2.Bit by bit,the sand dust that fills the sky is dying down.The blue sky and the burnin sun once again hang over the desert.
He is on the road,driving his beat-up yellow cab(出租車).The sides of the road are littered with damaged vehicles.Masses of smoke in the distance tell him that a war is being dragged on throughout his country.
It's a fine day despite the choking heat.Not a breath of wind is blowing.
A group of vehicles are traveling towards him,carrying many passengers.The scene reminds him of the market days in this country when crowds of trucks transport folks to the markets; the only difference is,this time,they are not trucks,but tanks,carrying foreigners,guns in hand.He stares at them.They stare back.So they pass by one another.
"The damned war!"he whispers bitterly.Two days ago,a bomb fell on the market in front of his house,destroying nearly everything in sight.He survived by luck.He decided then and there that he would give up this cab business.This will be his final run.After this,he will leave this place together with his wife and children
"Shala and my children,we'll soon meet each other again,after I'm done here."He turns his head to take a glance at a photo of his wife and children.The glass on the frame(相框) is broken,but their smiles in the picture do not fail to provide him the only comfort that he has.
Shortly he arrives at a checkpoint.Tanks sit by the side of the road,the sight of which sends a marked coldness through his backbone.A bunch of soldiers armed to the teeth stand by.A foreign soldier signals him to stop.He calms himself down and pulls over.During the past few days,nearly no civilian(平民) vehicles come out of the capital city,his car the only one on oads.
A few foreign soldiers come up to him,one,two,three,four,five.The leader bends over to have a look at the old car,then at him."Where do you come from and where are you going?"With a smile on his face,he answers with a broken speech in the tongue that the soldiers can understand,"Sir,I come from the capital,I'm leaving that place because it is a very dangerous place to be,with the war and everything."
While talking,he hands a cigarette over to the soldier, then lights it up for him.
"When will the war end?"he asks.
"It won't take long.We'll soon give all of you in the capital the true freedom."The soldier breathes a deep mouthful.He seems to have spotted the photo in the car,"The cigarette is not bad at all.Are those your wife and kids?I have two of my own,roughly the same age."
"Oh,yes,they are mine and they are constantly on my mind.They left the city a bit earlier,and I'm on my way to be reunited with them.Perhaps I'm never coming back.Driving a cab around during war times is too dangerous.I'm giving up the business."He looks at the soldiers,still smiling.
"After we overthrow your dictator(獨(dú)裁者),you won't have that to worry about,you can come back and pick up your life again."The soldier is leaning on the door of the car.It is perhaps the first time in many days that he has seen a happy face among the local people.It cheers him up.
"Maybe,but I have to go to see my family.If you would pay us a visit,my wife will prepare a good meal for all of you.Come with me,this is going to be my last business run and I won't even charge you."
"Can't make it.We're on duty.Give our regards to your wife and kids."The soldier is a bit excited,thinking maybe quite some locals have open arms for them after all."Oh,yes,I almost forgot,the south is battle-infected,where IS your family?"
Still smiling,he picks up the broken picture frame, presses a kiss on the photo, then turns around, staring into the eyes of that soldier, not quite himself from excitement, and the other foreign soldiers holding guns.Words drop out of his lips slowly but firmly:
"Paradise."
Perhaps the last thing he sees is the confused, fearful, twisted expression on the face of that soldier, and the cigarette end dropping from his fingers.
Then he pushes the button.

Masses of smoke in the distance tell him that a war is being dragged on throughout his country. Still smiling,he picks up the broken picture frame, presses a kiss on the photo, then turns around, staring into the eyes of that soldier, not quite himself from excitement, and the other foreign soldiers holding guns.Words drop out of his lips slowly but firmly:"Paradise."
根據(jù)第五段中的a bomb fell on the market in front of his house, destroying nearly everything in sight. He survived by luck.. 故選A.
With a smile on his face,he answers with a broken speech in the tongue that the soldier can understand,"Sir,I come from the capital.I'm leaving that place because it is a very dangerous place to be,with the war and everything."
Maybe, but I have to go to see my family. If you would pay us a visit,my wife will prepare a good meal for all of you.Come with me.This is going to be my last business run and I won't even charge you."或許,我不得不去看我的家人.如果你們要拜訪我們,我的妻子將為你們準(zhǔn)備豐盛的飯.跟我來(lái)吧.這將是我的最后一個(gè)經(jīng)營(yíng),我甚至不會(huì)指控你.從文中可知這個(gè)男士的妻子和孩子已經(jīng)死去,所以他說(shuō)這些話就是想殺死這個(gè)士兵.故選D.
65.B  推理判斷題  Perhaps the last thing he sees is the confused, fearful, twisted expression on the face of that soldier, and the cigarette end dropping from his fingers.

Perhaps the last thing he sees is the confused, fearful, twisted expression on the face of that soldier, and the cigarette end dropping from his fingers. Maybe,but I have to go to see my family.

