The summer vacation is over. It's true that time always flies fast. During the vacation, the weather was hot and I could not do much work, but I lived happily.

Because the afternoon was hot, I did my work in the morning. I used to get up at 6:30. and take a walk in the garden for half an hour. After breakfast, I began reading English and Chinese and did some exercises in math. Those took me three hours or more. I worked quite hard and made good progress.

I spent the afternoon outside. I went to swim and it was fun. I would not go home until it was about five or six o'clock. Sometimes a friend of mine would come to see me and we would spend some hours listening to music.

Paul answered,“Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas.”The boy was surprised. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn't cost you anything? Boy, I wish…” He hesitated.

Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the boy said surprised Paul greatly.

“I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.” Paul looked at the boy in surprise, then he said again, “Would you like to take a ride in my car?”

“Oh yes, I' d love that.”

After a short ride, the boy turned, and with his eyes shining, said, “Paul, would you mind driving in front of my house?”

Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big car. But Paul was wrong again. “Will you stop where those two steps are?” the boy asked.

He ran up to the steps. Then in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled(殘疾的) brother. He sat him down on the step and pointed to the car.

“There it is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn't cost him a cent. And some day I'm going to give you one just like it…then you can see for yourself all the nice things in the Christmas windows that I've been trying to tell you about.”

Have you ever heard the saying “If you want a friend, be one”?

Here is how one new teacher made friends with the girls and boys in her class on the first day of school. As the bell rang, the teacher smiled at each girl and boy. Laptop computers(便攜式計算機) are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 15,000 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $ 10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees-just anywhere!

Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials also are testing laptop programs at other universities, too.

At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff(全體教工) use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. The Great Fire of London started in the very early hours of 2 September, 1666. In four days it destroyed(破壞) more than three quarters of the old city, where most of the houses were wooden and close together. One hundred thousand people became homeless, but only a few lost their lives.

The fire started on Sunday morning in the house of King's Baker in Pudding Lane. The baker, with his wife and family, was able to get out through a window in the roof. A strong wind flew the fire from the bakery(面包房) into a small hotel next door. Then it spread(展開) quickly into Thames Street. That was the beginning.

By eight o'clock 300 houses were on fire. On Monday nearly a kilometer of the city was burning along the river Thames. Tuesday was the worst day. The fire destroyed many wellknown buildings, old St Paul's and the Guildhall among them.

Samuel Pepys, the famous writer, wrote about the fire. People threw their things into the river. Many poor people stayed in their houses until the last moment. Birds fell out of the air because of the heat.

The fire stopped only when the King finally ordered people to destroy hundreds of buildings in the paths(小路) of the fire. With nothing left to burn, the fire became weak and finally died out.

After the fire, Christopher Wren, the architect(建筑師), wanted a city with wider streets and fine new houses of stone. In fact the streets are still narrow, but he did build more than 50 churches, among them the new St Paul's.

The fire caused great pain and loss, but after it London was a better place: a city for the future and not just of the past.
