Time to lose weight
Zhou Xiang, at Shijiazhuang No.4 Middle School, Hebei, is 1.73 metres tall, but weighs 80 kilograms. The 14-year-old Junior 3 boy is the biggest in his class.
He always felt good when people called him‘Hercules(大力士)’.But he doesn't feel so good about being big any more.
Why is that? Because of a new rule for Junior 3 students taking the High School Entrance Examination in late June.
There will be a fitness test on May 9.On the new test, students who are too heavy or too light only get one point out of two.
Tian Jingbo at the Shijiazhuang Education Bureau(教育局)said he hopes this will make students stronger and healthier.‘It can make students eat healthily and exercise more,’Tian said.
Zhou is too heavy. The education bureau says his weight should be from 61.6 to 69.9 kilograms.
Zhou is afraid his weight could be a big problem.‘If I lose one point, I probably will miss the best high school,’he said.
To get two points on the test, Zhou decided to lose 10 kilograms in two months. For the first few days, he only had a piece of bread and some milk for breakfast.
He exercises more, but that only makes him want to eat more.He said he was hungry all the time.‘When I finish the exam, I'm going to eat a horse,’he said.
Zhou's class has seven other students either too fat or too thin for the test.Others have the right weight now but worry that their weight will change in two months.
Almost all of them have scales(秤)at home to see what they weigh.
At Shijiazhuang Children's Hospital, Li Hongling, a doctor, said about 60 or 70 per cent would get the two points.
She did a study of 2,880 middle school students in 2002 and found that 16 per cent were overweight.
Li said the only good way to lose weight is to live a healthy life:eat less food, watch less TV and play more sports.
‘Losing weight too quickly could be bad for your health,’Li said.
