Without any hesitation,he said,“I’d be better off dead.” Hearing those words come out of my best friend’s mouth tore my heart apart. He has repeated that phrase more than once, and my mind continually plays it over like a voice recording.

I met my best friend about three years ago. After knowing me for six months,he told me about his struggles with depression.Sadness was not the only emotion that came over me; I was shocked. He seemed so outgoing and happy all the time.I soon learned that he was physically and emotionally abused as a young child, causing him to have suicidal(自殺的)thoughts.

He refuses to talk to others about his depression because he now distrusts adults, especially those in his family. In spite of this,he feels as if I understand him and that I know the right words to speak. Thus, when it comes to helping him, convenience is not in my vocabulary. It does not matter where I am or what I am doing, for he takes priority.Sometimes he just needs the assurance of my voice telling him that everything is going to be okay and that I will not let him down.

Many students at his school laugh at him when they notice the scars on his arms from cutting. It seems that other kids have every right to make fun of him and to look down on him.But no one holds such a right,so I encourage him to ignore the heartless kids who treat him badly. When he feels the weight of judging eyes or hateful voices,I always remind him that I care about him unconditionally.Just hearing me say I will always be his best friend seems to give him the security he needs to keep on going.

My best friend once told me that if he had not had me,he would not be alive. He said that my encouraging words convinced him not to take the way out(輕生).Our friendship has taught me that a single kind word can impact on someone’s life. With the fragility of life as it is,I believe in the necessity of encouragement.

I have been consistently opposed to feeding a baby regularly. As a doctor, mother and scientist in child development I believe there is nothing to recommend it, from the baby's point of view.

Mothers, doctors and nurse alike have no idea of where a baby's blood sugar level lies. All we know is that a low level is harmful to brain development and makes a baby easily annoyed. In this state, the baby is difficult to calm down and sleep is impossible. The baby asks for attention by crying and searching for food with its mouth.

It is not just unkind but also dangerous to say a fourhourly feeding schedule will make a baby satisfied. The first of the experts to advocate a strict clockwatching schedule was Dr.Frederic Truby King who was against feeding in the night. I've never heard anything so ridiculous. Baby feeding shouldn't follow a timetable set by the mum. What is important is feeding a baby in the best way, though it may cause some inconvenience in the first few weeks.

Well, at last we have copperbottomed research that supports demand feeding and points out the weaknesses of strictly timed feeding. The research finds out that babies who are fed on demand do better at school at age 5, 7, 11 and 14, than babies fed according to the clock. By the age of 8, their IQ (智商) scores are four to five percent higher than babies fed by a rigid timetable. This research comes from Oxford and Essex University using a sample (樣本) of 10,419 children born in the early 1990s, taking account of parental education, family income, a child's sex and age, the mother's health and feeding style. These results don't surprise me. Feeding according to schedule runs the risk of harming the rapidly growing brain by taking no account of sinking blood sugar levels.

I hope this research will put an end to advocating strictly timed baby feeding practices.

1.According to Paragraph 2, one reason why a baby cries is that it feels ________.

A.sick B.upset

C.sleepy D.hungry

2.What does the author think about Dr.King?

A.He is strict.

B.He is unkind.

C.He has the wrong idea.

D.He sets a timetable for mothers.

3.The word copperbottomed in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to ________.

A.basic B.reliable

C.surprising D.interesting

4.What does the research tell us about feeding a baby on demand?

A.The baby will sleep well.

B.The baby will have its brain harmed.

C.The baby will have a low blood sugar level.

D.The baby will grow to be wiser by the age of 8.

5.The author supports feeding the baby ________.

A.in the night

B.every four hours

C.whenever it wants food

D.a(chǎn)ccording to its blood sugar level

Since the first Earth Day in 1970,Americans have gotten a lot “greener” toward the environment.“We didn’t know at that time that there even was an environment, let alone that there was a problem with it,”says Bruce Anderson, president of Earth Day USA.

But what began as nothing important in public affairs has grown into a social movement.Business people, political leaders, university professors, and especially millions of grass-roots Americans are taking part in the movement.“The understanding has increased many, many times,”says Gaylord Nelson, the former governor from Wisconsin, who thought up the first Earth Day.

According to US government reports, emissions(排放)from cars and trucks have dropped from 10.3 million tons a year to 5.5 million tons. The number of cities producing CO beyond the standard has been reduced from 40 to 9.Although serious problems still remain and need to be dealt with, the world is a safer and healthier place.A kind of “green thinking” has become part of practices.

Great improvement has been achieved. In 1988 there were only 600 recycling programs;today in 1995 there are about 6,600.Advanced lights, motors, and building designs have helped save a lot of energy and therefore prevented pollution.

Twenty-five years ago, there were hardly any education programs for environment.Today,it’s hard to find a public school, university,or law school that does not have such a kind of program.“Until we do that, nothing else will change!”says Bruce Anderson.

“When I grow up, I want to be...”

Almost all of us have thought about,or been asked to think about, our future careers. Our answers may differ greatly. Even now your aspirations(志向,抱負(fù))may have changed from when you were in primary school.

However,it seems that career choices aren't only based on personal taste. In a survey carried out by Teens, doctors, lawyers, and bankers were some of most popular careers that people said they hoped to follow. This is similar to a survey carried out in the UK in May 2016 by job website—Co.uk,in which medicine was the top choice among UK teenagers aged between 13 and 17.

Medicine and law are two of the oldest and best known professions. Their prestige (威望) may come from the fact that doctors and lawyers are much?respected members of society, and they make good money. What's more, these professions are often seen as a sign of upward social class.

It is equally unsurprising that banking is now one of the most common career choices. Youngsters worldwide think of banking and see the money rolling in. Wealth is increasingly becoming one of the most important indicators(標(biāo)志) of a successful career.

However, not every child has the makings of doctor, lawyer, or banker. They are those who see achievement and happiness in other areas. As the Teens' survey discovered,a variety of unconventional(非傳統(tǒng)的) jobs—coffee shop owner, waiter at a fast food restaurant—are among teenagers' career choices. They can be equally interesting and rewarding jobs.

With every choice comes responsibility and challenge, and all career paths require specific education and training, you have to learn to balance optimism(樂觀主義)and confidence with being realistic about your particular talents and skills.

1. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Careers in teenagers' mind.

B. Choosing a good job is very important.

C. Teenagers in the UK like doctors.

D. The choice of career needs challenge.

2.What is the top career choice among UK teenagers aged between 13 and 17 according to the article?

3. All of the following are the benefits of being a doctor or a lawyer except .

A. respect from others

B. the oldest profession

C. high pay

D. upward social class

4. What can be learned from the last two paragraphs?

A. Careers such as waiters are not as rewarding as doctors and lawyers.

B. Specific education and training can help get a good job.

C. Responsibility is the most important when you choose a good job.

D. Optimism and confidence is more important than being realistic when choosing careers.
