Thanksgiving Day is a very special day for people in the United States. They celebrate it on the last Thursday in November. Canadians also celebrate Thanksgiving Day, but they do it on the second Monday of October. In Britain, where this festival is called ‘Harvest Festival’, people celebrate it earlier in the year, in September.
A harvest is the fruit you take from the trees and the crops you take from the ground. In North America and Britain, harvest time for most fruit and crops is in the autumn. In these countries and other Christian places, people give thanks to God(上帝) on a special day of the year. They thank Cod for the good things that have happened during the year and for the good harvest they have had. People usually take small boxes of fruit, flowers, and vegetables to their churches to show their thanks.
The first thanksgiving service(儀式) in North America took place on December 4th, 1619 when 38 English people arrived in America to make their home in the new country. They held this service not to thank God for the harvest, but to thank God for their safe journey. The next. year; many more English people arrived. They had a bad winter, but fortunately the harvest was good. They decided to celebrate it with a big meal, They shot and killed small animals to eat and cooked everything outside on large fires. About 90 Indians; also came to the meal. Everyone ate at tables outside their houses and played games together. The festival lasted three days.
A Thanksgiving Day celebration was held every year for a long time, but not always on the same day of the year. Then, in 1789, President George Washington named November 26th as the Day of Thanksgiving. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln changed the date, and said that the last Thursday in November should be Thanksgiving Day.
Nowadays, North Americans around the world get together with their families on this, day to eat good food and have a happy time.
1.Is Thanksgiving Day celebrated on the same day in North American countries?
2.When did the first thanksgiving service take place in North America?
3.Who made the last Thursday in November Thanksgiving Day in the USA?
4.What does the word “fortunately” mean in Chinese?

Elephants are the largest living animals on land. More than 500 different kinds of elephants were found on earth over the last 55 million years. Only two kinds are still alive today:the African Elephant and the Asian (or Indian) Elephant. These elephants can only be found in hot places. The older kinds, which lived a long time ago, lived in colder places. An example is the mammoths(猛犸象)-the largest hairy elephants.
Mammoths were about the size of the largest living elephant, which is about 7 tons(噸). Unlike the elephants today, mammoths had black or dark brown hairs covering their bodies. All the mammoths had tusks(象牙). We can tell this from their fossil teeth.
Scientists found out about most of the extinct(滅絕的) animals by studying the fossils, such as their bones(骨頭) and teeth that have been found. However, mammoths are quite different.
During the Ice Age, mammoths died and were covered deeply in the ice. The ice kept them well. While many animals only left behind bones and teeth, scientists found the whole body of the mammoth. Because the whole mammoth has been kept well, scientists can see even the hair, the tusks and the whole body.
1.What kinds of elephants can be found on earth today?
_____________________________________________
2.Describe two features(特征) that can only be found in the extinct mammoths but not the living elephants.

Being safe at school and in your everyday life needs knowledge. If you remember the following information, your life will be much safer.
●Always notice the environment around you. You shouldn't walk alone outside. Make sure where the public phones are. If anything dangerous happens, you can find them quickly.
●Don't use earphones(耳機(jī)) when running in the schoolyard or on the street. You will keep yourself from the outside world and can be easily surprised.
●School bags should be carried towards the front of your body instead of putting them on your back. When buses are crowded, it is easy enough for thieves to steal the things in your bags on your back.
●If you are followed by a stranger, cross the street and go in the other direction(方向), let the stranger know that you know he or she is there. Next, go and get help from others if it is necessary. Don't go home directly. You are safer on the street than you are in your home or in a lift.
●If you have to take a bus to a place far away, try to get to the stop a few minutes before the buses leave. This prevents a stranger from studying you. On buses, don't sit alone, sit behind the driver or with friends. Don't sleep.
●Don't play with matches(火柴) or candles, because it may cause fire. If your house catches fire and you have to escape through smoke, move on your hands and knees with your head 30 to 60 centimetres(厘米) above the floor. Please remember there is cleaner, cooler air near the floor during the fire.

Look people in the eye when you talk to them. That way, they'll find it easier to talk to you, or people may think you're not interested in them and may stop being interested in you.
Be a good listener. Let people talk about themselves before talking about “me, me, me”. Ask lots of questions. Show an interest in their answers.

Dear Sir or Madam,
Last Thursday, I travelled on the 8:40 a.m. train from Glasgow to London King's Cross and I was very unhappy with the service provided by your company(公司).
The train was forty minutes late leaving Glasgow, and although the guard apologized, we were not given any reasons for the delay(誤點(diǎn)). We then had further delays when the train crew(乘務(wù)組人員) changed at Preston and had to wait another thirty minutes. As a result, I missed my flight from London Healthrow to Frankfurt and had to wait for several hours.
What's more, the service on the train was also very poor. The trip takes over five hours, unluckily, there was no restaurant car on the train and only a bar with soft drinks. Worst of all, the air conditioning broke down half-way through the trip and it got hotter and hotter in the train. However, there was no apology for this, and before we reached King's Cross, the temperature was over 40℃.
In view of the poor service, I feet I am entitled to compensation(有權(quán)索賠).
I took forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
David Robertson

During the day we work and play, and at night we sleep. Our bodies rest while we sleep. In the morning we are ready to work and play again. While we are asleep, our bodies grow fast. Children who are tired usually need more sleep. We can get our lessons better and we feel better, too, when we have plenty of rest. Boys and girls who are nine years old need ten hours of sleep every night. Our bodies need plenty of air when we sleep. If we do not get enough fresh air, we'll feel tired when we wake up. While in bed we must not cover our heads. If we do, our lungs (肺)will not get enough fresh air. If we open our windows at night, we can have plenty of fresh air.
Cool air is better than warm air. Boys and girls who want to grow and be strong must get plenty of sleep.

Dear Linda,
I have been in England three months now. I hope you don't think I've forgotten you. There have been so many places to see and so many things to do that I've not had much time for writing letters.
I shall soon be starting my studies at King's College. So far I've been learning about England and British ways of living. I won't tell you about London. There are plenty of books you can read and plenty of pictures you can look at. I'm sure you'll be more interested to know what I think about the life here.
I find some of the customs (風(fēng)俗) new and interesting. People here do not shake hands as much as we do in Europe. During the first few weeks I was often surprised because people did not put out their hands when I met them. Men raise (抬起) their hats to women but not to each other.
