[1]To most Chinese students, studying abroad could be hard work. There are lots of difficulties they should face every day—the language barrier, culture shock, gaps between Eastern and Western lifestyles, expensive tuition fees and endless research projects.
。2]To Song Yinan, a 19-year-old Shenzhen girl, however, studying abroad was an unforgettable experience. In her book, “Kiki’s London Diary”, she tells her stories in an optimistic way.
。3]Probably the biggest difficulty Chinese students will meet is ___________. For example, in a story written at the beginning of her first term in London, Song suffered some embarrassment during a welcome party, where she was introduced to some dizzy drinks. However, she found that she couldn’t read most of the English names of the drinks and drank only cola and fruit juice. She described how red her face was and also the impatience of some other students as they stared the poor girl.
[4]Song says in an interview that it is still a good experience for her anyway. Although it sounds like “l(fā)osing face” to most Chinese students, she says it is normal when you study abroad and she is happy to share the story with others.
。5]During her stay in Britain, Song was like an explorer. She discovered happiness in London everyday. She found happiness in a computer on which she could search for information on Chinese websites, at a low-price grocery, and form making friends with Britain students.
。6]Song was a high school student then and had never traveled abroad alone before. This is why Song’s parents say in the book’s forward that they were a little bit worried about their daughter.
。7]However, throughout the book, readers can feel the optimism and persistence of this strong-willed girl. Her study and life experiences in London are to delight any Chinese studying abroad or who plans to do so.

You may not realize it, but you are doing more than just studying when you are at school. The school is also the place where you learn__________. But this is not always easy. What can you do if you just don’t like one of your classmates?
If you discover that you have problems getting along with your classmates or friends, the most important thing to learn is tolerance. Tolerance is the ability to realize and respect the differences in others. We can not change the way that other people do, so it is important to learn to live happily with them.
Tolerance will make everyone get on better with each other. Knowing others constantly makes us  understand others’differences. Something different does not exactly mean that it is bad. Tolerance teaches us to keep an even temper and an open mind.
You need to remember an old saying, “Treat others how you want to be treated.” You would like to be treated kindly by your classmates, so it is important to treat them kindly too. If you tolerate something, it does not mean that you have to like it. No one is asking you to change who you are or what you believe in.Tolerance just means that you should respect the differences in others and not try to make them change.
It is important to practice tolerance, because it will make everyone’s life easier. Learn to accept people for their different abilities and interests. The world is very different, and practicing tolerance in your own school and city can help make a difference.

Scientists have determined it's not advisable to hurry marriage. But what’s the best age to wed?
When Avril Lavigne announced she was splitting from her husband, comments from her friends suggested that she was only 21 when she tied the knot and later she said that she realized she'd been too young to make such a life-altering decision. Could fellow young celebrity divorcées(離婚者) Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson, and Britney Spears have also hit the same age-related issue?
The Magic Number
There are practical reasons for the mid-20s dividing line, and most of them boil down to two biggies: education and money.
It turns out that the more years of higher education a woman has under her belt on her wedding day, the lower the chances that she'll get divorced ... and by 25, you're more likely to have earned a degree or two. Educated women tend to be more confident about who they are and less willing to settle for a man who doesn't meet their standards.
Odds(可能性) are that by 25 you're also supporting yourself, so there's less incentive(刺激; 鼓勵(lì))for you to rush into marriage because you're seeking financial security from him. But the marriage-related benefits of working and having money of your own go beyond feeling secure. Learning to budget your cash carefully when you're single will help you avoid financial problems—one of the main causes of couple fights—for the rest of your life.
Knowing the Real You
At 25, you've had time for some crucial life experiences, including a relationship or two that may have improved your Mr. Right radar. You've probably dated enough to have a better idea of what you don't want in a man, which makes it easier to know what you can live with and can't live without.
Perhaps the most important aspect of waiting is that you'll know what your goals and values really are. While you don't want to marry someone just like you, marriage is a lot easier if you two share a similar outlook on life.
Twenty-four and already married to the man of your dreams? Don't worry: Many young marriages survive. But given the choice, you might consider putting off the big day until your mid-20s or later.

The computer makes doing schoolwork easier for me than it was for my mom and dad. For example, when writing book reports and stories, I use Microsoft Word instead of a pen and paper. That way, after my teacher checks my work, I can go back and make revisions without having to rewrite the whole thing. And Microsoft Word has a spell check! I use it all the time.
For English class, we are reading The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton. As pre-reading homework, my teacher asked us to research teenage groups on the Internet. I tried Google, Encarta, and Yahoo first, and finally found an article on Time. com .
For geography homework on the United States, I used Encarta to learn about the Mississippi River. I needed to find out how deep the river is, how its widths and depths are different, what states it runs through, and what kinds of fish live in it. I used the information to show how the geography of a country influences its economy. For example, the river’s trade paths, the number of fish caught in it and the tourists it attracts directly affect Southerners’ jobs and incomes.
I never go to the library to do research. It takes too much time. Since I live in New York City and both my parents work, getting to the library isn’t always easy. For a big task or research project, I used to stay at the library to read, or sign out whatever books or magazines I needed. Now being able to find the information in my own living room makes everything a lot simpler. Online dictionaries and encyclopedias (百科全書(shū)) also save time.
Sometimes, I think the computer spoils my generation because it is so easy --- at least physically. But computers are not like television, which does the thinking for you. You still have to use your mind. I prefer using a computer, easy, fun, and fast.
小題1:What does the writer use when he writes book reports and stories? (no more than 3 words)
小題2:Why doesn’t the writer go to the library to do research? (no more than 6 words)

