閱讀下列短文,從各題所給的A、B、C、D四個選項中,選出最佳選項。

The biggest safety - threat facing airlines today may not be a terrorist with a gun, but the man with the portable computer in business class. In the past 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that have been caused by electromagnetic interference (電磁干擾). The source of this interference remains unconfirmed, but increasingly, experts point the blame at portable computers, radios and cassette players and mobile telephones.

RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation (航空) industry, has recommended that all airlines ban (禁止) such devices from being used during “critical” stages of flight, particularly take - oft and landing. Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during the flight. Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some airlines forbid passengers from using such equipment during take - off and landing, most are reluctant (勉強) to enforce a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during the flight.

The difficulty is predicating how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft's computers. Experts know that portable devices give out radiation, which affects wave lengths which aircraft use for navigation and communication. But, because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not.

The fact that aircraft may be vulnerable (易受損的) to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use a radio system in order to damage navigation equipment.

A.they may have been caused by the damage to the radio system

B.they may have taken place during the take - off and landing

C.they were proved to have been caused by the passengers' portable computers

D.the pilots are not expert at electromagnetics

3.Few airlines wish to entirely forbid passengers to use electric devices because ________.

[ ]

A.they don't believe in such a danger as radio interference

B.the harmful effect of them is yet to be proved

C.most passengers don't want to take a plane which doesn't allow the use of radios or cassette players

D.they will take other safety measures

4.It can be inferred from the passage that the writer ________.

[ ]

A.is in favor of forbidding passenger's use of electronic devices completely

B.hasn't formed his own opinion on the problem

In the 1940s, Pinehaven Park was one of Crafton City's loveliest recreation(娛樂)areas. Over 40 acres of woods and fields were open to the public. In the 1950s, part of the park was taken over by Crafton City's garbage. Fifteen acres were to be used for landfill disposal(理置). As time went on, more and more of the park was used for garage disposal and less for recreation. Two years ago, the park was closed to the public for good. Along with household garbage, industrial chemicals had for years been dumped (傾倒)in the Pinehaven landfill. These poisonous chemicals had begun to seep(滲)back up through the soil. All of Pinehaven Park had become dangerously polluted.

Last year, the fish in the Crafton River began to die. After a series of investigations(研究), it became clear that the people of Crafton City were not to blame. 100~150 miles upstream, big paper mills were dumping industrial wastes into the river. Little by little, the level of poison in the river began to rise. Finally, it became so polluted that the fish themselves could no longer survive.

Downtown Crafton used to be a quiet area. Ten years of remarkable growth changed that in a big hurry. But with Crafton City's new prosperity(繁榮)came a new problem: air pollution. And it is a serious problem. Air pollution levels in Crafton are regularly reaching those of the nation's large industrial cities.

(1)Which of the following best states the central idea of the passage?

[ ]

A.Chemical dumping is a serious threat to Crafton City's soil.

B.The rapid growth of industry has brought air pollution to Crafton City.

C.The disposal of garbage can destroy recreation areas.

D.Industrial growth and progress have resulted in the pollution of Crafton City's water, air, and soil.

(2)According to the passage, what portion of the park had originally been marked for use as a garbage dump?

[ ]

A.Less than half B.Exactly half

C.About one third D.Most of it

(3)As it is used in the passage, the phrase“for good”means ________.

[ ]

A.practically B.for ever

C.thoroughly D.a(chǎn)dvantageously

(4)According to the passage, one result of dumping industrial chemicals into the landfill was that ________.

[ ]

A.the land became unsafe for humans

B.the animals on the land died

C.the poisonous chemicals were washed into the nearby river

D.the smoke from the chemicals polluted the air surrounding the landfill
