April 27 is Take Our Daughters to Work Day in Britain. Started at first in the United States and brought to Britain in 1994, Take Our Daughters to Work Day has become a special day for girls between 11 and 15. On that day thousands of girls take a day off school and go together with one of their parents to their work places. The purpose of this day is to broaden girls' horizons(視野)and raise their self-confidence(自信).

For many years people have thought that boys can do better than girls in society. But actually, “girls can be whatever they want to be just like boys, whether it is a pilot, a nurse or a chief executive(主管),”says the chairman of Our Sons and Daughters Chartable Trust, an organization which supported the activity of the Day. “Now the girls have a close look at what their parents are doing and this may help them to be more self-confident when they are faced with a choice of work.”

Schools and many companies support the activity too. Palmers Green High School for girls in the north of London has made the Day a necessary part of careers education.

Zarina Bart, 15, from Palmers Green, went with her mother Gwen to her Lawyer's Office this year's Take Our Daughters to Work Day. “I learned how to fill in a legal aid(法律援助)and I read details(細(xì)節(jié))of a case. Then I went to see the actual trial(審判),” she said.

Zarina found it interesting to see her mother at work. “It's really strange seeing Mum at work--running around, getting serious and telling people what to do.” She has always liked the idea of going into law and thinks it likely that she will follow in her mother's footsteps. Having a chance to see how her mother works has given her more self-confidence.

Experts believe that girls with higher self-confidence aim higher and are more likely to be successful in life. Parents have important effect on the confidence of teenage girls. If parents believe in their daughters and show examples both at work as well as at home for them, this will give a lot of help to girls. Take Our Daughters to Work Day is surely a step in the right direction.

“Choo,Choo!”Here comes the Chunnel train. Get aboard if you want to learn more about this underground transportation system. This is an unusual form of transportation, because it is a tunnel that trains travel through and not an actual form of transportation.

The Chunnel is actually the English nickname for the Channel Tunnel. In French,it is called le tunnel sous la Manche. It is a rail tunnel beneath the English Channel at the Straits of Dover. It connects Cheriton in Kent, England with Sangatte in northern France. It is the second longest rail tunnel in the world.

Did you know that the British and the French had a race while they were building the Chunnel? The race was to see who could get to the middle of the tunnel first. The British won by a little bit. It took 15,000 workers over seven years to dig the tunnel. The tunnel was finished in 1994.

The completed Chunnel cost about $21 billion. But it all paid off, because it became very popular, very quick. Millions of people use it. Now it is getting even more popular.

There are three complete tunnels in the Chunnel. The two outside ones are the passenger trains. The small inner one is a guidance train. The guidance train is not used for transportation. Each track is exactly parallel to each other.

There are four different train systems in the Chunnel. The Eurostar is a high speed passenger service that connects London, Paris, Brussels and Lille. The Eurotunnel shuttle is a rail ferry service. Earthquakes are the shaking, rolling or sudden shock of the earth’s surface. Earthquakes happen along "fault lines" in the earth’s crust. Earthquakes can be felt over large areas although they usually last less than one minute. Earthquakes cannot be predicted -- although scientists are working on it!

Most of the time, you will notice an earthquake by the gentle shaking of the ground. You may notice hanging plants swaying or objects wobbling on shelves. Sometimes you may hear a low rumbling noise or feel a sharp jolt. A survivor of the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco said the sensation was like riding a bicycle down a long flight of stairs.

The intensity of an earthquake can be measured. One measurement is called the Richter scale. Earthquakes below 4.0 on the Richter scale usually do not cause damage, and earthquakes below 2.0 usually can’t be felt. Earthquakes over 5.0 on the scale can cause damage. A magnitude 6.0 earthquake is considered strong and a magnitude 7.0 is a major earthquake. The Northridge Earthquake, which hit Southern California in 1994, was magnitude 6.7.

Earthquakes are sometimes called temblors, quakes, shakers or seismic activity. The most important thing to remember during an earthquake is to DROP, COVER and HOLD ON. So remember to DROP to the floor and get under something for COVER and HOLD ON during the shaking.

Dolan began swimming at the age of 5,because his elder sister Kathleen was a swimmer." Whatever she
did, I wanted to beat her," he says. While he says he was a" pool rat" as a child, he didn't aggressively pursue
swimming until his freshman year in high school. Golf was his favourite sport then-he played for his high
school team until his junior year.
Dolan grew up in Arlington, Virginia, and his early development as a swimmer was under the guidance of
Rick Curl. At the University of Michigan, he trained under head coach Jon Urabancheck, who helped mold
Dolan into an Olympic champion. During breaks from school, Dolan would reunite with Curl, and in the
lead-up to Sydney, he returned home full time. In April 2000, Dolan told the Detroit Free Press," My whole
career I had gone back and forth, but now I'm spending the whole year with Rick. But where I go and swim,
I'll always be linked to Michigan and to Jon, just as I will to Rick."

could hardly breathe at the 1996 Atlanta Games. But as the top world champion and world record holder in the
400-metre individual medley(混合泳),he was determined to win Olympic gold." My legs were burning pretty
bad, and I couldn't get any oxygen. I knew it was between me and Eric, and I just gave it everything I had
coming into the wall," says Dolan. He touched first, just ahead of fellow American Eric, who got the silver.
1. Which of the following can best describe Dolan when he was young?
