I was a high school student then, from low-income family. So I have to work to support my family. My first one job was to clean tables in a small restaurant.I still remember going there early and felt anxious of the new world. I worked harder because I was afraid of losing the job. At night, I was sometimes very tired to do my homework. And I came to understand this was not easy to earn money, and that knowledge could change my lives. So I think what I learned from the job was much more important as what I earned.

In ancient Egypt,a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his shop simply by making changes to its environment.Modern businesses have been following his lead, with more tactics(策略).
One tactic involves where to display the goods. For example, stores place fruits and vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk food(垃圾食品) later in their trip.In department stores, the women’s shoe section is generally next to the women’s cosmetics(化妝品) section:while the shop assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over and find some cosmetics they might want to try later.
Besides, businesses seek to appeal to customers’ senses.Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping,so they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day.Music sells goods, too.Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wines went up.
When it comes to the selling of houses, businesses also use highly rewarding tactics. They find that customers make decisions in the first few seconds upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity.A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the pool through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these $10 million houses.
1.Why do stores usually display fruits and vegetables in the first section?
A.To save customers time.
B.To show they are high quality foods.
C.To help sell junk food.
D.To sell them at discount prices.
2.According to Paragraph 3,which of the following encourages customers to buy?
A.Opening the store early in the morning.
B.Displaying British wines next to French ones.
C.Inviting customers to play music.
D.Filling the store with the smell of fresh bread.
3.What is the California builder’s story intended to prove?
A.The house structure is a key factor customers consider.
B.The more costly the house is,the better it sells.
C.An ocean view is much to the customers’ taste.
D.A good first impression increases sales.
4.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To explain how businesses turn people into their customers.
B.To introduce how businesses have grown from the past.
C.To report researches on customer behavior.
D.To show dishonest business practices.

Some 30,000 years ago, artists who lived in caves in Europe painted pictures of the animals around them: panthers, hyenas, rhinos, cave lions, mammoths and other creatures which have been extinct for a long time.
The artwork, more than a thousand drawings, is considered the oldest group of human cave drawings which have ever been discovered. They were preserved because the cave was sealed---closed off--for more or less 23,000 years.
Fast forward to December 18, 1994, a group of French cave scientists were exploring caves in southern France. Jean Marie Chauvet, who led the group then, describes the process of discovering the cave paintings. “At that time I was in the front, Eliette just walked behind me, Christian behind. Eliette said she saw two marks with red ochre(赭石) and she said, ‘They came here.’ And at this very moment everything began. The drawings and everything linked to the parietal art(壁畫). That is where it started.”
Cave art expert Jean Clotttes reviewed the paintings. “I was amazed at the number of paintings there were and paintings of their quality and particularly in front of the panel of the horses.”
Scientific analysis confirmed the prehistoric date of the artwork. Studies showed the drawings were created tens of thousands of years ago, before human history was written. The United Nations’ cultural agency UNESCO lists the cave as a World Heritage Site. They say that the drawings form a remarkable expression of early human artistic creation of grand excellence and variety.
The Chauvet Cave has been named after the explorer who first entered it. However, its environment and drawings are too fragile to be visited by human beings. So the cave is closed, and only people there for scientific purposes can go inside and see the artwork.
However, French authorities asked experts to create an exact copy of the cave, called Pont d’Arc Cavern. The copy, which we also called replica, cost more than 59 million dollars to build. It opened at the end of April in France.
Pascal Terrasse is the president of the cavern. He says everyone will be able to experience the thrill of looking at drawings made by the first humans in Europe. He says the place is magic because it is done so well. Authorities say they think as many as 400,000 people will be allowed to visit Pont d’Arc Cavern every year.
1.According to Jean Clottes’ words in Paragraph 4, the paintings in the cave were .
A. abstract B. superior C. creative D. inspiring
2.Which of the follow statements is TRUE about the Chauvet Cave?
A. It was closed off for more than 30,000 years.
B. It is thought to be the origin of modern parietal art.
C. The environment and artwork there are very easy to damage.
D. The majority of drawings there are about the extinct animals.
3.The purpose of creating Pndt d’Arc Cavern is to .
A. show admiration for the earliest artists in Europe
B. arouse visitors’ awareness of protecting ancient art
C. offer visitors chances to view the wonderful artwork
D. collect money for the perseverance of the Chauvet Cave

When I was in primary school, sometimes I would meet a girl of the same age as me. Lisa was never active, but she was always very sweet and nice. In the 5th grade she came to my class. She was absent a lot, and one day I had the courage to ask why. She told me she was sick, and she explained she wore a wig (假發(fā))because her medicine made her lose her hair. Since then, anytime Lisa came to class, I would hang around with her on the playground.
I received much ridicule (嘲笑)from my friends for this because they thought I was ignoring them for Lisa. My family education taught me to be nice, and I felt Lisa’s needs were much more important than others I knew.
It had been months since Lisa was in our class, and one day our teacher was crying. She explained Lisa died the day before and would no longer be our classmate. She told us Lisa had fought a battle (斗爭(zhēng)) with cancer for years.
I was shocked. Lisa never spoke of her illness as if it could kill her. Well, all these years I have kept Lisa in my mind and heart. When I go through the important events in my life, I think of Lisa.
I’ve had a strong wish recently to find her mother and father. I’d like to tell them that though they never met me, their daughter had a sweet effect on my life. I have no idea what her parents’ first names are. I write to your column (專欄) and hope you can point me in the right direction.
Lisa was such a lovely girl. Maybe her parents would be comforted by the fact that after all these years they are not the only ones who remember her.
1.Why was the author being laughed at?
A. Because she wore a wig to school.
B. Because she always played with Lisa.
C. Because she cried in the classroom.
D. Because she lost her friends because of Lisa.
2.What can we know about the author from the passage?
A. She had known Lisa since they were born.
B. She has been to Lisa’s house.
C. She has a good family education.
D. She was the first one to know about Lisa’s death.
3.What did the author learn from Lisa?
A. To keep your illness a secret.
B. To be nice to everyone everywhere.
C. To face challenges in life bravely.
D. To put others’ needs above yours.
4.The author wrote this passage mainly to .
A. remember a true friend
B. ask for help to find a friend’s parents
C. show her concern for a friend
D. tell her experience of fighting cancer
