I clearly remember the day when my little brother was born: January 1,1994. One of my favorite family photos shows me lying with my mother in the hospital bed, happy but unaware of the small, sleeping baby in the background.

I stayed with my grandparents for the weekend of my brother’s birth, excited about my new brother but not yet aware of what having a little brother would mean. I didn’t truly realize what was going on until we were in the hospital room at Duke University—coincidentally ,the same room in which I had been born two years earlier.

When I looked at my brother for the first time, I felt a mixture of fear and interest. Little did I know that small, pink creature would grow up to be one of my favorite people in the world.

In reality, though I am two years older than my brother, I am more often than not the real baby in the family. I am very lacking when it comes to common sense. Instructions constantly confuse me and I frequently find myself totally puzzled by things like knowing how to start the washing machine or manage the storage settings on my iPhone.

That’s where Gibson comes in. The poor kid has had to guide me through more tasks than I would care to admit, but he never complains. Though I should probably be told to figure it out myself, he always comes through.

I’m envious of his ability to readily answer the ever-present, “What do you want to do with your life?” question at family gatherings. “Be a doctor,” he says—a solid answer, completely opposite to my shaky one, “Well, I’m an English major, so…”

My brother truly is my best friend. No one understands me better, and there isn’t anyone else I would want to be stuck with in our family. I may not have a clear idea of where I’m headed, but he is stuck with me.

1.How did the author feel when he saw his brother for the first time?

A. Angry and sad.

B. Excited and moved.

C. Curious and scared.

D. Happy and interested.

2.What does the underlined sentence in the fourth paragraph mean?

A. My brother is the real baby in the family.

B. In fact, I seem to be less mature than my little brother.

C. My brother gets more love from the family than I do.

D. I am growing more slowly than my brother.

3.What does the brother often help the author do?

A. Help him deal with many daily tasks.

B. Help him with his studies.

C. Give him advice on how to choose a major.

D. Comfort him when he is in a bad mood.

4.What is the best title for this text?

A. My Strange Family Gatherings

B. The Real Baby in the Family

C. Stuck with Me—My Not-So-Little Little Brother

D. The Feeling of Having a Brother

When the weather is getting cold, it is good to have something warm eat. Hotpot is the delicious choice.

Hotpot has a long history in China. Eating hotpot are more than just feeding yourself. Families or friends sit around a table and eating from a steaming pot. They cook, chat and sometimes drink together.

You can put almost anything else in a hotpot. Meat, seafood, vegetable, tofu and bean noodles are the most popular ingredients. Meat, especially beef and mutton, is often cut as thinner as paper. It should not be cooked too long, otherwise it will lose their tenderness.

If you don’t like spicy food, you can still join in. Apart to non-spicy soup, there is a kind of hotpot what is split into two. One side is spicy, while the other side isn’t. So everyone can have a good time while eating and getting warm!

A few years ago, a company called Space Marketing came up with a plan to send a mile–long advertisement into space. To advertising agencies (機構(gòu)), it would have been “a dream come true”. However, advertising standards agencies finally decided not to allow Space Marketing to go ahead with their plans and they were forced to give them up.

Space may indeed be the final place for advertisers, because on Earth we are already surrounded by advertising wherever we are and whatever we are doing. Apart from the obvious adverts that we see every day on TV, and in newspapers and magazines, there is a whole ‘other world’ of advertising messages for our attention. There are ads that we see on the side of the bus we catch to work, for example. And what about the logos (商標(biāo)) we see on the clothing of the people we walk past in the streets?

Most of the time, we are probably not even aware of (意識到的) these less obvious advertising methods, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t work. Take ‘product placement’, for example. You are in a cinema, watching the latest Hollywood movie. Look carefully at the make of car your favorite actor is driving. And what about his watch? Can you see what brand it is? Chances are, you can, and the company that owns the brand is likely to have paid thousands for it to appear in the film.

So, whether Space Marketing finally succeeds in sending ads into space or not is perhaps less important than it might seem. This would not change a thing. Our everyday lives are already strongly influenced by advertising whether we realize it or not.

1.What happened to the plan of sending an ad into space?

A. It came to nothing.

B. It was a dream come true.

C. It had to wait a few years before it was carried out.

D. It was supported by the advertising standards agencies.

2.How does the author explain the “other world” of advertising messages?

A. By showing research findings.

B. By explaining research findings.

C. By giving instructions.

D. By using examples.

3.As a form of advertising, product placement ________.

A. costs a little

B. doesn’t work

C. is less obvious than TV ads

D. mainly appears in Hollywood movies

4.What does the author suggest at the end of the text?

A. We live in a world of advertising.

B. We’ve changed a lot because of advertising.

C. Space Marketing leads in the advertising industry.

D. Space ads will mark the beginning of a new world.

A child who has once been pleased with a tale likes, as a rule, to have it retold in almost the same words, but this should not lead parents to treat printed fairy stories as formal texts. It is always much better to tell a story than read it out of a book, and, if a parent can produce what, in the actual situation of the time and the child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better.

A charge made against fairy tales is that they harm the child by frightening him or making him sad thinking. To prove the latter, one would have to show in a controlled experiment that children who have read fairy stories were more often sorry for cruelty than those who had not. As to fears, there are, I think, some cases of children being dangerously terrified by some fairy story. Often, however, this arises from the child having heard the story once. Familiarity with the story by repetition turns the pain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced and mastered.

There are also people who object to fairy stories on the grounds that they are not objectively true, that giants, witches, two - headed dragons, magic carpets, etc. do not exist; and that, instead of being fond of the strange side in fairy tales, the child should be taught to learn the reality by studying history. I find such people, I must say so peculiar that I do not know how to argue with them. If their case were sound, the world should be full of mad men attempting to fly from New York to Philadelphia on a stick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their beloved girl-friend.

No fairy story ever declared to be a description of the real world and no clever child has ever believed that it was.

1.The author considers that a fairy story is more effective when it is _______.

A. repeated without any change

B. treated as a joke

C. made some changes by the parent

D. set in the present

2.According to the passage, great fear can take place in a child when the story is _______.

A. in a realistic setting

B. heard for the first time

C. repeated too often

D. told in a different way

3.The advantage claimed for repeating fairy stories to young children is that it _______.

A. makes them less fearful

B. develops their power of memory

C. makes them believe there is nothing to be afraid of

D. encourages them not to have strange beliefs

4.One of the reasons why some people are not in favor of fairy tales is that _______.

A. they are full of absurd imagination

B. they just make up the stories which are far from the truth

C. they are not interesting

D. they make teachers of history difficult to teach
