16.Do you have bright ideas for inventions that change society or at least make life easier for somebody?Perhaps we all do sometimes, but we don't often make the idea a reality.Recently,in Britain, there was a competition (比賽) called Britain Designers for Tomorrow, which encouraged young people to carry out their bright ideas. There were two groups in the competition:Group One was for school children under 16; Group Two was for school children over 16.And there were eleven prize winners altogether.
Neil Hunt, one of the prize winners, was called"Sunshine Superman"by one newspaper carrying his design. It's important when people study to record sunshine accurately (準(zhǔn)確地).We need to know how many hours of sunshine we have and how strong it is.Most sunshine recorders only record direct sunlight.Neil's is more accurate and this is very important for research into the way of using solar power. With his prize $100,Neil plans to carry on inventing.
You can do so much with cartoons.Look at Simon West's idea for animated(動(dòng)畫) road signs. He uses pictures which appear to move as you go nearer to or farther from them. This isn't a new idea. But it is new to use these pictures on road signs."We found that people were more likely to pay attention to moving signs,"said Simon. So now,you can really see rocks falling, trains moving, horses running or a car falling over edge of a cliff (懸崖).Quite a warnin g!
The ideas in the competition were so creative that we are surprised. Why British industry doesn't ask more school children for suggestions.Perhaps this will be the start of pupil power!

1.March 21 has been declared World Sleep Day,a time to recognize and celebrate the value of sleep. Many sleep experts hope it will be a wake-up call.
According to a poll (民意調(diào)查)by the National Sleep Foundation, nearly 4 in 5 Americans don't get as much sleep as they should during the workweek. On average, adults are thought to need at least eight hours of sleep a night, although some can manage with less and some won't do well without more. But the survey found that,on workdays, only 21% of Americans actually get a full eight hours of sleep, and another 21% get less than six.
To many of us,the thought of spending more time sleeping is,well,a big yawn.On the other hand, the thought of being smarter, thinner, healthier and more cheerful can be very attractive. And those are just a few of the advantages that can be ours if we get enough sleep, researchers say. Also on the plus side:We're likely to have better skin, better memories, better judgment, and,oh,yes, longer lives.
"When you lose even one hour of sleep for any reason,it influences your performance the next day,"says Dr.Alon Avidan, director of the UCLA Sleep Disorders Center.
A study published last year found the same to be true even of children. When kids aged 8 to 12 slept for just one hour less for four nights, they didn't function as well during the day.
But sleeping has an image problem."We see napping or sleeping as lazy,"says Jennifer Vriend,a clinical psychologist in Ottawa,Canada, and the leading author of the study with children."We put so much attention on diet, nutrition and exercise.Sleep is in the back seat."In fact, she adds,no matter how much we work out,no matter how well we eat,we can't be in top physical shape unless we also get plenty of sleep.

32.The underlined part in Paragraph 1 meansB.
A.to wake up the sleepers                 B.to draw people's attention
C.to serve as a morning call              D.to declare the special day
33.According to papragrph3,we can conclude thatD.
A.being healthier is one of the advantages for us
B.sleeping has nothing to do with one's expectations
C.spending more time on sleeping is a waste of time
D.enough sleep can be of great benefit to everyone
34.What Jennifer Vriend said in the last paragraph implies thatC.
A.sleeping is an image problem            B.lazy people tend to sleep long
C.people care little about sleeping       D.sleeping is only part of our life
35.What is the purpose of the passage?A
A.to raise the awareness of enough sleeping.
B.to provide a research result of sleeping.
C.to talk about people's sleeping problems.
D.to stress the function of sleeping at night.

6.As shocking as the idea of baby birds growing up in a cigarette-filled home sounds,a new study suggests that some birds may benefit from putting the stuff from cigarette butts (煙蒂) into their nests.The nicotine remaining in smoked filters (濾嘴) may serve as a natural insecticide (殺蟲劑),driving harmful insects away from the nests and the baby birds living within.Tobacco plants produce nicotine because it defends against insects that would otherwise eat the plants.
The butts are undoubtedly smelly.But birds are actually quite fond of smelly chemicals,such as those found in aromatic (芳香的) plants.Some nest-building species regularly fill their nests with fresh aromatics,possibly because the chemicals are good for the immune system or the development of the chicks.Alternatively,the plant chemicals might act as insecticides.
In the study,researchers at the Autonomous University of Tlaxcala in Mexico set up heat traps,which attract harmful insects,in 55nests around Mexico City.Some traps were lined with the stuff in smoked cigarette filters.The others were lined with the stuff from unsmoked cigarette filters,which did not contain nicotine and other smoking by-products.Whether the nest held eggs,chicks or nothing,the unsmoked cigarette traps collected more harmful insects,suggesting that it is the chemicals that drove harmful insects away.
In a second experiment,the researchers collected 28house sparrow nests and 29house finch (朱雀) nests from Mexico City immediately after the chicks flew out for food.They found that the more smoked filter stuff filled a nest,the fewer harmful insects it had.
The missing piece of the puzzle is whether the reduced number of harmful insects in the nests actually provided any benefit to the chicks.It is also unclear if nicotine or another chemical found in cigarettes may have turned the harmful insects out of the nests.
If the results hold,then this study is an example of wildlife adaptation to urbanization-or at least evidence that birds are smart and can still follow their noses in urban environments.
63.What may be the function of nicotine in cigarette butts for birds?A
A.To provide building materials for bird nests.
B.To drive harmful insects away from bird nests.
C.To protect the plants from being eaten by insects.
D.To attract baby birds to stay in the nests.
64.What is the first experiment aimed at?D
A.Proving that heat traps attract harmful insects in Mexico City.
B.Comparing smoked cigarette filters with unsmoked ones.
C.Analyzing what is produced from smoked cigarette filters.
D.Studying what it is that drives harmful insects away.
65.What can you infer from the passage?C
A.Birds tend to use insecticide to protect the baby birds.
B.Nicotine is the only chemical that drives harmful insects away.
C.Some insects are afraid of smelly chemicals in aromatic plants.
D.Unsmoked cigarette traps attract more harmful insects.
66.Where could you possibly see the passage?A
A.In a science report
B.In an urbanization essay
C.In a tobacco advertisement
D.In an anti-smoking brochure.
