【題目】 Jane Austen is loved mainly as a charming guide to fashionable life in the Regency period (英國攝政時期). She is admired for describing a world of elegant houses, dances, servants and fashionable young men driving barouches (四輪四座大馬車). But her own vision of her task was completely different. She was an ambitious and strict moralist. She was highly conscious of human failings and she had a deep desire to make people nicer: less selfish, more reasonable and more sensitive to the needs of others.

In Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bonnet start off heartily disliking each other and then, gradually realize they are in love. They make one of the great romantic couples. He is handsome, rich and well connected; she is pretty, smart and lively. But why actually are they right for one another?

Jane Austen is very clear. It’s for a reason we tend not to think of very much today: It is because each can educate and improve the other. When Mr. Darcy arrives in the neighborhood, he feels “superior” to everyone else, because he has more money and higher status. At a key moment, Elizabeth condemns his arrogance (自大) and pride to his face. It sounds offensive in the extreme, but later he admits that this was just what he needed.

Mostly, we tend to think of love as liking someone for who they already are, and of total acceptance. But the person who is right for us, Austen is saying, is not simply someone who makes us feel relaxed or comfortable; they got to be able to help us overcome our failings and become more mature, more honest and kinder—and we need to do something similar for them.

1What do we know about Jane Austen from paragraph 1?

A.She lived a fashionable life.B.She wrote about the life of the rich.

C.She knew exactly human virtues.D.She was nicer to less selfish people.

2What can we learn about Mr. Darcy from the text?

A.He dislikes Elizabeth from the beginning to the end.

B.He is handsome, rich and rather modest.

C.He is kind to everyone in the neighborhood.

D.He needs Elizabeth to point out his shortcomings.

3Which person is right for you according to Jane Austen?

A.A person that you like for who he or she is.

B.A person with whom you feel really relaxed.

C.A person making you become a better man or woman.

D.A person who does something similar to you.

4What message does the book Pride and Prejudice convey?

A.Improve yourself with your lover’s help.

C.Earn much money to make people love you.

D.Find your true love with pride and prejudice.

【題目】 There is an English saying:“1” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body.2

Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise.3If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.

Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. 【題目】 For most of us, work is the central, dominating fact of life. We spend more than half our conscious hours at work, preparing for work, traveling to and from work. What we do there largely determines our standard of living and our status to a considerable extent. It is sometimes said that because leisure has become more important, the injustices of work can be pushed into a corner, and that because most work is pretty intolerable, the people who do it should compensate for its boredom, frustrations and humiliations by concentrating their hopes on the other parts of their lives. For the foreseeable future, however, the material and psychological rewards which work can provide will continue to play a vital part in determining the satisfaction that life can offer.

Yet only a small minority can control the pace at which they work or the conditions where their work is done; only for a small minority does work offer scope for creativity, imagination or initiative.

Inequality at work is still one of the most glaring (明顯的) forms of inequality in our society. We cannot hope to solve the more obvious problems of industrial life, many of which arise from the frustrations created by inequality at work, unless we handle it determinedly.

The most glaring inequality is that between managers and the rest. For most managers, work is an opportunity and a challenge. Their jobs engage their interest and allow them to develop their abilities. They are constantly learning. They are able to exercise responsibility. They have a considerable degree of control over their own and others’ working lives. Most important of all, they have opportunities to initiate. By contrast, for most manual workers, work is a boring, dull, even painful experience. They spend all their working lives in intolerable conditions. The majority have little control over their work. It provides them with no opportunity for personal development. Many jobs are so routine that workers feel themselves to be mere cogs (齒輪) in the bureaucratic machine. As a direct consequence of their work experience, many workers feel alienated (疏遠(yuǎn)) from their work and their firm.

1In the writer’s opinion, people judge others mainly by ________.

A.the type of work they doB.the place where they work

C.the time they spend at workD.the amount of money they earn

2According to the writer, to solve problems in an industrial society, we ________.

A.should create more working opportunities for the poor

B.have to get rid of the unequal aspects in work

C.had better cancel all managing positions in a company

D.should encourage the manual workers to promote efficiency

3What advantage does the writer say managers have over workers?

A.They won’t be out of work.

B.They get time off to learn constantly.

C.They can work at what interests them.

D.They have complete control over themselves.

【題目】閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。

Hi, I am Jane. I like the book named The Story of My Life by Helen Keller, which is the most influential book in my life. It is filled with courage, struggle and faith throughout. Helen Keller was once in deep despair in her childhood, but finally she decided to overcome her physical defects and live happily. Furthermore, she showed great patience in her long and hard learning period. I have learned, above all, three lessons from her story. First, she taught me that often the road to success is to face hardships bravely. Maybe you are born under a star yet you can stand a better chance than others. It is therefore important that you screw up your courage when courage is needed. Second, the destruction of part of her senses did not prevent her from learning: on the contrary, she had made continual efforts to go deeper into the realm of knowledge, and her perseverance had thus helped her overcome many handicaps. Third, she advised that we should make the most of our sense-organs as if we would lose them soon because in this way we would observe the world more carefully than ever before.

The book is inspiring in that it is one brimming over with the unbending will of a gallant woman set with seemingly insurmountable (adj.不可克服的) difficulties. I hope I can be as courageous as she.

【題目】 Rosie Dutton, a teacher from Relax Kids in Tamworth, UK, used two apples to show her students the often unseen but harmful effects of school bullying (欺凌).

She posted the lesson on Facebook, where it's been shared more than 160,000 times. Rosie Dutton explained that during one of her classes she presented the children with two red apples. What the kids didn't know was that before the lesson, she had repeatedly dropped one of the apples on the floor. And yet, on the outside at least, both apples looked perfect.

“I picked up the apple I'd dropped on the floor and started to tell the children how I disliked this apple, “ Dutton wrote. “I told them that because I didn't like it, I didn't want them to like it either, so they should call it names too. “ Some of the children looked at her as if she were “crazy” , but the students passed the apple around the circle, calling it names.

Continuing the exercise, the teacher then passed the second apple around the circle. This apple, however, was showered with words like “Your skin is beautiful” and “What a beautiful colour you have” .

Dutton then showed the students both apples once again, stressing that “there was no change, and both apples still looked the same. “

Finally, Dutton cut both apples open. The apple that the class treated kindly looked fresh inside. But the other apple-the one they'd treated poorly-was bruised(碰傷的)beneath its skin.

“I think there was a light bulb moment for the children immediately, “ Dutton said. “When people are bullied, especially children, they feel horrible inside and sometimes don't show or tell others how they are feeling. If we hadn't cut that apple open, we would never have known how much pain we had caused it. “

Dutton explained how important it is to teach children to stand up for one another, and to stop any form of bullying.

“Let's create a generation of kind caring children, “ the teacher wrote. “The tongue has no bones, but is strong enough to break a heart. So be careful with your words. “

1What had the teacher done to the first apple before the lesson?

A.She had introduced it to the kids.B.She had coloured it bright.

C.She had made it look perfect.D.She had damaged it purposely.

2What does the underlined part “call it names” (Para. 3) mean?

A.Shout at it.B.Make fun of it.C.Cheer for it.D.Say rude things.

3What did the teacher tell the kids to do with the second apple?

A.Drop it.B.Praise it.C.Ignore it.D.Respect it.

4What's the purpose of the teacher's using two apples in class?

A.To draw the kids’ attention.

B.To explain her personal preferences.

C.To help the kids understand the results of bullying.

D.To make a comparison between them.
