【題目】An American shopper, Emma Mumford, who was named “the Coupon(優(yōu)惠券) Queen” has spent just 350 on a luxury(奢侈) Christmas for her and her family—but got 2,500 worth of food, drink and presents thanks to coupons and offers.

Ms Mumford is a so-called “extreme coupon and spends hours hunting out the best deals and bargains. She has been preparing for this Christmas since the end of the last one. Ms Mumford made the huge savings by checking price comparison websites and as a result collected more presents than she needed for Christmas. “It has been so nice to have Christmas sorted and not having to worry about breaking the bank. There is a misunderstanding that everyone who does couponing only gets value products but through my careful shopping I have managed to purchase designer perfumes(香水), a high-end coffee machine .”she explained.

She said “What started as a hobby to help me save money has turned into my life and I am able to run a business helping people save money. I know what it feels like to struggle as my ex-partner had a lot of debt which I took on for him. We were in a poor situation where every penny counted. That’s what really inspired me.”

【題目】Starting next year, Ford Motor Co. will allow parents to limit the speed at which their teenage children drive their car.

The company will make a new feature on many models that can limit teen drivers to 80 mph(130 kph), using a computer chip(芯片) in the key.

Parents in the United States, where most teens can get their driving license at 16, also have the option of programming the car key to limit the audio system volume(音量), and to sound continuous alarm if the driver doesn’t wear a seat belt.

More than half of parents surveyed worry that their teenage children are driving at unsafe speeds, talking on hand-held cell phones or texting while driving, or otherwise driving without due care and attention. More than a third of parents also are concerned that their teens do not always fasten their safety belts when driving.

“Our message to parents is, hey, we are proving you some conditions to give your new drivers that may allow you to feel a little more comfortable in giving them the car more often,” said Jim Buczkowski, Ford’s director of electronic and electrical systems engineering.

More than 5,000 US teens die each year in car crashes. The rate of crashes, fatal(致命的) and nonfatal, per mile driven for 16-year-old drivers is almost 10 times the rate for drivers aged 30 to 59, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The new feature, called “MyKey”, will be standard on an unspecified number of Ford models when the new models come out late next summer. The feature will spread to the entire Ford, Lincoln and Mercury Lineup as models are updated, spokesman Wes Sherwood said.

The company already uses computer chips in its keys to prevent thefts. The car won’t start unless it recognizes the chip in the key.

“It’s making use of existing technology, and through the magic of software, we’re able to build features on top of the features we already have,” Buczkowski said.

【1】According to the passage, MyKey can ______.

A. limit speed and prevent thefts

B. adjust the audio system’s volume

C. remind drivers to answer the phone

D. help drivers wear a seat belt

2According to Jim Buczkowski, MyKey ______.

A. helps parents feel more comfortable in their cars

B. provides parents more chances to get along with children

C. helps parents feel less worried when giving cars to children

D. discourages parents from giving cars to their children more often

3From the passage, we can learn that ______.

A. teens often drive 10 times faster than adults

B. many parents think their children drive too fast

C. Ford will take over Lincoln and Mercury Lineup

D. MyKey has nothing to do with existing technology

4Ford Motor Company’s new car key may be most welcomed by ______.

A. teens B. passengers C. parents D. policemen

【題目】閱讀下面短文,從各題所給的A、B、C、D四個(gè)選項(xiàng)中選出最佳選項(xiàng)。

Scientists have learned a great deal in the last thirty years by studying people as they sleep. They study the bodily characteristics that change during sleep. They have learned that there is one kind of sleep which causes rapid eye movement ( REM ) and another kind with no rapid eye movement (NREM).

Sleep is divided into three stages. In stage one, when you start to go to sleep, you have a pleasant floating feeling. In stage two, you sleep more deeply, and a noise will probably not wake you up. In stage three, the brain waves are less active. This third stage is when you dream, REM tends to signal that we are dreaming. For the rest of the night, you alternate between REM and NREM sleep.

Sleep is a biological need, but your brain never really sleeps. The things that are on your mind during the day are still there at night. They appear as dreams. Researchers say that normal people may have four or five REM periods of dreaming each night. The first one may begin only a half hour after they fall asleep, and the final one may last up to an hour. Nightmares (a frightening dream) usually happen toward the early morning.

Besides dreaming, snoring is also common in one's sleep. People snore because they have trouble breathing while they are asleep. Some snorers have a condition called apnea. They stop breathing up to thirty or forty times an hour because the muscles relax too much and block the airway. After a period of time, the brain will signal the person to start breathing again. During this time a person will snore. This is a dangerous condition, because once the brain is without oxygen for four minutes there could be serious brain damage. Sleep apnea can also cause irregular heartbeats, high blood pressure, and a general lack of energy.

What should you do if you have trouble sleeping? Lots of people take sleeping pills, but these are dangerous because they can be addictive. Doctors say the best thing is to try to relax and to avoid bad habits.

Sleep is important to humans. In an average lifetime, 220, 000 hours are spent sleeping, so we need to understand everything we can about sleep. Sweet dreams!

【題目】Small seating in the economy-class(經(jīng)濟(jì)艙) sections of airplanes is not just uncomfortable but potentially life-threatening. Space has become so tight that passengers cannot protect themselves in the event of a crash.

A report on a long distance flight from the doctors of Vienna stated that only 10% in economy class could adopt the recommended brace position on the planes safety tips in case of emergency, and they were the smallest of the group. And 30% of their fellow passengers traveling in first class could adopt the position, which is internationally recognized as improving the chances of survival in the event of a crash. The authors of the report are now calling for greater space between seat rows to increase safety.

A spokesman for British Airways (BA), which is responsible for safety on all British planes, opposed the idea that small seating was a threat(威脅) to passengers. We don’t think it is a safety matter, he said, We have high safety standards and all UK aircraft meet them. In the past month, both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic introduced sleeper seats, stressing the outstanding comfort in the front of the planes. But that space gained is space lost in economy.

Until recently, economy class was at least bearablewith an 86-centimeter seat. Scheduled Airlines such as BA and KLM gave passengers enough leg room and comfortable seats. But the arrival of new, weight-saving seats caused economy class to take a turn for the worse. Extra rows have been put into the plane, with the result that the average seat now is 79 centimetres. Singapore Airlines has become the latest carrier to narrow down its seats. It announced free wine for economy passengers last September, but at the same time reduced leg room by 8 centimetres.

Economy class on Scheduled Airlines is now often little better than economy on Qatar Airways. Some Qatar Airways even offer the chance to upgradeat a priceto seats which, at 89-91 centimetres, are roomier than those of most Scheduled Airlines.

【1】What can we learn from the passage?

A. Scheduled Airlines produced new comfortable seats for economy class.

B. Doctors from Vienna said less space between seats could cause danger.

C. Spokesman for BA declared that narrow seat space was a threat.

D. Qatar Airways offered larger seats with no more charge.

【2】What might be the authors attitude towards reducing the space of economy seats?

A. Neutral.B. Sceptical.C. Supportive.D. Disapproving.

【3】 Where does the passage most probably come from?

A. A biography.B. A book review.

C. A magazine. D. A realistic novel.
