March 16th is World Sleep Day. This year’s slogan (標(biāo)語(yǔ)) is “Breathe Easily, Sleep Well”. Its aim is to celebrate the benefits of good and healthy sleep.
Sleep is like food for the brain. Enough sleep helps the body and brain grow and develop. According to the National Sleep Foundation in the US, adults need seven to nine hours of sleep every night. For students aged 10 to 17, a healthy amount is about eight to nine hours per night.
But many students don’t get enough sleep because of early school start time and heavy homework. About 80 percent of middle school students don’t get enough sleep, the China Youth and Children Research Center reported. For some students, they want to sleep early, but they keep worrying about their schoolwork and can’t fall asleep quickly. For others, they may even have insomnia which might keep them awake (醒著的)all night.
These sleeping problems greatly affect people’s lives. Experts have shown that lack of sleep for teenagers leads to poor grades. Students without enough sleep cannot pay attention in class or do well in sports. Also, the lack of sleep may make them depressed (沮喪的).
Luckily, with good sleeping habits, it is easier to fall asleep. Some of these good habits include avoiding drinks that make people excited late in the day, going to sleep at the same time each night, and sleeping in a comfortable place that is dark, quiet, and neither too warm nor too cold.

People who have lost the ability to understand or use words due to brain damage are called aphasics(失語(yǔ)癥患者).Such patients can be extremely good at something else. From the changing expressions on speakers' faces and the tones of their voices, they can tell lies from truths.
Doctors studying the human brain have given a number of examples of this amazing power of aphasics. Some have even compared this power to that of a dog with an ability to find out the drugs hidden in the baggage.
Recently, scientists carried out tests to see if all that was said about aphasics was true. They studied a mixed group of people. Some were normal;others were aphasics. It was proved that the aphasics were far ahead of the normal people in recognizing false speeches—in most cases, the normal people were fooled by words, but the aphasics were not.
Some years ago,Dr.Oliver Sacks wrote in his book about his experiences with aphasics. He mentioned a particular case in a hospital. Some aphasics were watching the president giving a speech on TV.Since the president had been an actor earlier, making a good speech was no problem for him.He was trying to put his feelings into every word of his speech.
But his way of speaking had the opposite effect on the patients. They didn't seem to believe him.Instead, they burst into laughter. The aphasics knew that the president did not mean a word of what he was saying. He was lying!
Many doctors see aphasics as people who are not completely normal because they lack the ability to understand words. However, according to Dr.Sacks, they are more gifted than normal people.Normal people may get carried away by words.Aphasics seem to understand human expressions better, though they cannot understand words.
1.What is so surprising about aphasics?
A. They can fool other people.
B. They can tell whether people are lying.
C. They can understand language better.
D. They can find out the hidden drugs.
2.How did the scientists study aphasics?
A. By asking them to watch TV together.
B. By organizing them into acting groups.
C. By comparing them with normal people.
D. By giving them chances to speak on TV.
3.What do we learn from this text?
A. What ones says reflects how one feels.
B. Aphasics have richer feelings than others.
C. Normal people often tell lies in their speeches.
D. People poor at one thing can be good at another.

In this digital age, we search almost everything online before we decide what to do. According to a US-based business reviewing website, the top searches at different times of the night in different European countries vary a lot. Below are some of the more interesting findings. Take a look.
Italy: While most Europeans are searching for restaurants or bars around 6 p.m., the Italians are searching for messages, shoes and job agencies.
Germany: Coming from perhaps the most organized and efficient country, the average German is attracted to food and drink. Having looked up restaurants and bars earlier in the evening, they have already been searching for breakfast and brunch by 9 p.m.
UK: Karaoke is one of the most popular pastimes in Asia, but in Europe, the UK seems to be the only nation to look first for Karaoke bars in its Internet searches, roughly around 9 p.m. Later into the night, Britons are going to 24-hour pharmacies (藥房)by 10 p.m., and then there is a steady interest in 24-hour food stores and delivery, until 1 a.m.
France: The French call it a day online quite early, at about 10 p.m. But they don't do it until they've had a chance to put their dancing shoes on, after searching for “night club” and “dance”.
Spain: The Spanish seem to be quite practical. They search for elementary schools and dermatology(皮膚科) at 10 p.m., followed by swimming lessons at midnight.
1.A man searching for education information online often probably comes from ________.
A. Spain
B. UK
C. France
D. Germany
2.What can we learn from the text?

Do you think studying in a different country is something that sounds very exciting and great fun? Certainly, it is a new experience, one that brings the opportunity(機(jī)會(huì)) to discover amazing things and a feeling of freedom. But do remember that there are also some challenges you will meet, for your views may disagree with the different beliefs, norms(社會(huì)準(zhǔn)則), values and traditions of different countries. This is called “culture shock”. The following are the stages of adjusting.
The first stage is called ”the honeymoon”, where you are excited about living in a different place, and everything seems to be fantastic.
Eventually, however, the second stage of culture shock appears, “the hostility stage”. You begin to notice that not everything that seemed so wonderful initially is now awful, making you feel distressed and tired. Usually at this point, you use some defense mechanisms(機(jī)制) to help you cope(應(yīng)付) and to protect yourself against the effects of culture shock. Two of them are “repression”, which happens when you pretend that everything is acceptable and that nothing bothers you, and “regression”, when you start to act like a child, sometimes careless and irresponsible. The third kind is “isolation”. You don’t want to communicate with anybody, cutting yourself off the world. The last type is “rejection”, where you think you don’t need anybody, feeling you are coping fine alone.
After you deal with your hostile feelings, next comes the stage, “recovery”, when you begin to see things of a different culture you can learn to appreciate.
The last stage is “adjustment”. In this stage, you have reached a point where you actually feel good because you are able to understand the new culture.
Culture shock is not something you can avoid in a foreign country. Actually, you learn how to interact with other people, and you learn a considerable amount about life in a new culture. Eventually, you learn more-about yourself.
1.How many stages of culture shock does the text mention?
A. 4.
B. 6.
C. 7.
D. 8.
2.Which mechanism does a person apply if he pretends to accept everything in a new culture?
A. Repression.
B. Regression.
C. Isolation.
D. Rejection.
3.What’s the writer’s attitude towards culture shock?
A. Serious.
B. Positive.
C. Cautious.
D. Scared.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A New Experience
B. Stages of adjustment
C. Culture Shock
D. Defense Mechanisms
