Dear sir /madam,

Li Hua

Dear sir /madam,

I am very glad that your school will hold the English summer camp which contains many courses, such as gardening, cooking, self-defense, nursing and so on.

I want to register to attend a course about gardening because I have liked flowers, grasses etc since I was a little child. I especially like playing in the garden where I can enjoy the beauty of nature. For one thing, I want to gain a bit more knowledge of gardening so that it can help me to major in the gardening after attending college. For another, I can realize the bitterness of the gardeners and treasure plants much more consequently. What‘s more, after graduation, I plan to devote my life to cultivate flowers and grasses to turn our country into a more beautiful state, attracting more foreigners to come to visit it.

Yours,

Li Hua

Losing weight comes with a lot of health benefits—including making your brain sharper.

Yes, it turns out that overweight may damage cognitive functions (認(rèn)知功能) such as memory and attention. There have been few studies of overweight and cognitive functioning, possibly because it is generally believed that it is not a primary risk cause for poor cognitive performance. Losing weight, therefore, may help improve these mental functions, according to a new research led by John Gunstad, assistant professor of psychology at Kent State University.

Growing evidence suggests that being fat is linked to cognitive deficits (缺陷). So Gunstad and his team guessed that losing weight might improve mental function. For their study, they measured memory and attention in a group of 150 overweight participants, some of whom had some kind of operation for weight loss and some did not. All of the volunteers completed mental skills tests to assess their abilities of memory and attention at the beginning of the study, and again 12 weeks later. To begin with, about 24% of the patients showed damaged learning and 23% showed signs of poor memory when tested. At the end of the study, those who had lost weight after operation improved their scores into the average or above average range for cognitive functions. Scores for the volunteers who didn’t lose weight dropped even further.

The study helped Gunstad to find out whether losing weight had any effect on mental function. Now that he’s seen the positive effect that weight loss can have on memory and attention, he says he will next study those who choose to lose weight by the traditional way—eating healthier and getting more active. He expects that losing weight in this way will have a similarly positive effect on the brain. “If we can improve the condition with operations, then we can probably produce the same change with behavioral weight loss as well,” he says.

1. There is less research on overweight and cognitive functions because researchers _____.

A. believe overweight only affects our body

B. have focused on ways to sharpen people’s mind

C. do not consider overweight a main cause for low cognitive ability

2. The result of Gunstad’s study shows that ______.

A. losing weight has little effect on people’s memory

B. losing weight can improve people’s mental functions

C. overweight people are likely to have psychology problems

D. overweight people’s abilities of concentration differ greatly

3. What is Gunstad planning to prove next in his research?

A. Slim people are smarter than overweight people.

B. Healthy diet is better than exercise in losing weight.

C. Traditional ways of losing weight are better than operation.

D. Overweight people will get smarter by taking more exercise.

4. Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A. Body Weight and Health

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:【考點(diǎn)對(duì)接模擬題】2015屆高考一輪摸底專練閱讀理解社會(huì)生活類英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

How to apologize properly is much more difficult than we think. Provided you want to teach your children to apologize, you must be good at saying sorry yourself, especially to your own children. But how you say it can be quite tricky.

If you say to your children “I’m sorry I got angry with you, but …” what follows that “but” can make the apology ineffective: “I had a bad day” or “your noise was giving me a headache ” leaves the person feeling that he should be apologizing for his bad behavior in expecting an apology.

Another method by which people appear to apologize without actually doing so is to say “I’m sorry you’re upset”; this suggests that you are somehow at fault for allowing yourself to get upset by what the other person has done.

Then there is the general, all covering apology, which avoids the necessity of identifying a specific act that was particularly hurtful or insulting, and which the person who is apologizing should promise never to do again. Saying “I’m useless as a parent” does not make any sense.

These false apologies are used by people who believe saying sorry shows weakness. Parents who wish to teach their children to apologize should see it as a sign of strength, and therefore not voice these false apologies.

But even when presented with examples of really being sorry, children still need help to become aware of the complexities of saying sorry. A three-year-old might need help in understanding that other children feel pain just as he does, and that hitting a playmate over the head with a heavy toy requires an apology. A six-year-old might need reminding that spoiling other children’s expectations can require an apology. A 12-year-old might need to be shown that taking the biscuit without asking permission is acceptable, but that borrowing a parent’s clothes without permission is not.

1. If a mother adds “but” to an apology,________.

A. the child may feel that he owes her an apology

B. she knows that the child has been hurt

C. the child may find the apology easier to accept

D. she feels that she should have apologized

2. According to the author, saying “I’m sorry you’re upset” most probably means “_______”.

A. You have good reason to get upset

B. I apologize for hurting your feelings

C. I’m aware you’re upset , but I’m not to blame

D. I’m at fault for making you upset

3. We learn from the last paragraph that iiS teaching children to say sorry

A.the complexities involved should be ignored

B.parents need to set them a good example

C.their ages should be taken into account

D parents should be patient and tolerant

4.It can be inferred from the passage that apologizing properly is

A.to say sorry in a general way

B.a way to improve your relationships

C.a sign of social progress and social harmony

D. not as simple as it seems

Do you scream on a roller coaster ride? You slowly climb up a steep slope until an almost vertical(垂直的) drop, and then... Ahhhhhhhh! Thrill-seekers like me are in luck because theme parks are pushing the boundaries of technology to create the fastest, tallest, scariest roller coasters the world has ever known.

Alton Towers in Britain opened the world's first 14-1oop roller coaster a few months ago, called The Smiler. Over in Abu Dhabi, Ferrari World claims to have the world's fastest one. Ferrari World's Formula Rossa ride sends out passengers from 0-240km/h in just 4. 9 seconds. During this rapid acceleration they experience G-forces only fighter pilots usually feel: Up to 4. 8G. The designer of several rides at Alton Towers, said: "While we can stand 6-8Gs for very short periods of time, ff we experience 5G for more than five seconds we're likely to "black out."

On modern roller coasters passengers experience about 3G in tight turns and loops. But while we may have reached the limit in terms of G-forces, there is no technological limit to how fast or how high roller coasters can go---it's all down to money. Alton Towers' The Smiler cost ~18m to build.

Some companies are finding other ways to keep us amused. There's a move towards indoor rides where the experience is improved by audio-visual technologies. For example, a company called Dynamic Structures is currently developing a "coal-mine-themed" ride for a client in Dubai that will combine speed and G-forces with 3D projection effects and robotics, which will trick your brain into thinking you're really falling.

I can't wait to enjoy this one. What about you: Do you like being upside down?

1.The underlined phrase "black out" in the second paragraph probably means .... .

A. stop breathing B. lose consciousness for a short time

C. lose memory forever D. bleed to death

2. We can learn from the passage that __

A. all the theme parks are creating the fast roller coasters

B. the Smiler sends out passengers from 0-240km/h in just 4.9 seconds

C. it is unusual for fighter pilots to feel up to 4.8G

D. the more the money is spent, the faster the roller coaster can go

3. The feature of the "coal-mine-themed" ride is

A. 3Dtechnologies B. indoor rides C. G-forces D. dynamic structures

4. What is the best title for the passage?

A. The Fastest Roller Coaster B. The Smiler and G-forces

C. Screaming for Fun D. The New Technology
