Yellow, orange, red and green- tree leaves make autumn a colourful time! Who paints all these colours? It is the leaves themselves. Inside a leaf, there are millions of little colourbags, they are green, yellow and orange. The green ones are called chlorophyll(葉綠素).The yellow ones are called xanthophylls(葉黃素). The orange ones are called carotene(胡蘿卜素).

In summer, the green chlorophyll is very, very busy. It makes food for the trees. It catches sunlight to change water and carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)into sugar. This sugar is the food for ther tree. It is so busy that it covers up all of the other colours in the leaf.

When the weather grows colder in autumn, there is less light and water for trees. The trees will have a rest to get ready for winter. They've made enough food in summer! The leaves no longer need water to make food. Without the water, the green chlorophyll starts to go away. The other colours in the leaf-the yellow xanthophylls and orange carotene come out. So the leaves don't reallyturna certain colour. They just lose their green !

But how about the red, purple and green leaves?

The leaves look red or purple because they have some sugar in them. Theystealsome food from the tree! The green leaves are from the evergreen trees (常綠樹). The evergreen trees stay green all year long. Their leaves don't lose water in winter.

Read the passage then choose True(T) or false (F).

(1) The tree leaves have the following colourbags, such as green, yellow and orange except red.

( )

(2) In summer, the green chlorophyll works hard for the tree leaves.

( )

(3) In autumn, the tree leaves turn yellow or orange because the green chlorophyll stops working and goes away.

( )

(4) Tree leaves no longer make food in summer.

( )

(5) We can infer(推斷)from the article that trees can clean the air.

In general(一般來說)people talk about two groups of colourswarm colours and cool colours. Scientists think that there are also two groups of peoplepeople who prefer(更喜歡)warm colours and people who prefer cool colours.

The warm colours are red, orange and yellow. Where there are warm colours and a lot of light, people usually want to be active(積極的). People think that red is exciting, sociable(善交際的)people, those who like to be with others like red. The cool colours are green, blue and purple. These colours unlike warm colours, are relaxing. Where there are cool colours, people are usually quiet. People who like to spend time alone often prefer blue.

Red may be exciting but one scientist says that time seems to pass more slowly in a room with warm colours than in a room with cool colours. He suggested(建議)that a warm colour such as red or orange, is a good colour for a living room or a restaurant. People who are relaxing or eating don't want time to pass quickly. Cool colours are better for offices as the people who work there want time to pass quickly. Scientists don't know why people think some colours are warm and other colours are cool. However, almost everyone agrees that warm colours remind(使想起)people of warm days and cool colours remind them of cool days. Because in the north the sun is low during winter, the sunlight appears quite blue. And the sun is higher during summer, the hot summer sunlight appears yellow.

(1) When we talk about two groups of people, we mean those that like warm colours and like cool colours.

( )

(2) The people who like warm colours are very hard to get on with others.

Factories often make the air in big cities very dirty. Millions of tons of waste and poisonous (有毒)gases(氣)are sent into the air with smoke. Oil is burnt in cars, trucks and buses. They produce waste gases almost as harmful as the gases from factories. In big cities during cold winter months, many old people die from the polluted air. In places around big factories, the bad air kills trees and vegetables.

Another kind of polltion is noise. Very loud noises can make people ill, hurt their ears, or even drive them mad(發(fā)瘋的). Houses near the airports sometimes have their windows broken by the noise of jet planes(噴氣式飛機)passing overhead.

Man is fighting a battle(戰(zhàn)爭)against pollution. The battle won't be won until everyone knows how serious the danger is, and does something to stop it.

At table, when the hostess picks up her napkin, you may pick up yours and put it on your legs.

If a servant passes food around, he will pass the dish to you on your left hand so that you can easily serve yourself with your fight hand. Never serve yourself while the dish is on your right, it is then the turn of your neighbor on the fight.

Do not reach across the table or in front of someone to get something--that is not polite. Ask him or her to pass it to you.

There are things in the middle of the table, such as bread, butter, and candies. You shouldn't take any until the hostess tells the servant to pass them to you.
