A Good Friend,a Second Self

That afternoon my friend Kevin and I talked 2about the play. Although Kevin hadn't been 3 for a part on stage, his job with the set crew was important to the success of the play. I told him I was a little 4 because I had a lot of lines to memorize.

"You can do it," he said. I knew I could 5him:we had been friends since the third grade, and we 6 a good team.

Preparations for the play moved at a rapid pace. While working hard with the set crew,Kevin 7 spent hours helping me learn my lines. He often said my lines with me by silently moving his lips. We 8 that he could probably play my part as well as I could.

Three days before the 9 night, everything was ready for the performance. But when I woke up 10 a fever and sore throat on the day of the play, the entire production came to a sudden 11 Everyone in the drama department was worried, 12 there was no way I could perform. The play was 13 to open in fewer than six hours, and we had no time to cancel. I tried to think of a way to 14 . Then it hit me―Kevin knew the 15 as well as I did. I called Mrs. Dermitt to give her my 16 . Within a few short hours, Kevin stood on stage in costume and make-up. The amusing lines he had 17 with me so many times made the crowd laugh and cheer.

1. A根據(jù)上文的"when I heard my name called for the leading role in our high school play"中的role可知,該處應(yīng)選part表"角色"。

He often said my lines with me by silently moving his lips."

3. B choose sb. for/as…"

4. C依據(jù)下文的"because I had a lot of lines to memorize"可知,作者要記很多的臺詞,應(yīng)該會覺得"緊張"。

5. A count on"指望,依賴""end to"趨于";talk with"與某人談話";agree with"同意某人說的話"。

7. A由上文的"working hard with the set crew" 可知,朋友除了忙劇組的工作外,還花大量的時間幫我記臺詞。

9. C依據(jù)下文”everything was ready for the performance"可知,一切都準(zhǔn)備好了,就等待

開演。

11. C come to a stop表"停止;終止"。而come to an end則表示"結(jié)束",常表某事情發(fā)生了之后要結(jié)束。

12. A后文的"there was no way I could per?form"與前文大家都很著急之間是因果關(guān)系,for在這里引導(dǎo)原因狀語從句,表顯而易見的原因。

be due to表"按照預(yù)先安排做某事"。

The medical world is gradually realizing that the quality of the environment in hospitals may play a significant role in the process of recovery from illness.

As part of a nationwide effort in Britain to bring art out of the galleries(畫廊)and into pub?lic places, some of the country's most gifted artists have been called in to change older hospitals and to soften the hard edges of modern buildings. Of the 2 , 500 National Health Service hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have significant collections of modern art in corridors(走道),waiting areas and treatment rooms.

These recent initiatives(new plans) owe a great deal to one artist,Peter Senior, who set up his studio at a Manchester Hospital in Northeastern England during the early 1970s. He felt the artist had lost his place in modern society, and that art should be enjoyed by a wider audience.

A common hospital waiting room might have as many as 5 ,000 visitors each week. What a better place to hold regular exhibitions of art and paintings,in the outpatients waiting area of the Manchester Royal Hospital in 1975. Believed to be Britain's first hospital artist,Senior was so much in demand that he was soon joined by a team of six young art school graduations.

The effect is striking. Now in the corridors and waiting rooms, the visitor experiences a full view of fresh colors, playful images and restful courtyard.

The quality of the environment may reduce the need for expense when a patient is recovering from an illness. A study has shown that patients who had a view onto a garden nee?ded half the number of strong painkillers compared with patients who had no view at all or only a brick wall to look at.

C.     patients should be encouraged to learn painting

D.     artists can not find their positions in modern society

(   ) 8. What does the last paragraph suggest?
