Jack, a middle school student, used to work hard at all his lessons. He usually got up earliest and
went to bed latest of the family. He hardly ever did outdoor activities. His parents worried about his
health. They asked him to get relaxed by watching TV or playing sports, but he wouldn't follow them.
Finally, one day he fell ill and had to stay in hospital for several weeks. Now Jack is in poor health.
Though he goes to school every day, he doesn't do so well in his studies as before.
From Jack's story, we can see that health is very important. If you become sick, you may not go
on with your education, and then you can't make your dreams come true. On the other hand, if you are
strong, you can enjoy yourselves to do everything well.
Then how should you keep fit? First, you should spend some time exercising every day to keep fit.
Second, you must go to bed and get up early. If you get up early, you can breathe fresh air (呼吸新
鮮空氣) and make your heads cleverer. In a word, health is no less important than working hard for
us. So we should, on the one hand, work hard, and on the other hand, pay much attention to our health.

Dear Tommy,
I'm writing to you on your third birthday. I want to tell you something about your grandma's time. I
was born sixty-eight years ago in a small village.
Transportation used to be a big problem. When we traveled from village to village, we used to walk
or ride horses.
Shopping was not an easy job, either. There were no supermarkets in the neighborhood. We used
to grow most of our own food: rice and vegetables. We kept things cool in a special underground room.
The biggest difference is that you have electricity (電). We didn't have electricity until very late in
our small village. We didn't have any televisions of course. We used to perform our local (地方的) music and enjoy it very much.
Life used to be very hard, but I was not upset. I would like you to know about the old days and be
happy about what you have when you grow up. Remember, feeling good about life is the key to happiness.

Dear Mr. Know,

Dear Mary,
My son, Trey, who is nine years old, also lost his vision (視力) suddenly. I think one of the most important things
for you to  do  is  to find other blind kids of    your son's   age in your area.    He will   need someone   to talk   to   that
understands his situation and can give him some advice. Sometimes, other kids treat your son differently, and it takes
time, experience, and patience to learn the best ways of dealing with this. But if your son had another successful, blind
teenager to talk to, that person could tell him how they dealt with the same situations. Also, often talk to the doctor so
that they can show your son how to get around safely.   Learning to use assistant technology(輔助技術(shù)) and Braille
(盲人用的點(diǎn)字法) are also extremely important. Where I live, we have a place called Envision that offers these
services. Check around for something similar in your area. I hope I have been of some help.

Now I'm studying in the US, I find there are some differences between schools in the US and in
Vietnam.
One big difference is the clothes students wear at school and how they look. In my country, all the
students should wear uniforms when they go to school. Boys aren't allowed to have long hair. Girls aren't
allowed to have long or colored nails (指甲).
Another difference is about the rules for parents. In Vietnam, when we begin a new year, our parents
have to go to a meeting in our class. If they don't go to that meeting, their children won't have a grade or
a report card from school.
However, in the US, there aren't such strict rules above.
In Vietnam, a class is only 45 minutes and we have only five classes each weekday. When the bell
rings, all the students just sit in their classroom. They can't move to a different room, but students can in
the US.
In Vietnam, students can't go to work because they can't find a job if they're under 18. But in the
US, many students work after school. This helps them make money. More importantly, this helps them
become more independent. They're able to do things by themselves in their own way, without asking
other people for help.
1. Which country is the writer's hometown?
A. America.
B. The UK.
C. China.
D. Vietnam.
2. What are the girl students allowed to in the writer's country?
A. To have long nails.
B. To color their nails.
C. To grow their hair long.
D. To wears their own clothes.
3. What does the underlined word "independent" mean in Chinese?
A. 勇敢的
B. 獨(dú)立的
C. 依賴的
D. 不禮貌的
4. Which is TRUE about the Vietnamese students according to the passage?
A. They have twenty-five classes a week.
B. They can design their school uniforms.
C. They don't get a report card from school.
D. They can find a job whenever they want.
5. From the passage, we can learn that _____.
A. in Vietnam, the students must sit quietly and can't move around in class
B. the US students don't have such strict rules as the Vietnamese students
C. at the end of a school year, parents in Vietnam have to go to a parents' meeting

people become very nervous when it's time to take a test.
It's natural to feel some stress about taking
tests. Here are some tips for taking tests.
Be sure you've studied well. That will help you feel sure about your answers in the test. (2). 考試之前睡眠要充足。 Your memory will be much better if you've had enough rest. In a scientific study, people
