One spring break when I was a senior in college, some friends and I drove to the West Coast. Along the way we stopped and spent two days on a farm in Idaho. There had once been dairy farmers, but at the time of our visit they were retired and the cows had been sold. Still, the place was a real farm, and we got to work a little, walk a lot,and eat great food. We brushed two huge horses, helped fix some fences and generally had a good time. The snow?capped mountains in the distance and the wild flowers in the yard made the place nice. I liked the life there.
Though I did not grow up to be a farmer,I still manage to spend as much time on other people's farms as I can. For me,it beats a holiday inn. Next to the scenery and the food, the work itself is always the best part. It makes me feel good.
If you haven't planned your summer vacation yet, maybe it would be a good idea to spend some time on a farm. Many farmers open their doors to travellers, who can expect all different kinds of accommodations (食宿) and experiences. If you are looking for something to give you the flavour of farm life but feel mostly like taking a vacation, you could spend a weekend at a farm offering "farm vacations".
One day back at that farm in Idaho,my friends and I planted trees in the yard. Being in such a nice place inspired us to make up a little song to sing to each tree as we put it in its hole. Fifteen years later that funny song still comes to me when I am working in my garden. Farm vacations can make a deep im?pression.

Here's something to think about the next time you ask your teacher for help: trying hard to do schoolwork on your own can help you learn. According to a recent study, the more you try while you are learning new information, the better you can remember it later.
This might surprise you. When teachers are presenting new information, they often give students lots of help. But a new study shows this may not be the best way to support learning. "Don't be too quick to get help when learning something new,"education expert Manu Kapur said. "Try to work on it your?self even if it means trying different ways." Kapur came up with the idea that trying hard can lead to better learning. Then he tested it out on students in Singapore. He separated students into two groups. In the first group, students were asked to solve maths problems with the teacher's help. In the second group, students were asked to solve the same problems by helping one another, instead of getting help from the teacher.
With the teacher's help, students in the first group were able to find the correct answers. Students in the second group did not solve the problems cor?rectly. But they did come up with a lot of good ideas.
The students were then tested on what they had learned. The group with?out any help from a teacher scored much higher than the group who had help. Kapur said working to find the answers helped students understand the process (過(guò)程) ,not just the solution.
Kapur's advice for kids is to put a lot of effort (努力) into learning some?thing new rather than going to your teacher for help. "Simply doing a little work or nothing at all won't work,"says Kapur. "Try to solve a problem in as many ways as possible.”

For me,my great moment came when I actually decided to accept an oppor?tunity to teach English in Shanghai. There were times when I almost gave up because of fear. But in the end I came here.
Last summer,a Canadian-Chinese woman who teaches in Shanghai just happened to come to the place where I was working in the Seattle area. We talked and I said I had always wanted to teach abroad. She said,"Come to our school. Okay,"I replied, but I wasn't sure if I meant it.
I We met later for coffee. She answered all of my questions about the school, and gave me the website address and the e-mail address of the person to contact. It took six months for me to finally decide on the job.
First of all,in Shanghai there are many places to eat western food and lots of interesting things to do. Also, there is a great subway system with di?rections and stops posted in English. Finding your way around is a challenge in a new place. But that isn't hard here. Taxis are very cheap;you can always jump in one and get home. There are also a lot of westerners in Shanghai,so it is fairly easy to ask for directions. Young Chinese people are much more likely to speak English and they are wonderfully helpful.
I earn almost $ 1,000 per month and live in a nice rent-free apartment. My biggest expense (開(kāi)銷) has been food as I am a vegetarian (素食者) and also on a diet. I still have not got used to the traditional Chinese food, but if you like it,you'll be in heaven.
Here I have a good place to live in,new friends,a high salary, and a good job. In the US,getting a job at my age has been next to impossible for a woman.
6. We can infer that at first the writer .
A. wasn't interested in teaching abroad at all
B. wasn't sure whether to accept the job to teach in China
C. knew she would be popular as a teacher in China
D. thought the Canadian-Chinese woman was joking
7. According to the passage,it seems that .
A. there are no good restaurants for the writer in Shanghai
B. the writer sometimes feels lonely in Shanghai
C. the writer doesn't like travelling in Shanghai
D. the writer likes her life in Shanghai
8. What does the underlined word "that" in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Living in a new place.
B. Dealing with a challenge.
C. Finding your way around.
D. Taking a taxi.
9. According to the last but one paragraph, the writer .
A. is satisfied with her weight
B. doesn't have to pay for rent
C. doesn't like eating vegetables
D. is crazy about the traditional Chinese food
10. We can infer the writer most probably ,
A. spends lots of money each month
B. lived alone when she was in the United States
C. had a very good job before she left her country
D. feels happy to have made the decision to teach in Shanghai
