【題目】For you, the “Clear and Bright” day that falls in every April might be no more than just another holiday — the fact that it comes with three days off school matters to most students1 (much) than the fact that it is part of the 24 solar terms (二十四節(jié)氣).

But this ancient system that Chinese people have used 2(keep) track of the time of year was added to the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (人類非物質(zhì)文化遺產(chǎn))on Nov. 30.

To be fair, the terms do sound old; they 3 (invent) thousands of years ago to offer weather information for agricultural 4 (activity). But the truth is5 they still have an influence on our lives today, even if we don’t realize it most of the time. For example, people from6 (north) China are in the habit of eating dumplings 7 the day of Winter Solstice (冬至). And on Start of Autumn, some treat 8 (they) to a big feast, especially of meat, something they call “putting on autumn weight”, or tieqiubiao. According to Chinese writer and academic Yu Shicun, the system is a philosophy of time, 9 applies to everything. And this means they are 10 (likely) to die out.

【答案】

2to keep

3were invented

4activities

5that

6northern

7on

8themselves

9which

【題目】Sometimes very odd things show up in ordinary places. In the 1800s, a strange sight began to be reported by farmers. Then in the 1970s, this strange event began to happen more and more often. People traveled for miles to stand in the fields and take photos of something they couldn't easily explain. What were they looking at? It was the crop circles — large and complex designs set into the middle of ordinary farm field. No one could understand how these huge designs were made.

Crop circles are found most often in fields of wheat, corn, or rice. They are usually created overnight, although some are reported to have appeared during the day. They have been seen all around the world, in more than 70 different countries. Scientists have found that the plants inside a crop circle are drier than the ones outside it. The plant stems () are bent and not broken in most crop circles, and sometimes the soil in the design has more iron than the soil outside of the design. Unfortunately, these facts alone do not help scientists answer their questions about crop circles. These facts only make them more mysterious.

Some people believe crop circles are made by UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects) landing in farm fields. Others think aliens are leaving us messages in the beautiful designs. Still others believe Earth energy under the ground makes plants bend over in designs. Some people say they actually made the crop circles with special equipment. Scientists have found some crop circles that are certainly made by people, but they are usually a little different from other crop circles. So who makes crop circles and why they make them can't be explained to this very day.

1It's generally thought that crop circles _____.

A. have very frightening designs

B. happen in the same places

C. are found in terrible places

D. are made during the night

2What happens to the paints inside the crop circles?

A. They are broken.

B. They die very soon.

C. They are bent.

D. They need little water.

3Which of the following have the scientists proved?

A. Earth energy is one reason for crop circles' appearance.

B. UFOs help create some crop circles.

C. There actually are crop circles made by aliens.

D. Some crop circles are man-made.

4What is the best title for the text?

A. The History of Crop Circles

B. Different Designs of Crop Circles

C. Crop Circles: The Unsolved Mystery

D. Crop Circles: The Great Influence on Farms

【題目】閱讀理解。

There has been a dramatic increase in the number of natural disasters over the past few years, and it is assumed that global warming and climate change could cause even more disasters in the future. Some of the world’s leading cities are facing disasters like floods and heat waves.

London

Londons flood defences are getting older. Since 1982, the Thames Barrier(水閘)has protected the city from the threat of flooding, but it was only designed to last until 2030 and close once every two or three years. About 26 years later the barrier now closes five or six times a year and according to Environment Agency predictions, by 2050 the barrier will be closed on almost every tide if the problem is not addressed.

There are 26 underground stations, 400 schools, 16 hospitals, an airport and 80 billion worth of property in London’s flood risk area, so large scale flooding would be disastrous.

Paris

Over a six week period in July and August 2003, more than 1 1,400mainly elderly peopledied in France from dehydration(脫水)and extremely high body temperature in a deadly heat wave. Heat waves of similar intensity(強(qiáng)度)are expected every seven years by 2050, so what can be done to make sure such a disaster does not happen again?

One solution is to have air-conditioners installed in elderly care homes. But this is considered a short-term solution, as the increase in demand for electricity also increases carbon emissions(排放).

In Paris the local authorities are encouraging architects to design new types of buildings such as the building “Flower Tower,” which uses a covering of bamboo to act as a natural air-conditioner.

Shanghai

Shanghai is the fastest growing city on Earth. It has a population of 18 million and is only 4 meters above sea level. Sea levels are predicted to rise by 20 cm within the next century.

An estimated 250,000 people move to Shanghai every year in search of work, placing extra demands on energy consumption. China relies heavily on coalfired power stations, but these emissions increase temperatures and, in turn, warmer seas increase the risk of typhoons.

【1】What problem should be settled now in London?

AHow to protect the citys property

BWhere to build its flood defences

CHow to use the Thames Barrier to protect the city

DHow to improve the function of the old flood defences

【2】Which of the following measures can’t solve the heat wave disaster in Paris?

APutting up new types of buildings with a covering of bamboo

BHaving air-conditioners installed in elderly care homes

CForbidding the city to buildFlower Tower”

DEncouraging architects to design new types of buildings

【3】The major threats to Shanghai are

Aincreasing population and coal-fired power stations

Brising sea levels and typhoons

Cextremely high temperature and rising sea levels

Dextra demands on energy consumption and typhoons

【4】The purpose of the passage is

Ato tell us how to protect the big cities

Bto give advice on how to defend natural disasters

Cto explain what causes flood and heat waves

Dto warn us of the increasing natural disasters in big cities

【5】Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

ABig Cities Facing Big Disasters

BBig Disasters in the Future

CThe Increase of Natural Disasters

DSolutions to Natural Disasters

Adidas cooperated with Silicon Valley-based start up Carbon to create the shoe, which uses a new technology called digital light synthesis(合成).

Although the common 3D printed materials are often rigid(僵硬的),the new materials are flexible with Silicon Valley-based start up Carbon's technology.

The technology works by using UV lasers to project a pattern for a midsole(鞋底夾層)liquid. It tums the liquid into a solid and the result is a flexible, but more durable midsole.

The technology could make the most of the time and money to produce the shoes in large quantities which may be loved by humans in the future.
