【題目】Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are concerned about their own appearance and actions too much. Negative thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. A person's self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives.

Shy people, who have low respect, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need faith that they are doing "the right thing". Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior(自卑). They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one: "You're just saying that to make me feel good, I know it's not true.” It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.

Can shyness be completely got rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self respect. It is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths. Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and successful life.

【1】The first paragraph is mainly about______.

A. the cause of shyness

B. the effect of shyness on people

C. the feelings of shy people

D. the questions in the minds of shy people

2According to the writer, self-awareness is______.

A. harmful to people

B. a weak point of people

C. the cause of unhappiness

D. a good characteristic

3What is the shy people's reaction to praise?

You may have returned the book late to the library before. It is normal to pay a small fine, but how many would you have to pay if the book was returned 65 years late ?

This is a problem what John R. Rogers High School in Washington, US had to deal with recently. A copy of Gone With the Wind that was 65 years overdue was finally returned back to its library. However, the school said on December 2nd that it would not charge late fees of the book, which would have added up about $475 (2941 yuan).

The long-overdue book is checked out of the library of the high school in 1949, and seemed to disappearing until it was found in Maine, US, by Wayne Hachey. He found the book in his father’s basement and then offered to send it back to the school. “We are delightful to have the book back, but we wonder how it has been,” Lori Wyborney, principal of the school, said.

【題目】For thousands of years,we have looked for ways to measure time. Early humans found that the regular movements of the sun,the earth, the moon, and the stars made good ways to measure time. The rising and setting of the sun were used to distinguish辨別 day from night.

But,eventually, people needed to tell time more accurately,or exactly. So,by using the sun’s position in the sky, they divided the day into dawn, morning, midday and evening.

Then it was noted that the sun cast a changing shadow as it moved across the sky. Time could be told more accurately by setting up a stick and marking the positions of the sun’s shadow. It was the ancient Greeks who divided each position of this “sundial(日晷)” into hours.

But the sun doesn’t always shine. So,for the past 6,000 years, many other ways of keeping time have been tried. Slowburning candles were divided into hours, and the hourglass was invented. When all the sand in the top of an hourglass has shifted to the bottom,an hour has passed.

Later, the pendulum(擺鐘),with its regular backandforth movement of weights, was used to move the hands on a clock. Pendulums are still used in grandfather clocks.

Today, even more accurate clocks are in use, such as batteryoperated quartz clocks(石英鐘),digital clocks, and clocks run by electrical tuning forks and tiny atoms. These atomic clocks are the most accurate clocks ever invented. The exact time can be kept to within 1 second a century.

【題目】The first kind of air transportation was not a plane. It was a balloon. People traveled by balloon 100 years before there were planes or jet aircraft. Those early days of ballooning were exciting, but they were also dangerous. Sometimes the balloons fell suddenly. Sometimes they burned. However, the danger did not stop the balloonists.

The first real balloon flight was in France in 1783. Two Frenchmen, the Montgolfier brothers, made a balloon. They filled a very large paper bag with hot air. Hot air is lighter than cold air, so it goes up. The Montgolfier's hot air balloon went up 1,000 feet in the sky.

Later that same year, two other Frenchmen ascended (上升) in a basket under a balloon. They built a fire under the balloon to make the air hot. This made the balloon stay up in the air for a few hours. But their balloon was tied to the ground. So it could not go anywhere.

The first free balloon flight was in December, 1783. The balloon flew for 25 minutes over Paris. It traveled about 5.5 miles. Flying a balloon is not like flying a plane. The balloon has no engine and therefore no power of its own. The wind directs the balloon. It goes where the wind blows. The pilot can control only the altitude of the balloon to find the right wind direction. That is how a good pilot controls where the balloons goes.

Soon balloonists tried longer flights. A major event in the history of ballooning was the first long flight over water. In 1785, an American and a Frenchman flew over the English Channel.

During the nineteenth century, ballooning became a popular sport. There were balloon races in Europe. Balloons were also used by scientists to study the air and by armies in wartime. After the airplane was invented, people lost interest in balloons. Planes were much faster and easier to control. But some people today still like to go up in balloons. High up in the balloon basket, they find quietness. They have wonderful view of the world below.

【1】The first kind of air travel was in .

A. a jet plane B. an aircraft

C. a balloon D. a ship

【2】Many early balloonists lived in .

A. England B. the United States

C. Italy D. France

【3】The balloon rises if the air inside get .

A. colder B. hotter C. out D. fell
