　　Mr．Williams lives in a nice house in the country with his wife．From Monday to Friday each week he works in a factory in a big town but he is free on Saturdays and Sundays．He has got a nice garden round his house, and he often works in it on Saturdays and Sundays, because he likes flowers and en-joys working with his hands．A lot of Englishmen work in their gardens on Saturdays and Sundays, and during their holidays．

　　Last Saturday, Mr．Williams put some old clothes on after his breakfast and began digging in his garden．He dug for half an hour, and then he found something on the ground neat his feet．He looked at it．It was five pence(便士)．He put it in one of his pocket and began digging again．

　　Then he found another five pence on the ground and put that in his pocket too．He was very happy now．He stopped digging for a minute and shouted to his wife,“Elizabeth, come quickly．Someone's hidden a lot of money in our garden, and I'm finding it．”

　　His wife stopped cooking the lunch and ran out into the garden．She was very happy and said,“A thief(賊)stole a lot of money from one of the banks near here a few weeks ago．The police caught him, but they did not find any of the money．Did the thief bring it here and hide it in our garden?”

　　Mr．Williams began looking for more money in the ground, but then he felt something cold in his trousers．It ran down one of his legs and it was like cold water．Mr．Williams put his hand down quickly and five pence fell into it．He had a hole in his pocket．

　　There was once a girl named Jafilah．Her mother had died and she lived with her grandmother．Her grandmother loved her very much and she would not let her go and play with the other girls．She was very beautiful and Jafil loved her very much and wanted to marry(娶)her．Jafil was the son of her father's brother．

　　There were six other girls in the village．Those other girls were not as beautiful as Jafilah, and they were angry with her because her grandmother would not let her come and play with them or go to the forest with them to bring wood．

　　One day the six girls went to Jafilah's grandmother and said,“Let Jafilah come out with us to get wood from the forest this afternoon．She has never been with us．Soon she will be married, and when she married she will never be able to come with us”．

　　The grandmother said,“I must ask Jafilah's grandfather．If he says she may go with you, she may go．”

　　So the grandmother asked the grandfather, and the grandfather looked at the girls and said,“They are big strong girls．They will take good care of her．Let her go．”

　　Now the six girls did not want to be friends with Jafilah．They were angry with her．They wanted to hurt her．

　　Once there was something wrong with a machine in a factory．The workers could do nothing but turn to a German engineer for help, who drew a line on it and then said,“Take off the part where the line is and change it for a new one．”The machine, with a new line on began running well again．The engineer then asked for ＄30,000 for what he had done．The following were what he wrote on a bill,“The new part only costs one dollar, and knowing where the problem with the machine costs 29,999．”

　　One dollar for changing a new part sounds reasonable but 29,999 dollars is the value of wisdom and knowledge．

　　We often think of the future．We often wonder what the world will be like in a hundred years' time．

　　In the area of space travel, perhaps a permanent(永久性的)station on the moon will have been set up．Perhaps people will be able to visit the moon as tourists．Cheap rockets for space travel will have been developed, permitting(容許)long journeys throughout the solar system(太陽系)．When that day comes, people will be taking vacations in space and visiting other planets．

　　Great progress will have been made in medicine, too．Perhaps a cure(對策)will have been discovered for cancer(癌癥)．Pollution is a problem we must solve．In a hundred years' time it will have been controlled．

　　All the world will have been developed－even Antarctica．There will be large cities in Antarctica．We already have supersonic(超音速的)flight, but in a hundred years' time, we will have super-sonic land travel as well．

　　We will have used up most of the earth's land to build our cities, so floating(飄浮的)cities will have been built．The Japanese already have plans for cities of this kind．And there will be cities under the sea．The first of these will have been completed．

　　The police do many things for us．They help keep our things and us safe．They help keep cars moving safely．They take care of people who are hurt．Then they see these people get to a doctor．

　　The police go around town to see that everything is all right．They get around town in many ways．Some of them walk or go by car．In some big cities, some of the police ride on horses．It is strange to see these animals in the street．

　　As they go around town, the police help people．Sometimes they find lost children．They take the children home．If the police see a fight, they put an end to it right away．Sometimes people will ask the police how to get to a place in town．The police can always tell the people which way to go．They know all the streets and roads well．

