The California Gold Rush of 1849 attracted (吸引) people from countries all over the world. Men and women came to the place hoping to find gold and become rich. One said in his diary, “My dream is to find gold so that I can make a new life.”
People’s dreams did not always come true as they had hoped. Firstly, the trip was very hard to make. People who came from the eastern United States faced a long trip across the country. People who came from Europe found it took six months to travel by ship to San Francisco. It was a dangerous journey.
Then, when they got to California, most people found that mining (采礦) was a hard life. Few people made money by mining for gold. People would spend a short time in the mines. Then most of them went to the cities. San Francisco and Sacramento were growing cities then. It was full of excitement and easy for people to find jobs.
People who hadn’t found any gold in the mines were paid in gold for their work.
Most of the people who came to California could make a better living doing other work. After a while, some people decided to make the long trip home. Some traveled east to see more of the country. Others chose to remain in California and become part of its history.

I love my Blackberry mobile phone – it’s my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my computer, as it holds all of my writing and thoughts. However, I know there are times when I need to move away from these things and truly communicate with others.
I teach a course called History Matters in college. My goals for the class include a deep discussion of historical subjects and ideas. Because I want students to fully study the material and discuss with each other in the classroom, I have a rule – no computers, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule, some of them were not happy.
Most students think my reasons for this rule include negative experiences in the past when students made wrong use of technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. I’ve seldom had students make wrong use of technology in my classes; however, I have been e-mailed by students while they were in other teachers’ classrooms.
Some students think that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth in that at all. As I noted above, I love technology and try to keep up with it.
The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations. Interruptions (中斷) by technology often break students’ thoughts and make them depend too much on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep in themselves for ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and to make connections between the course material and the class discussion.
I have been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations (評價) show student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize with deep conversation and difficult tasks, they learn at a deeper level – a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.
I am not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I will continue my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.
56. The writer’s rule for his History Matters class is ____.

D. making right use of technology in class

Do you ever feel like you are just running from one activity to another? In school, do you rush from one subject to another?
When things happen so fast, it is easy to get lost of what you are doing or learning. It is important to stop yourself every now and then to think about what you’ve been doing or learning.
Self reflection means slowing down and calming (使平靜) yourself, including calming your mind. By being calm and going slowly, you give your brain a chance to think about what it has already received. Some people prefer to do these self reflections only in their mind. Others keep a diary or written notes. Either method works, depending on your own personal learning.
School textbooks are divided into units of study. This makes it easier for someone to begin self reflection. Look for time when you complete a unit of study in the subjects you are learning, such as math, science and art. Sometimes you know the unit is over because there is some kind of test. Use these natural breaks to stop and do self reflection.
Find a quiet place. You can even be sitting at your desk at school when you finish something early and the other students are still working. If you are going to take notes, take out paper or your reflection diary. Write down some notes on the new things that you learned in the unit. Let your mind think about the notes you have written and make some connections.
Next, think about things that you are not sure of. Maybe you learned a new way to work out a math problem, but you’re not sure when to use it. Writing down your questions will help you remember to look for answers the next time you are working with the same topic.
Self reflection is important for a successful student. If you have never taken the time to do self reflection, try it now.
53. We do self reflection to ____.
A. have more activities and subjects
B. make things happen faster and better
C. think about what we have learned
D. let our brain have a good rest
54. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Taking notes is necessary when we do self reflection.
B. It’s a good time to do self refection when we finish a unit.
C. Self reflection should be done after class in the school.
D. It’s easy for us to find answers when we do self reflection.
55. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Self Reflection in Mind or Taking Notes?
B. Self Reflection Makes You A Better Learner
C. Why Not Try These Steps of Self Reflection?
D. Find A Good Time and Place for Self Reflection
