Last July, my 12-year-old car died on California’s Santa Freeway. It was an hour before sunset, and I was 25 miles from home. I couldn’t reach anyone to pick me up, so I decided to take a bus. Not knowing the routes, I thought I’d just go east. A bus stopped. I got on and asked the driver how far she was going. “Ten more miles,” she said. There was another bus I could take from there. This clearly was going to be a long night.
I got off at the end of the route and she told me which bus to look for. After waiting 30 minutes, I began to think about a very expensive taxi ride home. Then a bus came up. There was no lighted number above its windshield (擋風(fēng)玻璃). It was out of service, but the door opened. It was the same driver.
“I just can’t leave you here,” she said. “This isn’t the nicest place. I will give you a ride home.”
“You will drive me home on the bus?” I asked, surprised.
“No. I will take you in my car,” she said. “It’s a long way,” I insisted.
“Come on,” she said. “I have nothing else to do.”
As we drove from the station in the car, she began telling me a story. A few days earlier, her brother had run out of gas. A good man picked him up, took him to a service station and then back to his car. “I’m just passing the favor (善意的行為) along.” she said.
When I offered her money as a thank-you, she wouldn’t accept. “Just do something nice for somebody. Pass it along.” she said.

A fish that lives in America can live out of water for months at a time.
The Mangrove Rivulus, a kind of little fish, lives in small pools of water. When their living place dries up (干涸), they live on the land, said Scott Taylor, a researcher in Florida.
The fish can grow as large as three inches. They group together and take in air through their skin before they can find water again.
The new scientific discovery (發(fā)現(xiàn)) came during a trip.
“We were travelling for fun and one day I kicked over a log (圓木) and the fish came out.” Taylor told reporters by telephone. He said he would make his study on the fish known to the public in an American magazine early next year.
In lab (實(shí)驗(yàn)室) tests, Taylor said he found the fish can live up to 66 days out of water without eating.
Some other fish can live out of water for a short time. The walking catfish found in Southeast Asia can stay on land for hours at a time, while lungfish (肺魚) found in Australia, Africa and South America can live out of water, but only in a not active (活潑的) way. But no other known fish can be out of water as long as the Mangrove Rivulus and keep active, said Patricia Wright, a biologist (生物學(xué)家) at a Canadian University.
More studies of the fish may tell how animals changed over time.

A. lives on land in Africa B. can live out of water for months

2 Who will write a report on Mangrove Rivulus for a magazine?
A. Scott Taylor. B. Some reporters.
C. Patricia Wright. D. Scientists from Europe (歐洲).
3 What can we say about the discovery of Mangrove Rivulus?
A. It was made by Scott Taylor, an Australian researcher.
B. It has been reported in magazines all over the world.
C. It is the most important scientific discovery.
D. It was made by a researcher while travelling.
