業(yè)贊助), he joined Benfica in Portugal on a three-year deal, making him the first Chinese player to do so. “I improved my skills and also learn how to read a game,” he told FIFA.