Directions: Read the passage carefully and answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.
We’d like to agree with the recent report comparing the difference between a TV and a computer: When you use one you turn your brain on, with the other you turn it off.
Your brain may not be the only thing the TV turns off. It seems that men who watch a lot of TV are more sedentary, eat more food and are generally much fatter. Similar result have been found for women. Experts think that watching TV means that not only are you sedentary, but you have to watch food advertisement inducing you to eat more. The food that you are being induced to eat may not be good enough for you health.
If you are a couch potato, here are some suggestions:
Tape a piece of paper to the back of your remote control or TV Guide, and every time you watch a show, note how long you sit there and what you eat..
Review the record after a week. This can be a shock.
Don’t have a TV in your bedroom; having a TV in your bedroom greatly increases viewing time and if you tend to eat while viewing, the results are obvious.
Think of a healthy way instead of watching TV that you like. This can be as simply as walking the dog or walking to visit a neighbor regularly.
After a few months you are likely to be surprised about how much more time you seem to have and how much better you feel.
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)
小題1:The phrase “a couch potato” best describe a person who ___________.
小題2:The author believes watching TV _______________ your brain.
小題3:Why shouldn’t you put a TV set in your bedroom?______________.
小題4:According to the passage, which maybe the healthy ways? ___________.

Certainly dustmen prefer to be known as “Refuse Collection and Disposal Officers”. You may think that this is rather silly, and that it is better to call a spade. But dustmen can be just as sensitive as people of any other occupations, though we must admit that their job is not the most romantic one in the world. We often take dustmen for granted. Perhaps because they usually come very early in the morning, before most people are up, we are inclined to forget that they exist. Our dustbins are emptied regularly, but we rarely stop to think about the men who do this. However, it is one of the most important jobs in the world, and when there are no dustmen________, the general public soon becomes aware that something is wrong.

Recently, the dustmen of England went on strike for higher wages. During the first few days it was regarded as a joke. For some reason, jokes have always been made about dustmen, and some people thought this strike was very amusing. But when the first two weeks had passed, and the dustbins were overflowing in nearly every backyard in the country, the joke did not seem so funny any more. As the strike continued, people could not bear the accumulation of rubbish around their dustbins, and they looked for other places in which to get rid of it. Even when the strike was over, and the wages dispute had been settled, it took several weeks for the country to get cleaned up completely, as so much rubbish had accumulated. Perhaps now the English people appreciate the work of their dustmen rather more highly, and won’t take them for granted any more.

Martin had just finished high school. He would go to college at the far end of the city. He didn’t want to live there, and he didn’t want to take the bus either. So his father agreed to buy him a car.
His father spent all his summer teaching him how to drive, from the ABC to the XYZ. Thinking of the great feeling of driving a new car, Martin learned very quickly, and received his driver’s license just before his eighteenth birthday.
The second day, all the family, and their dog, went to a car shop. Martin spent almost all the morning going from one car to another. Finally he saw a red Blue Bird. He had a test drive on the open ground, and called out, “This is what I want, Dad!” When everything was done, they were ready to leave.
Martin climbed into the front seat. He said excitedly, “It’s my first day driving alone. Dad, Mom, and Poo! Enjoy it!”
His dad immediately took the back seat, right behind the new driver. Martin wondered why his father chose that seat, for his father always enjoyed looking in front.
So he said, smiling, “I’m sure you’re back there to have a change after all those weeks of sitting in the front seat teaching me how to drive.”

As a nation, we’re getting fatter
In Britain, people with a healthy body weight are in the minority.
Nearly two thirds of men (65%)and more than half of women(56%)are either overweight or obese(病態(tài)肥胖的).
Nearly a quarter of men and women (24%)are obese.
The number of overweight and obese people in the UK is increasing. A recent government report showed that if current trends continue, the majority of people in the country will be obese by 2050, including 60% of men and 40% of women.
What is a healthy weight?
You can find out whether your weight is within the healthy range by calculating your body mass index or BMI. Check your BMI using our BMI chart.
For many people, it’s just not realistic to aim for a so-called “ideal weight” for your height. Instead of focusing on a target weight, it may be more helpful to work on changing your lifestyle, which can help you reach a healthier weight.
Small changes can have big effects
Most people gain weight throughout their lives, often without realizing it. Very small changes can result in large weight gains over time, For example by simply eating an excess of 50 calories per day – just half a biscuit – you could gain 5 pounds or 2kg over a year. So in 5 years’ time you could be over 25 pounds or 10 kg heavier.
But good news is that small changes of your lifestyle can lead reduction in body weight. This may sound simple, but in reality it takes commitment and effort to change the habits of a lifetime. The day-to-day choices we make about our lifestyle have the greatest effect on our weight.
Losing weight and keeping it off!
The best way to lose weight is to eat healthily, eat smaller amounts and        . This will help you to take in less energy from food and increase the amount of energy you burn off by being more physically active.
