【答案】Dear Peter,
Knowing that you are involved in the Whole-book Reading Activity, I’d like to pick one from so many famous Chinese books—Journey to the West.
Basically, the novel is about Tang Sanzang’s journey to fetch back some Buddist scriptures and the difficulties he and his followers face in between. Along the way, Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing have to battle lots of demons, who all want their master because his flesh will give immortality to anyone who eats it.
Does it sound captivating? If you want to give it a try, you’d better get a Chinese dictionary at hand for reference as it’s written in old Chinese. I wish you would have fun reading it.
Yours,
Li Hua

【題目】 It was back in 2014. I learned I needed an operation to remove the tumor (腫瘤). Hearing the word “cancer” was the first shock, but knowing the surgeon would have to cut the front of my neck open was a lot to swallow. I was relieved to learn that thyroid (甲狀腺) cancer can be treated if caught early, but 1 wasn’t thrilled it would mean a lifelong scar front and center on my neck.
Back at home, I looked at my reflection in the mirror. I admired my neck, running my finger across a delicate gold chain I wore. Then came a tiny voice, “Mommy!” My then five year -old son. Jack, appeared in the mirror behind me. Our reflection was a big reality check. See, my son didn’t know I had been diagnosed (診斷) with the Big C, or that I was having an operation. I patiently explained my condition to him and told him I would have a scar on my neck after the operation.
I never had any intentions of hiding the scar. I didn’t want my son to think my scar was something to be ashamed of. I was his role model and I needed to set a good example. Bad things can happen, but it’s how you deal with them that matters.
The operation was successful. The recovery process, bearing it all, in the grocery store, out to dinner with family and on the summer camp pickup line, made me realize, if I could get through this phase (階段),I could bear the scar of survival forever. The scar proves I looked at fear in the face and won.
People will ask about my scar even though it’s a very thin. dull line five years later. That means I have the chance to educate others about thyroid cancer and how they should. self-check their necks and remind their doctors to do the same, at yearly physicals. To me, the scar is like a superhero stamp.

【題目】 Researchers continue to show the power behind our sense of smell. Recent studies have found, among other things, that the smell of foods like pizza can cause uncontrollable anger in drivers on roads.
The review explains that smell is unique in its effects on the brain. According to Conrad King, the researcher who carried out the review, "more than any other senses, the sense of smell goes through the logical part of the brain and acts on the systems concerned with feelings. This is why the smell of baking bread can destroy the best intentions of a dieter."
Smell, which dictates the unbelievable complexity of food tastes, has always been the least understood of our senses. Our noses are able to detect up to 10,000 distinct smells. Our ability to smell and taste this extremely large range of smells is controlled by something like 1,000 genes (基因), which make up an amazing 3% of the human genome. Researchers Richard Axel and Linda Buck were together awarded a Nobel Prize in 2004 for their ground-breaking research on the nature of this extraordinary sense. These two scientists were the first to describe the family of 1,000 olfactory (嗅覺) genes and to explain how our olfactory system works.
According to one study in the research review, smelling fresh pizza or even the packaging of fast foods can be enough to make drivers feel impatient with other road users. They are then more likely to speed and experience uncontrollable anger on roads. The most reasonable explanation is that these can all make drivers feel hungry, and therefore desperate to satisfy their appetites.
In contrast, the smells of peppermint and cinnamon were shown to improve concentration levels as well as reduce drivers’ impatience. Similarly, the smells of lemon and coffee appeared to promote clear thinking and mental focus.
However, the way genes regulate smell differs from person to person. A study by researchers in Israel has identified at least 50 olfactory genes which are switched on in some people and not in others. They believe this may explain why some of us love some smells and tastes while others hate them. The Israel researchers say their study shows that nearly every human being shows a different pattern of active and inactive smell-detecting receptors.
【1】What did Richard Axel and Linda Buck find out?
A.The category of food smells.

【2】Which of the following can help people concentrate?
A.Bread.B.Fruits.
C.Coffee.D.Fast food.
【3】What do we know from the last paragraph?
A.Some people can recognize up to 50 smells.
B.Every person has a different pattern of genes.
C.Different people are sensitive to different smells.
D.There are still some olfactory genes to be found out.
【4】What is the passage mainly about?
A.Logic and behaviour.
B.Smell and its influence.

【題目】 Recently, the most heated topic of “which is the right bin for my garbage” has swept China.
Shanghai is among China’ s first cities to introduce garbage classification (垃圾分類) and also the country’s most serious in its performing. Since July 1,2019, Shanghai residents have been required by law to sort garbage into four different categories, or they could face fines. Individuals, including tourists, can be fined 200 yuan for failing to sort their waste properly, while companies and institutions can be fined up to 50,000 yuan.
The government has set up online apps to handle sorting questions, and announced guidelines to address the “one-size-fits-all” method. The country is about to invest over 21 billion yuan in the construction of garbage processing facilities to meet demands. Now it’s introducing artificial intelligence into its waste management system, by setting up little cameras in many sets of bins.
However, not every face can be recognized by the smart dustbin until you register for the system. Once registration is complete, users will scan a QR code on the bin, which then opens it up to allow for garbage disposal (處理). Now, each household gets one special QR code for throwing out waste. Here, the intelligent bins don’t just calculate garbage weight, they also help residents gain rewards by collecting points through the special app.
China is stepping into the age of compulsory garbage sorting with its cities revising laws on garbage classification. For Shanghai, sixty percent of the city is expected to carry out garbage sorting by the end of 2019, and 90 percent by 2020. Garbage sorting is, without doubt, a costly but worthwhile endeavor. 【1】What is the correct order in using smart garbage sorting system?

【4】Why does our country push ahead with compulsory garbage sorting?
A.To build a garbage sorting system.

When 1 stepped off a ship in New York Harbor in 1949, I was a nine-year-old war refugee, who had lost his mother and was coming to live with the father he did not know. My mother, Eleni Gatzoyiannis, had been imprisoned and shot for sending my sisters and me to freedom.
I was thirteen years old when I entered Chandler Junior High. Shortly after I arrived, I was told to select a hobby to pursue during“club hours.” The idea of hobbies and clubs made no sense to my immigrant ears, but I decided to follow the prettiest girl in my class.