19.When you want to throw something out as"junk",better take a second thought as it may be of great value.In fact,scientists made the same mistake with DNA years ago,and now they are trying to get it right.
We often say that DNA is a kind of acid that contains our genes.But the truth is that genes only make up 1 to 2 percent of our DNA,which caused scientists to believe that the rest of it is useless.
Nevertheless,instead of doing nothing,junk DNA,as it is called,turned out to be playing an important part in our body.If genes are like light bulbs,then junk DNA acts as switches.
They control which genes are used in a cell and how active they are. For example, they can determine whether a cell becomes a lung cell or a neuron (神經(jīng)元).
The study,published in the journal Nature on September 5,started in 2003,and 442 scientists from 30 labs around the world were involved,according to Reuters.It is considered the biggest breakthrough in genomics(基因?qū)W)in a decade because it might help scientists find the cause of certain diseases.
It has long been known that many complicated diseases,such as cancer,are caused by tiny changes in DNA.But now scientists realize that most of the changes occur not in the genes themselves,but in the"junk"part of the DNA.They are able to keep track of how and why ihe switches change and then figure out new treatments and drugs.
"Our former understanding of DNA was like getting a picture of Earth from space,"Eric Lander from the Broad Institute,US,told The New York Times."You know the planet is there,but you cannot see exactly what it's like on the surface."
But now with the new study result"you can follow the roads and see the traffic circulation.That's exactly the same way we will use this data in cancer research,"explained Mark Rubin from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.

D.Telling useful DNA from useless one.

b.making a metaphor(比喻)

A.a(chǎn)c
B.bc
C.a(chǎn)d

44.The results of the study mentioned in the article show thatD
A.cancer is caused by tiny changes in genes themselves
B.the study of junk DNA is less important than the study of genes
C.changes in junk DNA do not affect genes
D.junk DNA is very important for the functioning of our cells
45.Which of the following statements might Mark Rubin agree with?C
A.The finding of our genes is enough to fight against cancer.
B.The battle against cancer will be won within two years.
C.The finding of junk DNA throws light on how we might cure cancer.

3.I am a writer.I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of language-the way it can evoke (喚起)an emotion,a visual image,a complex idea,or a simple truth.Language is the tool of my trade. And I use them all-all the Englishes I grew up with.
Born into a Chinese family that had recently arrived in California,I've been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks.Like others,I have described it to people as"broken"English. But feel embarrassed to say that.It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than"broken",as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed,as if it lacked a certain wholeness.I've heard other terms used,"limited English,"for example. But they seem just as bad,as if everything is limited, including people's perceptions(認(rèn)識(shí))of the limited English speaker.
I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up,my mother's"limited"English limited my perception of her.I was ashamed of her English.I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is,because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of evidence to support me:the fact that people in department stores,at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her,or even acted as if they did not hear her.
I started writing fiction in 1985.And for reasons I won't get into today,I began to write stories using all the Englishes I grew up with:the English she used with me,which for lack of a better term might be described as"broken",and what I imagine to be her translation of her Chinese, her internal (內(nèi)在的) language.a(chǎn)nd for that I sought to preserve the essence, but neither an English nor a Chinese structure:I wanted to catch what language ability tests can never show;her intention, her feelings, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of her thoughts.

12.In its early history,Chicago had floods frequently,especially in the spring,making the streets so muddy that people,horses,and carts got stuck.An old joke that was popular at the time went something like this:A man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy Chicago street.Asked if he needs help,he replies,"No,thanks.I've got a good horse under me."
The city planner decided to build an underground drainage(排水)system,but there simply wasn't enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level.The only two options were to lower the Chicago River or raise the city.
An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced me the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt.This raised the level of the city's streets by as much as 12 feet.
This of course created a new problem:dirt practically buried the first floors of every building in Chicago.Building owners were faced with a choice:either change the first floors of their buildings into basements,and the second stories into main floors,or  hoist the entire buildings to meet the new street level.Small wood-frame buildings could be lifted fairly easily.But what about large,heavy structures like Tremont Hotel,which was a six-story brick building?
That's where George Pullman came in.He had developed some house-moving skills successfully.To lift a big structure like the Tremont Hotel,Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews (螺旋千斤頂) beneath the building's foundation.One man was assigned to operate each section of roughly 10 jackscrews.At Pullman's signal each man turned his jackscrew the same amount at the same time,thereby raising the building slowly and evenly.Astonishingly,the Tremont Hotel stay open during the entire operation,and many of its guests didn't even notice anything was happening.Some people like to say that every problem has a solution.But in Chicago's early history,every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem.Now that Chicago's waste water was draining efficiently into the Chicago River,the city's next step was to clean the polluted river.

28.The author mentions the joke to showB.
A.horses were fairly useful in Chicago
 B.Chicago's streets were extremely muddy
C.Chicago was very dangerous in the spring
D.the Chicago people were particularly humorous
29.The underlined word"hoist"in Paragraph 4 means"B".
A.change
B.lift
C.repair
D.decorate
30.What can we conclude about the moving operation of the Tremont Hotel?A
A.It went on smoothly as intended.
B.It interrupted the business of the hotel.
C.It involved Pullman turning ten jackscrews.
D.It separated the building from its foundation.
31.The passage is mainly about the early Chicago'sC.
A.popular life styles and their influences
B.environmental disasters and their causes
C.engineering problems and their solutions
 D.successful businessmen and their achievements.
