Audrey is a Chinese-American student. She has found many value differences between Chinese and Americans.

Some American students think that “B” is a gift while Chinese students think that “B” is terrible.

New rules and behavior standards(行為規(guī)范) for middle school students came out in March. Middle schools are going to use a new way to decide who the top students are. The best students won’t only have high marks. They will also be kids who don’t dye(染) their hair. The following are some of the new rules.
Tell the truth. Have you ever copied someone else’s work on an exam? Don’t do it again! That’s not something an honest student should do. If you have played computer games for two hours in your room, don’t tell your parents you have done homework.
Do more at school. Good students love animals and care for other people. April is Bird-loving month in China. Is your school doing anything to celebrate? You should join! In that way, you can learn more about animals and how to protect them. When more people work together, it makes it more fun for everyone.
Have you ever quarreled with your teammates when your basketball team lost? Only working together can make your team stronger. Be friendly to the people you are with. Try to think of others, not only yourself.
Be open to new ideas. Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon? Maybe you’ll discover Earth Ⅱ some day. Don’t look down on new ideas. Everyone’s ideas are important. You should welcome them, because new ideas make life better for everyone.
Protect yourself. Has someone ever taken money from one of your classmates? Don’t let it happen to you. If you have to go home late, you should let your parents know.
Use the Internet carefully. The Internet can be very useful for your studies. But some things on the Internet aren’t for kids, so try to look at web pages that are good for you. You can use the web for fun or homework. Can’t you find any good websites for children? Here are some: Http:// kids.eastday.com, Http://www. chinakids. net. com, http ://www. cycnet.com.

Some people remember the things by writing notes to themselves. Then they leave the notes in obvious(明顯的) places, such as on the table or on the floor in the middle of the living room. I don’t think I like to write notes to myself. Most of the time I lose them or forget to look at them until it’s too late. I prefer to use an alarm clock to tell me what I should do. I have ten alarm clocks in my house. They could tell me about things. For example, if I have to make a telephone call at a certain time, I’ll set an alarm clock to go off a few minutes early and put the clock by the telephone. Or if I want to watch a certain television program, I’ll set an alarm clock at the right time and put the clock on top of the TV set. I can remember almost anything if I use my clocks. However, sometimes an alarm clock goes off and I don’t know what it means. I always remember setting it, but I do not know why I set it. If the clock is by the telephone, I know I may have set it to tell me to call someone, but I can’t be sure. I might have set it to tell myself that somebody was to call me at a certain time

Car accidents happen everywhere every day and are the main cause of injury in the United States. In order to control the increasing(增長(zhǎng)) accidents, many states have passed tough laws. Also, car manufacturers(制造商) have been trying to make safer cars to save lives.
However, as there are more and more cars and drivers on the road, these safety measure (安全措施)are not enough to stop the increasing car accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (管理部門)reports that a car accident happens every 10 seconds in the United States.
Car accidents may be caused by different reasons. Some accidents are caused by driver’s tiredness and illness or drunk driving. Some may be caused by speeding or running a red light. When this happens, by the time the driver realizes what has happened, it is usually too late. As for ages, young drivers usually have enough experience while elderly drivers of react slowly. Mechanical defects (機(jī)械毛。﹕uch as a broken brake(剎車) are another cause of car accidents. Poor road and weather conditions can also be a cause.
Talking about different causes of car accidents can help us know what precautions(預(yù)防措施) to take beforehand. We should tell our friends or family members not to drive in poor health or after drinking wine. We should tell teenager drivers to be careful with road and weather conditions and let elderly friends understand their driving limitation(局限性)。Besides, we should have our car checked regularly(規(guī)律地). Once there were two crows (烏鴉)whose opinions(觀點(diǎn)) were always opposite.
One day, one of the crows said to the other, “ You should realize, of course, that I can fly much higher than you.”
“ Don’t be ridiculous (荒謬的).” the other crow said. “ Everyone knows that I can fly much higher than you.”
“No, you can’t” the first crow said.
“Yes, I can” the second crow replied, and the argument went on and on.
At last they decided to have a contest to solve the argument.

NOT all memories are sweet. Some people -- all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars (傷痕).
Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or possibly erase, the effect of painful memories.
In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body producing chemicals that fix memories in the brain (大腦). So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased.
The research has caused a great deal of discussion. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it.
Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.
"Some memories can destroy people's lives. They come back to you when you don't want to have them in a daydream or nightmare (噩夢(mèng)). They usually come with very painful emotions," said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. "This could relieve a lot of that suffering."
But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity (特質(zhì)). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.
"All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are. I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out, "said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist

I usually get up at 5:00. I make coffee, go to my desk and work. When my boys get up, I’m theirs. I follow the min to the kitchen and make them breakfast. While they’re eating, I make their lunch, pick out their school clothes and get the little one dressed.
My wife takes them to school. I bring them home. I am not the only father at the school gate. The boys and I walk the 12 blocks home unless the weather is terrible. Then we take the subway. I remind them of looking out, like an animal looking after their babies.
At home, they play on the computer and the little one will draw, sometimes for hours. When their mother comes home, they run to her. She has been in the official day and tired, but her attention is all on them.
I have made dinner. We sit down and eat together. After they do their homework, Karen takes them to bed. I listen to the noise of the boys’ and their mother’s voice.
One afternoon when we were on the way home from school, the boys and I stopped at the clothing store. The saleswoman looked at the boys and said to me in a low voice, “You’re Mr. Mom, aren’t you?” I felt very angry. I’m not Mr. Mom. That’s not how I look at myself.