　　Some police stand at crossings．They tell the cars when to go and when to stop．They make sure that the cars do not go too fast．They help children cross the street．They also help people who can't walk too well．

　　Without the police, our streets would not be safe．Cars might go too fast and hurt people．Lost people might never be found．The police do a good job．We need them．And we should thank them for a job well done．

　　One day, many years ago, when I was working as a psychologist(心理學家)in England, David was brought into my office．His face was pale and he stared at his feet．

　　David had lost his father when he was two years old and had lived with his mother and grandfather ever since．But the year before he turned 13, his grandfather died and his mother was killed in a car accident．His teacher told me that he refused to talk to others from then on．How could I help him?

　　David didn't say a word．As he was about to leave, I put my hand on his shoulder．‘Come back next week if you like,’I said．

　　He came, and I suggested we play a game of chess．He nodded．After that we played chess every Wednesday afternoon－in complete silence．Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed．It seemed as if he enjoyed my company．But why didn't he even look at me?‘Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with,’I thought．

　　Months later, when I was staring at his head, he suddenly looked up at me．‘It's your turn,’he Said．After that day, David started talking．He finally got friends in school and he even joined a bicycle club．He wrote to me a few times．Now he has really started to live his life．

　　Maybe I gave David something．But I learned a lot from him．I learned how time makes it possible to overcome(克服)what seems to be so painful．David showed me how one－without a word－can reach out to another person．All it takes is a shoulder to cry on, a friendly touch and an ear that listens．

　　Detective stories are popular everywhere, and some of the world's best-telling writers have written detective stories．They have also often been women．The stories of Agatha Christie, for example, have been translated into most languages, and so have those of Ruth Rendell．

　　Some people think that the Sherlock Holmes stories, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, were the first detective stories ever written．In fact, the first such story was published much earlier than the first Sherlock Holmes story, in 1841．It was written by the American writer Edgar Allan Poe and called The Murders in the Rue Morgue．The fictional detective was a Frenchman, Auguste Dupin, and the story was set in France．This was because at that time only in France were there such people as private detectives．

　　The first detective novel－long story－was not published until 1856．It was called Recollections of a Detective Police Officer by Waters．Although it pretended to be a true life story of a real police officer called‘Waters’, it was wholly fiction and was written by William Russell．

　　The first fictional detective to appear in a novel－though the novel itself was not a detective story－was Inspector Bucket in Charles Dicken's novel, Bleak House．The first detective novel to be written by a writer who was already famous for other kinds of novel writhing was The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins．The detective in this novel was called Sergeant Cuff and was based on a well-known real life detective of the time, Superintendent Foley．

　　Wilkie Collins also created the first woman detective in his novel, No Name, though she was not an important character in the book．The first detective novel to have a female detective as the main character was The Recollections of a Lady Detective by Anon．The word‘Anon’is short for‘anonymous’which means‘unnamed’, so we do not know who wrote this noel．

　　The first really successful female writer of detective fiction was an American, Anna Katherine Green．By the time she died in 1935, she had written over 30 detective novels．Sadly, no one reads her works today and she is almost wholly forgotten．

　　The Internet is becoming important in our life．How much do you know about it?

　　The Internet is a large, worldwide collection of computer networks．A network is a small group of computers put together．The Internet is many different networks from all over the world．These networks are called the Internet．Once you have learned to use the Internet, you can have a lot of interest in the World Wide Web．

　　What is the World Wide Web?

　　The World Wide Web has been the most popular development of the Internet．The Web is like a big electronic book with millions of pages．These pages are called homepages．

　　You can find information about almost anything in the world on these pages．For example, you can use the Internet instead of a library to find information for your homework．You can also find information about your favourite sport or film star, talk to your friends of even do some shopping on the pages．Most pages have words, pictures and even sound or music．

　　What is e-mail?

　　Electronic mail(e-mail)is a way of sending messages to other people．It’s much quicker and cheaper than sending a letter．

　　If you want to use e-mail, you must have an e-mail address．This address must have letters and dots and an@(meaningat)．This is what an address looks like：emily @ star．net．Write a message across the Internet．People don’t need to use stamps, envelopes or go to the post office since the invention of the Internet．Quick, easy and interesting-that’s the Internet!
