【題目】Sitting at a desk in a classroom all day can be pretty boring.
The teachers at Ward Elementary in Winston –Salem,North Carolina ,picked up on that and traded in their students’desks for exercise bikes as a part of their Read and Ride program!
The Read and Ride program began five years ago.One classroom has enough bikes for every student in any given class, and throughout the day teachers bring in their students to the room to ride them and read their books.
Even regular classrooms have one bike in the back of each room for students who just can’t sit still to use to help them burn energy in a good way.
Students love being more active!Teachers enjoy seeing students eager to read.Parents appreciate stronger, smarter children.Headmasters value this effective and cost-free program.“Riding exercise bikes makes reading fun for many kids who get frustrated(挫敗的)when they read. Thus, they have a way to release that frustration while they ride,”said Scott Ertl, who started the program.“As we can see, everyone wants to promote literacy and lose weight! But many students who are overweight struggle with sports and activities since they don’t want to always be the last or lose with others watching on the playground. On exercise bikes, however, students are able to exert(發(fā)揮)themselves at their own level—without anyone noticing when they slow down or take a break.”
As it turns out,not only are the bikes helping the students burn calories, they’re also helping them learn better and stay focused. At the end of the school year the school analyzed testing data and found that students that spent more time reading and riding did more than twice as well on reading tests than their fellow students who spent the least time in the program.

【題目】The virus “Ebola” is named after the Ebola River in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. That’s where the virus was discovered in 1976. A person can only get Ebola through direct contact with an infected person’s bodily fluids, for example, sweat or spit. Additionally, the virus can get into your body through your eyes and mouth if those areas come into contact with something that contains the bodily fluids of an infected person. That’s why health care workers are supposed to keep themselves completely covered while treating patients.
The deadliest Ebola outbreak is spreading fast in Western Africa, taking over 900 lives so far. The health systems in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia are severely lacking in resources, and health care workers may not have access to adequate protective clothing when working in rural clinics, where the proper protections are lacking. Since Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia share a border; it’s easier for people to move from one country to another, increasing the risk for disease spread.
For now, all doctors can do is treat the symptoms and provide supportive care like monitoring heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing while making sure the patients’ fluids are supplied. Sometimes patients are given antibiotics(抗生素) to treat other possible infections. The hope is to make the patient pull through the infection so their immune system can eventually clear the virus. The people who survive Ebola have created enough antibodies to kill it.
There are several promising drugs and vaccines in development, but since Ebola is less common—and research about it is not well funded — there is no drug or vaccine that has been approved for use in humans. Many of the other drugs and vaccines have not yet been tested in humans. The WHO (World Health Organization) is meeting next week to discuss whether experimental treatments should be used during this outbreak.
【1】According to the passage, Ebola only spreads through _________.
A. patients’ sweat B. bodily fluids
C. people’s spit D. your body
【2】Which is the possible reason why Ebola spreads in West Africa quickly?
A. The Ebola river is polluted by the virus.
B. There aren’t any protections.
C. The protective clothing is adequate.
D. Three western countries share a border.
【3】Why have there been no cures used for Ebola in humans so far?
A. There are not enough drugs for the infected people.
B. Ebola is rare and its research money is lacking.
C. The people have enough antibodies to kill Ebola.
D. The WHO has decided not to use them.
【4】Which of the following can be the best title?
A. The Prevention from Ebola.
B. No Cure for the Virus “Ebola”.
C. The Deadliest Ebola in Africa.
D. Introduction to the Virus “Ebola”.

【題目】Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that men and animals possess, if they are properly used. If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play with it until their hands were burnt away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear didn’t, a child would burn himself or herself again and again, because fear would not warn himself or herself to keep away from the fire that had burnt himself or herself before. A really fearless soldier—and some do exist, is not a good soldier because he is soon killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which men and animals might soon die out.
In our first sentence we suggested that fear should be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. Even in your house you are not absolutely safe: an aeroplane may crash on your house, or ants may eat away some of the beams in your roof so that the latter falls on you, or you may get cancer!
The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but instead to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.
In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you. Fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is well.
In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger. For example, you can’t prevent an aeroplane crashing onto your house. In this case, fear has given you its warning; you have examined it and decided on your course of action, so fear of this particular danger is no longer of any use to you, and you have to try to overcome it.
【1】Children would play with fire until their hands were burnt away if _________.
A.they were given no warning beforehand
B.they had never burnt themselves
C.they had no sense of pain
D.they were fearful of the fire
【2】A really fearless soldier _____________.
A.is of great use to the army
B.is not a real soldier
C.is nothing but a dead soldier
D.easily gets killed in a battle
【3】People sometimes succeed in timely avoiding the danger because _________.
A.they have gained experience
B.they jump out of the way in time
C.they are calm in the face of danger
D.they are warned of the danger by fear and take quick action
【4】What's the writer's suggestion when the danger can't be avoided?
A.You have to try to overcome it.
B.Fear can really help you to run away.
C.Fear always helps you stay safe.
D.Fear is of great use to you.
